Very interestng, indeed. I live in the Pacific Northwest-a hot-spot for satanic activity and such, and over the years I have learned not to scoff at stories like this. Can anyone locate pictures or such and post them? I would like to see more of this place.

Sounds to me likeit might be some kind of meth lab or something. Once someone finds it on google or something I'd like to see it but, I wouldn't want to go knock on the front door and get shot at over it.

ok well we took a drive by during the day, circled hte area for alittle bit, all we encountered were some friendly neighbors who said that all this is a rumor, kids who find out about this place chase ppl who are clueless, its all for the thrill. the whole area is weird so nothign really stands out, and theres no door to knock on to begin with, no guard house and no fleet of trucks. we encountered about half dozen ppl in the area. all very normal and all very polite, maybe there just annoyed about ppl trustpassing on their land.......

i dont think it is a meth lab. it has toooo much attention to be anything of the sort. i do wonder why the new resident bought the place to begin with. from what i understand now, the old man that lives there has only been living there for 6 or so years. the woman that lived there before died, she was like 96.i wouldnt buy a house with all the hype that surronds it. would u? that does seem odd!!!!! i went there a couple days ago but didnt go back to the house, dont really like tresspassing at a place that "could" have guards, in the next week or so im going back and im taking pics, which i will email to any one who wants to see, probably will take my video cam as well. one thing i didnt mention before is when i was there during the day, there was ALOT of traffic on the road, alot, it was young and old people, noone seemed to be scared or none of the people seemed to be guards, there was even a woman walking a dog!! not very creepy in day light and to the locals!lol also after reading several boards like this i read about many different guards vehicles, most common being red trucks, also i have read about a white bronco many times (maybe o.j.?lol) , even read about a black bronco. so who knows red is the moost common tho. people probably sit back there just waiting to screw wit people. until next time............hope fully ill have real pics soon..boofy

if that place was a meth lab, you would know. meth labs create an awful odor that is detectable for quite a distance. thats why alot of rednecks make it out in the sticks.

Hey, I'd move there if it came with the guarentee of living to 96!!!

also because of the fact that people go there trespassing on a regular basis, no one in there right mind would have a meth lab there. they would have to be a complete moron.

i live down the street from cossart rd. most of my friends call it the "devils backbone" and call the house the devil church. i havent heard of any red pickups until now, from what i've been told there's a white van which drives up and down the road at night with its lights off. a friend of mine is a member of the family which owns alot of the land around there, and another friend lives on the woods near the road and ive been around them alot, although i hadn't heard about the house until school started this year. i've also heard that the white van is the friend of mine and his cousin. as far as it being related to the duponts, i didnt know that it was a dupont manor although it wouldnt surprise me in the least as they love that kind of place (secluded, woodsy) and yes, they are famously fond of inbreeding. most of what ive heard has to do with the satanic side of the story, that the place is the hangout of satan-worshippers. odd that ive probably been down the road a dozen times but not knowing the story i never noticed anything.

Can't help you dude, just know what I read on the web.
Don't live there, never been there, so wouldn't know.
But it seems others on this thread know where it is and have driven by it, so maybe you'd better ask them.
Only know it's on or nearby Cossart road or Cosart Road.

I have question for anyone living in the area have checked for strings of unexplained murder disappearance of teenagers I was just thinking that if this place is used by satanist and there hounded by teens as much as these stories make it seem some of must have not made it out. I was just thinking this might be away to verify some of this stuff.

WOW!

that was the greatest story i have ever heard. That is THE best story to scare the s--- out of your firend while camping,

but i think it could be true, somthing is happening no one wants to know about.

I live around the area. From reading the second storie on like the 2nd or 3rd page, its the big mansion on the top fo the hill right after you cross over the covered bridge. I was there down in the valley looking for it tonight. We didnt have any luck, but then again we have no idea how to find it.

