Good lord I never knew such a thread existed original.gif My screen name is jerseyredeye (I dont smoke weed) but some of you who may frequent outdoors forums would know me as jerseycat9 which stand for jersey catfisherman. Born and raised in Jersey but lived in many different locations in the USA I now reside in the Great state of Georgia and still fish 3 to 5 times a week depending on work and weather. Here are some pictures from this year there are a good many more but these are what I have on my laptop and nothing to big cause Im still figuring out the fishing here in GA. original.gif And dont mind the beer cans I dont drink and fish they are used as strike indicators and its funny you can always find beer cans while fishing LOL Some pics are goofy so dont hold them against me lol

Hey all, well my dad and I finally made it back up north this past weekend. I packed all night, and we left the house around 3:30 AM. We got to our first spot, the PM river round Gleason's landing about 45 minutes before sunrise. We doned on our waders and equiped our vests, and were ready to hook into some nice fish.

linked-image

We got to our hole, and started fishing. We didn't hook anything for a while, and didn't see very many salmon.

linked-image

Around 11, right after a pod of 3 fish moved in, I hooked into my first salmon of the day. Lost it after a minute, but BOY did it get the adrenaline pumping! I hooked it on a chartreuse half-half streamer. However, the next couple hours didn't go so well, hooking into 4 more fish and losing two to landing net errors. We lfet to eat lunch around 1:30, and then made the hard decision to go more north and try the Betsie/Platte rivers, which we never fished before.

linked-image
31 North to Benzonia

linked-image
Hodepyl Pond

We reached Benzonia around 4:30, and checked out a spot on the Betsie. It sure was crowded, but we saw a ton of fresh fish in the holes. We decided we would hit this area hard Sunday, and get there before the crowds arive. We drove to the mouth of the Betsie where it empties into Betsie Lake and tried there for some time. The fish were jumping everywhere, and there were only 6 people fishing, including my dad and me! The first two hours were hot, hooking into 6 fish with Little Cleos and landing two of them. I tailed another fish, but it slipped out of my grasp and the line snapped!
The big male:
linked-image

A spawned out female:
linked-image

Both of these fish were promptly released. After that, they action slowed down considerably and we left to eat dinner and check in a motel.

We woke the next morn at 5, and hit the Betsie river about 30 minutes before sunrise.
linked-image
linked-image
linked-image
I hooked into two salmon, which both shook the hook before light. We fished a hole chocked full of fresh salmon for the rest of the day, hooking into about 20 between me and my dad in 13 hours. I enjoyed the worst landing sucess I have ever had salmon fish this weekend, but it was a BLAST. The fish were fresh and everywhere. There were no less than 20 fish in the hole at a give time. I hooked into man fish, ranging from a monster in the 25+ range to small jacks. I lost many to wood, and a couple to landing net errors yet again, but did manage to land this feisty big female. Sorry about the stringer, but she was destined for the smoker and would not stay still!
linked-image

We left the Betsie around 7 PM. We quickly checked out the Platte before heading home. We saw some decent pods of kings there, but no cohos. We didn't make it out to Loon Lake, so we didn't get to see the monstrous schools of cohos. My dad and I were sure glad we took the risk coming up to the Betsie. We had a great time together, and will sure come back next year!
Great fish pics Frogfish thumbsup.gif ,Wish I could fish for Salmon or cohos,But since I live here in Texas I can only fish for Bass,Crappie and Smallmouth and sometimes Catfish. wink2.gif

Thanks for the kind words, the ghost and Harks! If you ever make it up this way during fall, give me a shout and I'll put you on some salmon.

I'll be leaving for FL in 1.5 weeks. I'll be spending two weeks there, the first in Ormond Beach (just north of Daytona), and the second in Pompano Beach (just north of Ft. Lauderdale). I plan to do plenty of fishing everyday, some surfishing for pompanos and blues, pier fishing for cobia, macks, and grouper, and some ICW and spillway fshing for snook, bass, peacocks, and maybe tarpon. I'll head down to the keys for a day, to do some bridge fishing for snook, big tarpon, grouper, and cobia. I'm also going out on a boat with a personal friend and Captain, Scott Hamilton, flyfishing for spinner sharks, macks, ladyfish, jacks, barracudas, and hopefully sailfish (our main target).

I can't wait! grin2.gif I'll post reports as soon as I start fishing there original.gif

New years eve Caught 3 stripers a spotted bass and a couple perch. The lake was super foggy in the morning but all in all it was a beautifull day. Marked tons of big stripers stacked up all over the place but very few that were hungry. Lost a lot of fish in the standing trees under the lake cause of the drought conditions

My dad and I took a half day trip (4 hrs) with Capt. Scott Hamilton of Hamilton Fly Fishing Charters (West Palm Beach, FL) on the 31st. Man, I wished we booked the full day... grin2.gif

The unusually warm weather here shut down the sailfish bite, so we chased other species...

We started out the day chasing some big schools of spanish macks. Man, were those a BLAST on the fly. They just nailed the fly when it was rapidly stripped or twitched. Caught about 30-40, and kept 9 for the table and a couple for shark bait. There were some nice pompano mixed in, but we couldn't nail any. I also think I saw a cobia cruising through the school...a nice one at that too!

