Something dark, in the water, with three humps that looked suspiciously like Champ, the fabled monster believed to lurk in the lake’s depths. When the sun’s noon-time rays lazily lapped against Brazee’s boat, Salmon Seeker, Lake Champlain was perfectly still. Then, something that at first appeared to be a wave, came out of nowhere. "I said, ‘Mike, what’s that out there?’" Mike Barr, a long-time friend and fishing partner was tending to the outriggers in the stern of the 22-foot Starcraft. The retired pharmacist from Latham turned to look. "He says, ‘I think it’s Champ,’" Brazee recalled. The "wave" crossed 50 yards in front of the bow of the boat. That’s when Brazee realized the dark-colored wave, wasn’t a wave. It was something else.

"We watched it for a few minutes," Brazee said. Then he turned to grab a pair of binoculars, while Barr searched the boat’s glove compartment for a camera. When they finally found what they were looking for, it was gone. "It just dropped under the water," Brazee said. The Vietnam Veteran has been fishing on Lake Champlain for 40 years, and has never seen something that big.
