Well, even if it isn't as people have claimed I would just go down there for a scare and a bit of fun.
FeugoFuego
Well, I happen to live in Delaware, and two friends and I were looking for some fun. Everyone that goes to highschool with me talks about "Devil's Road," some call it "Cult House Road." Same place. Anyway, we decided to go look for "devil's road," and my one friend mentioned the KKK. So, I assumed it was in Rising Sun, MD. Way wrong.

So by 2:30am on Monday (the 19th), we decided to call some of our friends. All of them said "right over the PA border off of 202." Well that's the area that Delawareans call "The Valley." It consists of about 25 stereotypical back roads - creepy, narrow, no street lights. All the stories we heard from people mentioned the trees that pointed away from the road. We saw this a few times, but also noticed power lines. It was far too dark to see everything though, so we missed the entrance to one road - later we found out it is "Devil's Road." So after driving around for about five hours, we stopped at a friends house to google. We found a google earth map and got the street area. 201 Cossart Road, Chadds Ford, PA. That's the closest listed street address.

Well we had to go check it out now, but it was daylight. We went anyway, but two of us stayed in the car while myself and the girl that made the proposition of looking for the road in the first place started walking up the road in the middle of the field with only one row of trees on each side - some creating an opposite cannopy effect. We were convinced this was the road:
linked-image

And we were wrong... that just lead us into the middle of a cut-down forrest. My phone had died at this point, so our friends in the car were freaking out because people were driving by them very slowly (like 5 mph) and glaring at them on Cossart. There were signs everywhere about NO TRESPASSING, VIOLATORS WILL BE FINED, which warranted our friends anxiety, I guess.

Anyway, we continued to wander, when we noticed a white house at the bottom of an open field. There were two silver trucks in the driveway. We went down the hill where the trees were, thinking that we were looking at the cult house. But we noticed no cross windows... and it was far from a mansion. We started walking down the small road which was covered in snow, noticing tire tracks all over it. The tracks were about the width of a car or truck, and they appeared to lead right to the house at the bottom of the open field. We continued to walk, noticing that the trees were pointing away from the road at a ridiculous angle, some looking almost as though they had just fallen - but they were clearly rooted in the ground. We noticed a clearing in the trees and saw a house at the top of the hill. This is it, the real Cult House:
linked-image

Crossed-shaped windows and all, but not inverted. We decided to go no closer and went back to the car... only to watch our friends drive away... I managed to get my phone to turn on, so I called them and they came back. We drove in the direction of the house on Cossart, hoping to show them. The only problem is that there is a large group of pine trees that conveniently block the house from the road.

So, if any of you want to google earth it, it will be located between Stockford Road and Cossart Road in Chadds Ford, PA.

Also, it wasn't that scary, but it was also daytime. If you want a scare, you'd have to go during the early morning for sure.

Also, a google map of above. You can clearly see the pine tree blockade in the middle of the field:

I'm just really surprised no one wrote the town council or historical society in the area for information about this place. Those are the folks that will typically have the accurate information. If there's a town or county historical society you can sometimes get some really cool stories out of the members who may have known people who lived there...

I know a little about this after researching for an article I was going to be writing about a relatively famous place in WA State--the creepy "13 Steps to Hell" cemetary or better known as the Maltby Cemetary (at one time it was on some top ten list of scariest places in America). The town historical society was SUPER helpful, they even put me in touch with the current owner of this small and very creepy private cemetary. The owner was a pretty gruff old dude, but he showed me around, then begged me not to write the article because of all the vandalism problems they'd had in the past. The current property owner was experiencing a "quiet" period and didn't want to remind a new generation of teeny-boppers in the area that the place still existed. I ended up focusing the article on another location entirely, because afterall, it was a private family cemetary and he didnt really deserve to have a bunch of new generation vandals show up. No wonder I'm not a writer anymore. haha--too much of a softy.

So far, the above pictures are the best. I'm not 100% sold on that being the "cult house" but right now it has all the makings to be it. I'm hoping to go check it out sometime this week and see if I can't get closer. Great find though guys!