Mr. Mack will be joining us for dinner...original.gif

They just destroyed those clouser minnow patterns we were throwing.

linked-image

Well, we were in for a surprise. I hooked a teeny mack that must of gone 10", and then suddenly this HUGE cuda comes out of nowhere and nails him. Bam, he swallows the mack on the second try, and I feed him line. After a couple seconds, Capt. Hamilton tells me to nail him and he's on!
He takes me into my backing on his first run, about 100 yds of line gone in a matter of seconds. He stays out there for a while, then slowly heads toward the beach. Suddenly, he turns on the jets again and about 150 yds out towards the beach, we see him jump with a spinner shark on his tail! Damn, first the mack was nailed by the cuda, now a spinner is chasing it!
He somehow manages to shake off the spinner, and I bring him in back into the fly line. Now he starts heading out towards deeper water. After some serious palm pressure, I turn him back towards the boat and there is a 5' cuda following it! Well, that cuda dissapears, and finally, we land the beast. A 19 minute fight on a 7wt Albright rod. He was about 4'.

linked-image

We catch some more macks, and then are shcked to see we only have an hour left. We decided we didn't have enough time for spinner sharks, and we would not be guarenteed one, so we head back to the ICW for some big jacks.
It took us a while to find them, and then a while to get the to hit. There were some big hammerheads that were spooking the jacks. Finally, we got into some fish. I caught two 8 lbers, while my dad caught one. These fish were intense! Some of the hardest fighting fish out there, especally on the fly. stripsetting these fish were HARD!

linked-image

Well, after some arm-busting on the jacks, it was time to head home. What a great time on the water, and I'm sure it won't be the last. Thanks Capt. Hamilton. He's a great captain and guide, and is very experienced and friendly. If flyfishing is your thing, give him a call for some EXTREME flyfishing.

I can't wait to do it again...next time, spinner sharks!

Come on Froggy that’s not a Mackerel, I caught a mackerel well at least half a Mackerel. Sorry but a few of my friends catch them at 20 to 30 Kg, but you have got a good hoard at least. Oh and the jacks you have caught are great too mate, but we call them Trevally.cool.gif

Anyway this is a little Mackrel I have caught ages ago, you have seen it before I think..

And this a Trevallie too, they are small but you can see the simarlarities.

Not fair Harks, you get to play with the kingfish (king mackerel, not that Aussie kingfish)! tongue.gif Oh, I'll post something as soon as I upload it. I bet you'll like it original.gif

Nice trev there! Trevally, jacks, close enough. They're related, but not exactly the same fish. What I really would like to hook into is one of those giant trevs. You get any around there?

EDIT: Now THESE are king mackerel. Caught by Rick and Tom, and photographed as we headed back to port.

I fish salt water, best catch yet, that would have to be a blacktip that i caught about 55miles east of pt. mansfeild, 20lbs under the state record. had a larger one to but unfortunately we were out of 000-buckshot . ive caught some big sow trout and oversized reds to.. and a 55lb black drum, 5ft kingfish weighing about 40lbs, 13lb red snapper, hooked some big jacks, jumped a 7ft tarpon... i need to get a life lol . ill dig up some of my fish pics and post them.

Christ frogfish.. thats a big cuda for a 7wt, i about had a 5ft tarpon on my 9wt but i lost it to the rocks sad.gif havent even caught a glimple of a tarpon rolling since then.

nosaM
You havent experienced hardcore fishing until youve damn near pissed youself in 5ft rollers offshore in a 14ft center console while trollin at 12mph for kings yes.gif

yeah... im insane devil.gif
frogfish
Yeah, I did some poor fighting with that Cuda though. I should of got him in faster as he was almost shark bait. But he swam away strong.

A 9wt is seriously undergunned for Tarpon. Go with a 10 or 11wt. TFO TiCrX, Sage Xi2, Beulah Bluewater, and GLoomis Crosscurrent 11wt are great tarpon rods. They cast a mile too. I've hit 110ft with on the 11wt Crosscurrent with no double haul. Also, you can always go with a custom. FLO, Billy Baroo, Burkenheimer...all good blanks to build a custom tarpon rod on.

Unless you're in a boat, a 9wt won't be able to muscle the fish in. I do a lot of surf fishing for tarpon, and a 9 wt could tire the fish past the point of revival. Some say a 10wt is too light for surf fishing, but I can power in the tarpon with my FLO 10wt.

I envy you though. I love saltwater fishing. It's hard to reconcile my two passions though...trout or the tarpon.

Went out yesterday for some walleye on the fly on the Huron River. Sadly, because of the rain, they weren't here in force like they were earlier in the week. Landed one 14" 'eye, and lost another 'eye that was 8+ lbs at my feet. We were swinging stonefly imitations. My friend had a huge fish that broke him off. We suspect musky.

However, it was sucker city, so we switched to spinning gear and had fun with the suckers. Caught about 20 in 2 hrs, averaging about 6 lbs.

Took a first timer out today to fish for MI prespawn bass. I had him deadsticking senkos while I nymphed some Czech nymphs along the bottom with my 4wt. I got some small crappies not worthy of a picture.