As for the people that live there, supposedly, there are KKK members that live there. Thats what ive heard at least
allister mcbolleywhop
jesus brohams this place is not hard to find especially considering you have google maps. i dont want to give it away because i dont want it to get too crowded but reexamine rt 52 around the delaware border

there is no covered bridge or whatever and ramsey road and hockessin are nowhere near it, and yes it does have a sign on 52 but the sign is in an odd place
Creepy_Steve
Anybody been ther?
NirmalaMaya
Well,
There are trucks that "chase" people away because the township where the house is located has employed guards to deter people from going around that area because at one point, 200 cars were driving up and down that road a night.
Apparently theyve had the township made private, thats why its hard to find the road on any maps....

Streets & Legends
The notoriety surrounding the Skull Tree and the Cult House have forced the township to close down the road to the general public. The Review receives special permission to take a look around.

New Mexico has Roswell.

New York has Amityville.

Texas has Ross Perot.

Every state can claim some sort of incredible oddity.

But the Small Wonder tops them all.

Delaware has a terrifying legend that has been whispered about for years — the Cult House.

In a secluded wooded area on the Delaware/Pennsylvania border, there's a mansion at the top of a hill. Rumors of cult activity have made this house a legend.

For years, caravans of thrill-seeking teen-agers have made a pilgrimage to see the house.

The narrow, winding lane that leads to the house has earned the nickname Devil's Road. Its main stretch runs approximately two miles with no intersections. This road shares the infamy of the Cult House because of its twisted sideshow of seemingly supernatural phenomena.

At the mouth of Devil's Road, drivers are met by a large "Road Closed" sign, which was posted by the township about a year ago to keep out non-residents. After numerous disturbances along the road, residents had complained to the police, so drivers now need a township permit to drive along the road - or they risk a fine of up to $1,000.

The Review was granted special access to Devil's Road by the township to investigate and document the validity of the rumors surrounding the road and the Cult House.

* * *

The first and most unmistakable detail about Devil's Road is the trees.

The street winds around a long bend with a forest on its left and farmland on its right. Tall, slender trees line both sides of the road.

In complete eerie accordance with the rumors concerning the road, the trees actually lean away from the Cult House.

Not just the branches, but the entire trunks of the trees slant at a distinctive angle, and the angle becomes increasingly wider as the road goes on.

The road soon leads to a notorious tree with bulging, exposed roots.

This is the Skull Tree.

When viewed from the front, the roots look astonishingly like a human skull. When viewed from the side, they look like a large hand with its fingers reaching into the ground.

The tree bears a spray-painted swastika and other hate messages and symbols.

Further down the road, drivers can catch a glimpse of the ill-famed Cult House.

The massive stone manor is situated on a sloping, snow-covered hill about two football fields away from the road. It is almost completely hidden by thick evergreens, planted by the owner to deflect attention.

It's rumored that the windows of the mansion are shaped like crosses.

H.G. Haskell, a class of '84 university alumnus who has lived along the road all his life, says the majority of rumors regarding the Cult House and Devil's Road are just that - rumors.

He says he first heard about the spooky tales nearly 15 years ago, and they have escalated ever since.

"Four or five years ago, it started to get more serious," Haskell says. "That's when the graffiti on the trees started."

He says before the "Road Closed" barrier was erected, nearly 200 vehicles a night would drive down Devil's Road.

Haskell and the other residents decided to hire a security guard to patrol the road, which could account for the rumors of security trucks chasing drivers.

"One time, [the guard] found people in KKK hoods," he says, but Haskell says he thinks it was probably a fraternity prank.

Haskell adds that cars from the surrounding properties were stolen and set on fire and that a burning cross was found at one end of the road.

In addition, decapitated baby dolls have been found nestled in the hollow of the Skull Tree.

These incidents were what led the residents to ask the township for assistance. Though the amount of traffic radically decreased after the sign was put up, Haskell says he's still wary about the safety of himself and the other residents.

"I still won't let my children ride their bikes on that road," he says.

Haskell says the rumors about the Cult House and Devil's Road can all be easily debunked.

The trees lining the road grow at an angle, he explains, because they have been trimmed to avoid the power lines that run along the road.

Although he confirms the Cult House does indeed have windows with crosses, he says that it is a fairly common occurrence in many windowpanes.

And above all, he says, there is nothing mysterious about the owner.

"The owner used to be a little old lady. She lived by herself in a wing of the house. She was a du Pont," he says. "She died about four or five years ago."

The current owner, he says, is an elderly gentleman whom he and the other residents have all met.