Be very careful... the house is on the top of a relatively open hill, so anything that moves is probably very noticeable. Not that I actually believe someone will come out and shoot you, but they'll definately call the cops; people up in that area are real sticklers about stupid things like trespassing. Also, most of the ice and snow was still there, but with the recent weather change, it should be gone... maybe try some camoflauge at night?

Also, I never actually was on Devil's Road... according to everyone I've talk to about it. Devil's road (on the google map above) is actually the road running across the top, before it splits into the driveway of the actual house. I was on the opposite side of the house near the two ponds. And from the looks of the google map, the "front" of the house is covered by a bunch of trees...

Either way, we're definately going back really soon... camoflauge and all. But at night this time... that way its kind of scary.

Hey. Thanks for sharing the pictures. The snow is really pretty. <3

I can't believe this topic is still going strong.

You know, it might be worth contacting the historical society in the area BEFORE you go around trespassing and sneaking around in the dark which is just plain dangerous for you and it's really scary for the current owners. While your intentions might be good, they don't know that.

I say contact the Historical Society (or town council) because it's amazing how helpful those folks can be. Tell them you're writing an article for a school paper (or something) about the house and tell them you want to dispell all the rumors about the place. Dollars to donuts if they think you're truly interested and have good intentions, they will know how to arrange a meeting with the owners and perhaps a tour of the house and grounds itself... and if they can't.... they can at least give you all the history of the place before you start invading these poor folks privacy and scaring the heck out of them.

I dunno, just my two cents--I know it's fun to play covert operation, but it is really fair?
DelVal Paranormal
I have in fact contacted the historical society and they explained that there is no record of any sort of "cult" or strange activity in or around the area. I've also gone done, talked to a few people from the area and received an email from somebody who knows the people in the so called "cult house" and everything is false. Now, you can believe what you want to believe and that is fine, but from the sources we spoke too, I believe them. I will post some of the interviews and such in a post when I get all my information together and it will all be available on our website also(cheap plug).

Bravo!! Because I've had a little experience with this kind of thing, I just wanted to make really sure you exhausted all your avenues. It's really painful (or at least it was for me) to find out that all the sneaking around and tresspassing people were doing scared the living daylights out of perfectly innocent and normal owners of a notoriously creepy place.

Cool. And ya gotta love shameless plugs! original.gif

yeah i know what you mean.. After about 100 trips of sneaking around, driving around and whatever, we figured to try and get the legit story and once I read your post I was like geez why didn't we think of that. the only thing that disappoints me is that we can't interview the women who lives in the house now. We were told that she doesn't like to be bothered because any attention just brings more curious go getters and she likes to live peacefully without having to worry about kids and vandals and I have to completely respect that.

In reference to Cossart Road, I live in Delaware, about 5 miles from Cossart Road. Recently, 5 of my friends and I gathered into a Chevy Blazer and went to Cossart road. As we turned onto it, the driver turned his headlights on, and in the middle of the road walking towards the cult house was a woman she seemed to be 25 maybe 30, her body seemed normal.she was walking in the middle of the road holding ther arm at the inner elbow, dragging her right leg begind her. Shortly after we turned around and headed toward the intersection again to see her standing at the window of a black SUV.Lil We parked across from it. She walked up to our car. Stupidly, the driver opened the back window.Lil she walked up to the car and her face, she looked as if she was 70 or 80, clearly effected by meth. She said "Help me, Help me. Somebody left me here. Help me, help me. I want to go home. I need a ride." She had a hole the size of a pencil eraser in the inner elbow. Clearly scared by this whole thing, We sped away.
we followed this visit 4 days later by passing the cult house 6 times, trying to see if anyone would chase us. Nothing happened. The only thing we noticed was that the difference in the temperature. On 52 and Route 1, the temperature was 52 degrees farenheight. As soon as we turned onto Cossart road all 6 times, it almost instantaneously dropped to 36 degrees

the fact that this urban legend is still around is crazy. i remember my sister telling me about this place when she was like 17 and shes 28 now. ive only been on this road twice, during the day and at night. i didnt even mean to go on the road at night but i ended up on it somehow. ive never been chased off the road. i really want to know if the whole satanic church thing is legit. if it is i want to know where its located so i can see it and dance with the devil aha. but forreal, if i ever find out where it is im going up with a gun on my waist because its posted everywhere that its private property. once you step off cossart rd, who ever owns the property has the right to do whatever they have to do to get you off their property and that means they can shoot you. according to eeriepa.net the colt house is that barn looking thing about a couple hundred feet from the rd but who knows.

