Kind of off topic, but kind of related- Isn't it true that if you put Big Red gum wrappers on your skin it starts to burn? Some of my friends did it, and they said it hurt a bit.

Boy, I hope I don't get hammered for "reposting the same thing".
Salt, ice, science? No. Four pages, umpteen months later, and you know what? It's still cold when you mixed up an hour ago!
This is just about as close to a non-worthy thread that I have seen since becoming a member.
Will some one please shoot this dead horse so that the rest of us can go ahead and cook it? Come on folks, the rest of us are hungry enough to eat a ..err...horse!

Welcome aboard, Kkina!

I was thinking about old-fashioned homemade ice cream freezers myself. Actually, you can still buy them, and they stock the salt for them in the same aisle usually.
Funny, isn't it? We think of ice cream, they all think of beer.

(Though I confess that the conjuntion of salt and ice *did* also make me think of, is it margueritas?).

Ok, well this is actually a way of self harming. And its a burn that you get rather than frost bite. Its also actually really dangerous as the ice numbs the skin making it impossible to be able to tell how much damage you are causing to the area, it's not until later that you actually know the effects. This can cause problems! As it is a burn it is also possible to have either 1st 2nd or 3rd degree burns from it if you leave the ice on long enough. This is something I don't recommend it as like i said before you don't realise how much damage you are doing until afterwards.
It happens because the salt and the melted ice combine to make a concentrated solution of brine this is what is in contact with the skin. They get into the skin and cause the tissue cells to swell killing many skin cells in the process the inflamed redness is the body repairing the damage. Or something like that anyway!
Hope this helps!
Wow, thank you for the laugh. I've never read anything so completely wrong in my life.
First of all, the effect IS frostbite. The water in the cells on your skin is literally crystallizing at such a low temperature, causing the cells to burst and die. That's what's happening here.
Secondly, the salt water doesn't enter the skin at-all, nor does its salinity have anything to do with the effect. As the salt water melts the ice, the water dissolves the salt and partially refreezes, lowering the overall freezing point of the surface ice. This means that, in the constant temperature, it has just started to melt more quickly, thus having the ability to absorb more heat from your skin. Extreme loss of heat = freezing, and freezing destroys cells. This reaction lowers the temperature on the surface of your skin to around -10ºF.
Third, the swelling isn't cause by your body trying to repair itself. It's caused by an imbalance in extracellular fluid. The cells are bursting and releasing their natural water content into the spaces between the dead cells, and this is causing a pocket of fluid to form underneath the skin.
Seeing as how this is a website formed for the purpose of education and people as to why things are or are not true, don't post such a fat load of misinformation, since you clearly have no idea how any of this works.

And by the way, for those trying to sound tough by saying that it doesn't hurt, that's just a load of bull honkey.
If you really did it to the point where it actually does anything at all, and you didn't experience pain, then I suppose you've just defied human physiology, and you're Superman.
This is frostbite. Frostbite hurts. That's all there is to it.

Actually ya, ah no. It will hurt if u do it properly. My friend was able to give himself a tatoo doing it. It didnt work to well but it does work. If u take cold ice like quite a bit. then you get salt, then put a bit of ice on ur arm, then salt, and then press teh salt into your skin with the ice and if u do it hard and long enough it will work. Well at least it did for him, I asked my science teacher and apparently doing it for long periods of time 5+ mins clots your blood which can leave a red mark and sting. From what i have seen this works.

If you put the end of a piece of string on an ice cube then sprinkle salt onto it, the string will be stuck to the ice-cube and you can pick it up by the string.

on one hand i put salt and an ice and the other hand just an ice cube. the hand with just ice the cube slipped off after a couple of seconds , while the salt and ice the cube stayed firmly in place, salt an ice i felt more and left a little markwhich i felt for about a min afterwards. but i would go as far to say pain or burning

Does this mean Margarita's should come with a warning label now?
I do know that lemon juice, salt and ice cleans coffee stains off glass or metal coffee pots better than just about anything else I've ever used, including the commercial coffee stain removers (Caffethema).

Ok, because I had nothing else to do this afternoon I tried this. Nothin', nadda, just a salty wet and cold wrist. **shrug** I tried table salt, sea salt and just for fun, Epsom salts (not really salt, but I had some so I thought I'd try)... it's the same either way--cold, wet, salty.... although my hands are real smooove after the epsom salts.

.
I'd have been better off just dumping the salt, ice and adding some cream and peaches together, then I'd have some excellent ice cream. So yes, salt and ice does freeze well... it is afterall how ice cream is made, but just putting it on your hand with a cube of ice doesn't do much.

Yes it does hurt, but it is worth it. Make a design out of the salt and then hold the ice on it untill your skin starts to bleed and you will have a cheap tatoo that stays for quite a while.

yes it hurts put salt all over the ice andsqueeze it in your hand it really hurts so try it the reason it hurts is because it melts faster making it colder than what it is if your like me and you push it to its limits then it will hurt it takes a big chunk of skin off your hand well it did to me i still have a mark on my hand from doing it at camp about a week ago when everyone else was doing it i did not learn about it here

I actually did this two years ago on my right wrist, though I don't recall for how long I did it, I had a large, slightly raised red mark for a week or so, and ever since then, i have absolutely no pigment in that spot [i'm naturally very pale anyway so it isn't that noticeable]
About a half hour ago, I did it on my stomach, and left ice on for at least 20 minutes. I have a low pain tolerance, and it does sting pretty bad, but I think that just may be the effect of ice on your for an extended period of time. After like five minutes it stopped stinging because my skin turned numb.
I'll post results in the next few days.

if it is done for along time, but it well purly due to how coild the ice is, the salt has nothing to do with it.

i tried this to my right arm in a spot that has no feeling for an extended period of time to see what effects it would have on the skin after prolonged exposure. To put it simply the exact same thing tht happens when you remove salt from the equation.
Like normal ice it did leave the skin red for a short period of time but no lasting effects.
BTW the region is on my fore arm and when I say no feeling I mean no feeling at all because the nerves in that region have been severed from the spinal chord.

This is the worst of the necroposts. It just won't stay dead! It's so easy to go ad try it, easier than it is to type in a post, faster too. Why would anyone dredge this dreck up when the kitchen has a refridgerator with an ice tray in it?
I'm sorry but, I just can't see where the mystery is in this one. It's too simply to get off your butt and go find out! My G-d, its just salt and ice. I'm sure you have both of these wonder items inthe kitchen. Stop asking and start experimenting!
The next time this thread gets drug out of the coffin, I'm going to start a thread titled "Pencils, can you really write your name with them?".
Oh-well, simple pleasures for simple minds I guess.

Dec 8 2007, 02:20 AM
this does have some ounce of truth like all urben legends, for example if you get an ice cube, some salt and some string, you can put the string on the ice cube then put some salt around and on the end of the string thats on the ice, the ice will melt and then it will re-freeze causing the string to get stuck to the ice, so the theory of this urban legend is that is you put some salt on your skin then put ice on it, your skin will get stuck to the ice, i doubt this would happen though with small amounts of ice, the most it would probably do is take some hair off your arm.