"There is no cult," he says.

For now, the road will remain indefinitely closed to non-residents, according to township officials.

The township police regularly patrol the road, and several violators have already been issued tickets.

But the legend still thrives, Haskell says, and the "Road Closed" signs are thrown into a nearby creek at least twice a week by trespassers.

Although Haskell says the mysteries and rumors about the Cult House and Devil's Road are just fabricated by locals for a weekend thrill, several creepy questions still remain.

Why hasn't the owner of the house tried to dispel the gossip that has inspired the hubbub?

What incidents inspired the rumors of cult activity?

And what about those tall, shadowy, slanting trees . . . the ones that are nowhere near the power lines?

Scoop
I have grown up in the area I live about 2 mins from Cossart Rd. Im 22 years old and I didnt even know about the so called legend until 5 years when my cousin from a few towns over told me of it. I have driven, riden my bike walked etc etc down that road numerous times before that. The road is scary looking i will agree but harmless. Almost every story i read or hear seems to be a lil different. (Mostly about the exact location or where the houses are located etc) The whole chasing people off the road thing is great. Its one of the biggest pranks around here. A lot of out of town teenagers cruise that road at night for the thrill. I know some local kids/adults have been prankisters and have chased people off it as well as the "Supposed security" im sure. I myself have happed to freak out a car or 2 while cutting down the road on my way home late at night. Me and a few friends have walked that road at night numerous times to see it what anyone says is true. PS Nothing ever happened strange

The township did close the road a few years back but it now opened again

For those who dont know the M. Night shamalon movie called the Village was filmed off of Cossart Road in 2003-2004.

Heres is a some more information that might have something to do with the real reason why this road became so popular. A criminal gang in the late 70's murdered and burried 3 teens in the woods there. I havent confirmed that this was the exact property but a few interent sites have and it seems like the logical place. I dunno how the story grew to what it is today but whatever

Here are links about the murders ETC

Hey its also on the first page of the werid pa book but they really dont give any investigation reasons why its been named Devils road
Scoop
Ill add this about the houses thing

There are 2 houses that are commonly miked up in this story

#1 a normal size house along cossart road ( original devil house)

#2 a Older Dupont mansion 5 mins away and 2 turns from Cossart road across feilds on a big hill in the distance more closer to the covered bridge along smith bridge road in Delaware

Most out of towners making the pilgrimage to Cossart see this place and think its part of the Cossart legend but its not Its on the way there but not the "Real House"

PS
Its Cossart rd not Cossart Manor Rd which is relativly close by
Scoop
PS PS The Tree that looks like a Skull is real

In spring 04 or so the township cut down/ cut back some of the famous leaning trees. The reason the trees where leaning outward was because they are on a hill and the sun is bloacked by more trees above them to one side of the road. The other way is a field and gets more direct/ constant daytime sunlight. So trees naturally grow towards the light. Thus the trees leaning away from the road towards the side where they get the most sun. But I will say it does look a lil scary

yes, i have seen that truck too. They had a weird blue light on the inside. I couldn't quite make out what kind of truck it was, but they did have this distinctive flashing light on the top. Not a cop light but a orange one. At one point they turned the lights off and were still following us, i was scared as crap. But as we neared rt 1, the car just disapeared. I really think somthing is going on there.

I have just recently visited the cult house for the first time, because of how interestingly it was portrayed in the book Weird PA. My experiences were limited, but I will portray them here best as I can for the enlightenment of the subject.

Devil's Road, or Cossart Road, is not very hard to find. Just pick up a Pennsylvania Gazatteer, look for it just north of the Delaware border of Pennsylvania around Pennsbury and Chadd's Ford, and the road is clearly marked. There's no conspiracy or coverup to remove it off of the maps. The book lists Cossart road's sign being removed for privacy reasons, but a road sign does still exist off of route 100. It's plain as day.

When you enter Cossart Road from the Rt. 100 side, it doesn't appear to be anything special. Noted, the first time my friends and I went was in daytime, and we went up the road 5 or 6 times without ANY trouble. But anyhow, the beginning of the road is quite populated and just like any other rural area: quaint houses, SUVs, and christmas decorations (I went just yesterday).