as far as what is actually the cult house no one has actually determined which building it is the strongest evidence i have seen has pointed to the dupont mansion, with the crosses for windows, about 3/5 of a mile off cossart road being the actual cult house. If anyone has a better idea/more evidence proving otherwise please share

According to the Chadd's Ford historical Society, there is no recorded evidence of any of the legends involving Cossart Road. Recently, we went up there for a visit and spoke to someone in their offices personally. They also gave us the area in which the "Cult House" was in, but would not give us the address for obvious reasons. The house is not actually the one in the pictures above and is not the one in our video on the site. The house is actually located about 1/4 mile or so up from the tree. It's past the turnaround spot a little ways. The historical society, however, was kind enough to give us a name of a previous inhabitant and we were able to write him and get a response. I will keep his name private for respect purposes, but one of the emails entailed:

Hey Guys: My brother and I find the stories to be interesting because that was my grandmothers house. When we were teens in the 70s kids started coming by and partying on the road because it was so remote. Eventually the kids developed this "urban legend" -- we heard because of the trees and the panes on the doors that "looked like upside down crosses" and kids started leaving strange markings, graffiti etc. It became quite a scene. Since we were the same age, we heard about the stories almost immediately and the whole "myth" took on a small life of its own. My grandmother, who was very sweet, was upset about the vandalism and worried about the kids drinking and smoking on that dangerous road. Neighbors would try to keep kids from congregating and cops would come out from time to time. I'm surprised the stories have lingered for so long with even more embellishment -- although I can understand that all kids need a little excitement!

And that's exactly what I expected! I'm glad to hear that the Historical Society was helpful. It's always been my experience that when they're approached with respect, they are happy to give information and put you into contact with some interesting people. When I started reading this thread, it sounded so much like the old cemetary I researched some 20 years ago, that I just suspected that the above is exactly what had happened... partying kids and a powerful urban legend.

KKK meetings anywhere in the USA aren't terribly unusual or secret for that matter. I used to live on an island in Wa. State and there was a pretty active KKK group there. They met at a house near my place about 4 times a year. They never bothered anyone, although YUCK, what a dispicable group. There probably are meetings in the area of the Devil House, but that wouldn't be that unusual.

One of the legends say that the "Cult House" is used by the KKK but in all my research nothing has come up that would link them to any sort of origin of it. However, like MissMelsWell said, it wouldnt be that unusual or ground breaking if their were kkk meetings going on near the area.

OK, I've been looking for a good explanation for this road. I grew up right down the street from it. I just got a new camera and took some pictures of the trees on the road. I'm posting them on another site and recently have been researching for what would be the creepiest thing rumor to post along with the pics. I know what I've heard, but in an effort to standardize things I've been looking into what other people have thought about it. I'm surprised about the lack of pics. It's actually the first thing in the 'Weird PA' book.

The road itself is Cossart Road and can in fact be found on many maps. I've never actually seen the 'Cult House' but the mansion of the prominent family is plainly visible from Smithsbridge Rd, en route to Cossart Road.

So for all you curious viewers out there. Here are some pics.

Last summer I was visiting a friend of mine that lives int Chads Ford, He told me about the legend and we took a trek out there in the middle of the night. There is definantly something vry eerie about this area. As we came into the area we passed a white Ford Escape that did not have its headlightrs on. We saw the trees that grow away from the road and passed by the skull tree and as we came to the end of the road, and decided to turn around and we saw a vehicle coming back towards us from where we had come nd saw it was the Ford Escape again. As we passed I looked into the windows of the SUV and it looked like noone was driving it. We proceeded to get the hell out of there. The next day we came back and I took a few pictures:

I read somewhere that the skull tree was filled in with concrete. Why was it?
DelVal Paranormal
The skull Tree is filled in with concrete. Some say it's because soo many people were sacrificing animals in it. However, more realistic, it was filled in to stabilize the tree so the foundation didn't erode away.