The deadsticking paid off though, and he caughtnhis first fish ever, a chunky 14" LM. Sorry for the low quality pic, it was my camera phone.

He should be proud. Prespawn bass in 39 degrees=slow fishing.

tcgram, where in Ohio do you live? If your son is old enough to wade, you should take him to the Maumee River in Toledo. It's STACKED full of walleye. Most people can limit out in a hour or so.
Rock Slinger
One of my best, and certainly my luckiest days of fishing went like this:

I was about 20 years old and had been fishing my whole life to that point and never had such a day. I brought my little 7 year old cousin out in the canoe, and after catching a bunch of nice bass I hooked and landed a 6.85 LB largemouth, the largest I had ever caught. Took a good five minutes to get it in and it pulled the canoe around a bit, jumped 4 or 5 times, etc... very exciting. My little cousin was beyond thrilled as was I. We paddled back and I put the fish in a giant clear industrial bag filled with plenty of water. The fish looked like a ten punder in the bag, LOL! We drove down to the local baitstore and had it weighed in. 6.85 Lbs, I figure he burned up .15 lbs fighting to stay uncaught, LOL.

Anyway, after returning and releasing the fish, I went back out and on my first cast I landed an approxiamately 6LB Smallmouth! This was especially unusual as I had fished this particular lake regularly my entire life and this was the first smallmouth I had ever caught.

So I caught my biggest largemouth and my first smallmouth, a giant, two casts in a row.. I did not weigh in the smallmouth, not realizing it was considered 'trophy' size by some people for this area. It gave an even better fight than the larger largemouth, jumped 3-4 feet out of the water!. Wish I had a camera with me that day... Dang.

Yeah Lilly, those if i'm not mistaken are pure-bred Aussie Blue/Red Healers (Aussie Cattle Dog) (ACD) (I owned a few Blue Healer myself over the years) Awesome loyal & intelligent & hard working dogs. They were first specifically bred for the harsh Aussie climate around the late 1800s (you can see the Aussie Dingo (red) X Bull Terrier (black white etc) & X Dalmatian (blue) in em. Top of the line breed I've seen em fetch up to $1200 per pup at shows (depending on bloodline tho) coming outta of Queensland where most of the best lines in Australia come from.

Lilly
My two are Australian Shepherd collies (also very tough herding dogs). They have very cool eye colors (green, blue, gold). My black and white male has one green eye and one brown eye (my red female has gold eyes).

tcgram, just look for a place not too crowded. Some guys can be jerks.

Put fish a yellow, pink, or chartreuese 1/8 oz jighead with a 3" curlytail grub (preferably dark body and vibrant tail...Mister Twister). Put a couple small splitshot about 4' above the jig head. Cast and let it drift and make sure you're bouncing of the bottom. You'll feel a tap...tap...tap... from the bottom. When your line stops drifting, or get a series of sharp taps, set the hook!

Also be sure to follow the regulations and limits...the COs are ruthless there.

Ciraxis sure can nail those trout, eh? On the fly nonetheless...

Hey buddy, what were you using? Looks like you were going with bead-headed nymphs? Any hatches going on in the area right now?

We're having some duns appearing, with the usual stones. The one hatch I'm waiting for is the hex in June! However, the browns and 'bows always will fall for a nice meaty streamer. Man, muddler minnows and madonnas/coneheads are killer!

Yes...I actually went fishing. Shocking, isn't it?

Well, I decided I could not survive the lack of fishing any longer, so I hit a hidden stream off the Huron that planters from Stockerfest happen to find their way into every year. Yes, it's not real wild flyfishing, but it's the closest thing to it in SE MI. Sadly, I don't have them freedom and time to hit rivers like the PM or the Au Sable during the school year.

Back to the report...I was going solo, as my friend couldn't make it (sick as a dog). I reached the stream, and trekked a little while through the woods to hit one of my favorite runs. I got down there, and I could see trout rising to what appeared to be hendricksons. I tied on a classic Parachute Adams. I cast a little upstream of one of the rises, and mend. Nothing. I repeat the process, and on the 3rd cast, a 'bow rises and takes. Man, there is no better feeling that fishing dries for trout, and hooking up. A couple jumps later, the fish slides into my hand. A nice 14" bow. My first trout of the season. I climb onto shore and snap a picture.

linked-image

The fish powers away when I place her gently back into the water. Relief rushes over me. It's good to be back. A couple casts later, I hook up again. A nice 16" rainbow. I climb up again to snap a picture.

linked-image

I proceed downstream a little, and land 4 more 'bows. I switch over to a Royal Wulff, and get a big brown to take. The monster was at least 19". However, he got me wrapped on a log and popped off. It doesn't matter though, as that fight was too fun. I retie, and land a couple more small 'bows.

I move to a spot downstream where I don't have room to cast. I switch over to my *gasp* spinning rod, and tie on a size 0 Mepps spinner. Here was the result:

linked-image

I land one more fish, before I decide it's time to go home. It was a beautiful day, and it felt great to be back on the water. Now time to plan for the AuSable in June.