As you get to the first of two stop signs, you being to understand why M. Night Shyamalan decided to film The Village there. The trees are all quite misshapen and almost inherently evil in nature, although you'll find this phenomenon in various other places in the rural countrside surrounding Pennsbury and Chadd's Ford. Granted, some of the trees were cut due to power lines, but many grow no where near any power lines at all. To your left and right are huge, rolling fields, dotted with antiquarian farm houses pulled straight from the 18th century. The trees lining the road are not so dense here, but notable. It appears as if you have just stepped back in time, especially when you venture past the first stop sign. Also at this first intersection is a road that bisects Cossart, where I believe the real cult house might lie. I ventured off to the left on one pass, but I found nothing back more old farm houses and horse pastures. I'm very puzzled to the ACTUAL location of the cult house, what with its high visibility and sharp, iron gates that I didn't see at all.

The road continues to gradually get more creepy as you continue to the second stop sign, where a road continues to the left, and the most famous stretch of the road lies straight ahead. This is where the trees start to dramatically bend off away from the road, following the old legends. Some are easily explained by power lines... others, however, are not:
user posted image

In the direction I was coming at first, I could not see the "skull tree." I then, mistakingly, I might add, thought it didn't really exist, or if it did, it was off in the "private property: no trespassing" sign-dotted woods. Around the bend, close to road signs where spray paint is the favorite form of art, lies my suspect for the cult house. It is the only house on the street with a driveway that is blocked off by an iron gate. The gate is not ornate, or spiky, or black, like most accounts say, which leads me to suspect some other house is in question. However, the house itself did have strange crow-like protusions on the roof (snow melters, maybe???) Behind this house, up on the hill and surrounded my large evergreens, is an imposing stone mansion that I saw upon turning my head to look back at the "cult house." This, I suspect, is what is commonly known as the cult house on Cossart. It is about a 1/4 of a mile from the route 52 intersection, unless I have route 100 and 52 mixed up (which is very much possible--please correct me if I'm wrong!)

Upon turning around on 52 and coming back down Cossart the other way, the skull tree is very observable. It's about 3/5 of a mile in, on the right if you're coming from 52 on an embankment right by the cult house. It very much looks like the top half of a skull, and has been cemented in to prevent mischeif as of late:

user posted image

Graffiti covers it.

Strange things did happen on the road. A woman in a red car, notice RED, saw me and my friends slowing down near the cult house. She stopped, pulled over as if looking at directions, and let us pass. As soon as I passed her, she followed me. She stopped when I stopped, slowed when I did (not very close to my bumper, though, she was a good ways back but just in sight) and pretty much mimicked my motions until I got to the 2nd stop sign. Then she either pulled over or turned, because I really can't recall what happened to her.

Also, many "trash collecting" pickups traversed Cossart at this time of day (approximately 2pm on a Wednesday--don't know the local pickup times, please enlighten me if you know) and seemed to be following me as well. These could very well be disguised guards or police patrols, which makes sense. I saw the same one probably 3 times going different directions.

None of this is very peculiar, other than the odd feeling that the residents really don't want you on this road at all. It is not anymore illegal to ride on this road, you just can't stop and be seen by the police. Many "No stopping of standing, anytime" signs are liberally posted throughout Cossart Rd. and the fine-wary should heed them as such. I did, however, stop to photograph the skull tree. It's not so much scary as cool to look at. It's one of nature's old tricks in splendid form.

The road was very well trafficked by joggers and bicylcists, though. The road is not so terrible, then, to totally keep the locals off of it.

By night, though, not a single soul was seen on the road, save one. As I was making a pass of the cult house for the first time, coming from 100 to 52, I didn't notice anything "amiss" at the house I marked as the suspected cult house. The road was very much more eerie at night, and gives off the unmistakeable feeling of dread. The trees seem to hide unspeakable things, and you really feel as if the monsters from The Village will pop out at you at any moment. A real life deer did pop out at one point, scaring the bejesus out of eveyrone, but that was more humorous than anything in retrospect.

The one car I did note on the road that night was an SUV. It came straight towards me at a tremendous speed for the narrow road that Cossart is (should be one way!!) and did not heed me at all as I swerved off the road and honked. It seemed to have a singular mission, it was speeding off towards the cult house.