I can't believe this thread has been going strong since 2005. All for a little old house in PA? I live in Delaware and we used to head over to the Valley for parties back in the early 90's. We went down that road a few times and never saw anything strange. We weren't even chased by any red trucks or anything of that sort. A white van followed us out of there once but I think that was other teens doing the same thing as us. I never seen what the 'cult' house looks like up close because we were always afraid to go up there (I was afraid to even get out of the car). I can't understand why people cant find it. The road isn't that long. You can actually see it from the road.

The myth of the house is just that...a myth. It's not a cult house or any of the other off the wall stuff people think it is. It's just an old house that looks creepy. I know a couple who used to live on the road and they tell me that the only strange things that happen around there are all the teenagers who come by looking for a thrill. They also told me while they lived there the owner of the 'cult' house was an old woman who was a Du Pont. The reason for all the security is because the residents of the area are tired of all the teens pranks/vandalism and the drinking/drug use they bring to the area. I don't think they would actually chase people around. Those stories are either false or it's other teens trying to scare people.

I heard that the reason the trees grow away from the road is because the electrical wires are in the way and the power company has to cut them back. Seems to make sense since you can even see the power lines in the photos.

I've been reading most of this thread now for a while and the idea of there being a Devil House or something mysterious going on inside it with strange people in trucks driving people away from the place sounds really interesting and quite spooky. I still don't know whether or not to really believe it but it does sound like something that the public isn't allowed to know about is going on round there, especially if it has anything to do with the Du Pont family who seem creepy in themselves. Its great to be seeing some pictures of what the area looks like and wow is it creepy looking, keep up the good work with finding out more about this place, kiitos guys. original.gif

hahaa, that's great! We have some trees on my street that all have about a 90 degree angle cut out of their branches at about 10ft high (to visualize it, think of a tree, then think of a pizza with 1/4 of the pieces taken away) ... they're that way because they hang over the road and years worth city busses driving by have over time broken a square shape out of the branches and leaves. It looks totally funny when you look at them all lining the street with bus notches cut into them. rofl.gif

As bored kids in high school, we did what most DE teens do, and drive around "The Valley" (this was probably about 7 years ago). I think most of the locals teens drive around looking for Devil's Road, and you really hafta go with someone who knows exactly where it is or you will get crazy lost. Obviously the internet was around, but there really didn't used to be such detailed info.

(Sidenote: I used to live maybe 1/4 mile from Ramsey Road in Hockessin, and it has absolutely nothing to do with Cossart Road aka Devil's Road)

Anyways, I'd say we drove down Cossart Road at least 20 times over the years (a few times during the day here and there too). I've been chased, but I've also followed other cars. People go there expecting for something spooky to happen. I had a white SUV, so sometimes there would just so happen to be another car ahead of us, and they would freak and speed off. The funny thing is from all my different friends, everyone says white, black, blue, red.... it doesn't really matter. If there was any kind of SUV on the road when you were there at night, suddenly you are being "chased." Plenty of other teens do try and scare people on purpose, while other times it was a mere coincidence. Could there be security? I'm sure there could be.... but I never encountered anyone official.

Another side note, I went to college right by there at West Chester, and it is interesting to note what people call the place. Pretty much everyone I know (Hockessin, Greenville, Wilmington all in DE) called it "Devil's Road", while the kids from surrounding Chester County, PA tended to refer to it as "Satanville".

In all our trips out there, we rarely got out of the car... I'm probably the biggest wuss that ever existed. I never saw the house/church (and that will vary as well) but always heard "friends of friends who been there." Though nobody could actually ever give me the name of someone who knew the exact location.

Sorry it wasn't anything new, but just wanted to share! Oh well, it was a fun UL growing up! original.gif