That is the sum of my experiences at the place. I would very much like to go back some day, for based on what I read on this thread, I actually didn't find the cult house at all. I only live about 2 hours away, and it was a nice road trip. I also visited the Downingtown twin tunnels, but that's another story altogether!
Lord Umbarger
She probably just wanted to make sure that you weren't planning on spray painting her favorite tree!

Cool pictures though.

Yeah, I could understand why she would be doing that totally. If I lived there, I wouldn't want any more grafitti on the signs there. The countryside really is beautiful and there's a lot to be said for the privacy of the place. I'm sure the residents wished they could have kept it that way!

yea well the countyside is beutiful and all but this place is just errie, i went back to the house tonite with a couple diff. firends who didnt believe that we got chased and i saw the truck again, we were hesitant to go up and take a better look, i didnt make out the type but it had a light on the roof, like a police car or a firefighter would have, it was parked behing a fence and i believe it was unoccupied when we saw it but the windows were too dark to see, either covered by something or just limo tinted. could their be official security now. im really intrested to see if anyone else has seen this.

Sorry to step on toes if someone has already posted this information. I tried Ramsey Road Wilmington Delaware on Google Earth, when it zooms in look up and to the right of the square. There seems to be a house or some sort of structure in a clearing.

Hi, first post, but I couldn't resist searching for this thing on google earth. Try to find co-ordinates 39*50'58.71" N and 75*37'00.11" W. I'm not sure how to put in the co-ordinates but this is my guess at where it is. Also, I believe the fields to the SSE between the house and the state line are where "The Village" was filmed.
BuyMeAPony
Have no clue how to post photos so ive posted a link to the screen shot.
Ive put in the co-ordinates and taken a screen shot of the house thats located there.

About a month ago me and some friends went to cossart at night. Saw the tree, and went up what we think is the driveway to the house. About halfway up there was a metal gate, and two of my friends went out with flashlights while I stayed inside. We turned the car off, and sat there waiting for them for about 10 minutes. It was EXTREMELY creepy and I was freaking out for them to get back. When they finally came back they said they said the driveway just kept going and before they were even near the house saw other flashlights in the distance and ran for it. This was a really risky and stupid move by us because if any security was around we would have gotten in a lot of serious trouble. We didnt see any other cars, but in the past we have seen a lot of security in the area.

Anouther friend of mine went about a week before I did and was actually stopped by a police car. He asked what they were doing on the road and told them that if they were caught on any property they would be arrested. Later on he said he saw the cops talking to "some red neck looking kids" in a red truck. Interesting stuff

i found out some history of this place. about 20 years ago, there was a gang called the johnson brothers. They stole farm stuff ect, but aparently one of them had a big mouth. Well they took two of them out in the field( not sure which one or where) and made them dig their own graves, they shot them. thats all ive heard about the johnson brothers, but im sure you can google it or somthing.

Well they took two of them out in the field( not sure which one or where) and made them dig their own graves, they shot them. thats all ive heard about the johnson brothers, but im sure you can google it or somthing.

Yeah, I actually found a news article from the time. Sorry, can't find the link. But it said they killed 3 teenagers and buried them all in one grave on top of eachother.

That is a link that buymeapony posted with the co-ordinates i found. If you've got google earth you could zoom out a little bit from that spot and see fields between that house and the state line to the SSE. That is where I think the bodies were found. It is also the spot where "The Village" was filmed. This whole area seems like it has something weird about it to me.

I used google earth and zoomed out. The original zoom in picture and zoomed out pic are both at the link below. The house is boxed in red in the zoom out picture for reference.

^ nice

i dont think the house you have boxed in is the right house. Ive heard things about a guard house and if you look near the top after the road splits, you can see a small building. But ive also heard that its off of cossart road, so not sure.

So wait.. Ramsey Road, in Delaware, or Cossart? I'm seeing both here.

I believe the coordinates that I did were for the state of Delaware. Im not familiar with US geography so this all means nothing to me. Just did the earth search for others to have a peek at it. Besides I have no clue what Cossart is wink2.gif tongue.gif
