BurnSide
The other DOOM topic was for posting information as it came. It is now closed.
The movie is now released, and we shall now review and discuss.
It's been a long time waiting. The question is now, was the wait worth it?

Tonight, i brought my ticket for DOOM. I was there nearly 2 hours early, and it paid off, me and my bud were not only first in line, but treated to a seperate viewing of DOOM in a seperate, private theatre with only maybe 20 other people, the other cinema filled up and since i was buddies with the manager he let me go into the other one. T'was sweet.

Middle section, directly in the middle.
The screen goes dark.. and then..

The first second of the movie, i knew it was going to be something else. Something simply.. brilliant. Amazing.
Screams. People running, dying, arms being ripped from limbs stuck in elevators, steel doors pounded into dust by unseen foes, screams, blood, darkness... and nothing.

Then the title sequence. My heart, already pounding.

Doom wasn't exactly something new, at least not for the first half of the movie or so. A bunch of marines travel to a different planet to search for survivors and find out what the hell is going on, and they end up fighting monsters. Sounds familiar? But there's a wonderful twist. Firstly, the marines are all seriously screwed in the head, except for a couple. Secondly, the hundreds of bodies litering both the earth and mars transport gates, aren't staying dead...

The movie is a little slow to start, with endless dark tunnels and shadows, but once it gets going, oh it gets going. The BFG was particularly interesting to watch, although i was unfortunately dissapointed, there were no hoardes killed by it and no splattered gore. There was of course substantial gore, more than enough even for Doom. The explainations as to where the monsters came from was stupid at first, but looking back now, absolutely brilliant. Of course! It just makes sense!

And then.. the first person mode. My god, it was fantastic. There's a 10-15 min sequence towards the end where we delve into the main characters eyes as he fights and blasts and chainsaws his way through mountains of zombies and demons behind every corner. Oh, it was bliss.

If the movie loses points, it's with it's unbelievable, non-game silly end sequence, in which two super-humans, one good one bad, fight to the death. Also, the marines were so screwed up it was to the point of silliness. And there's an interesting twist which is more annoying than anything else.

I recommend DOOM to every fan of the game, every fan of buckets of gore, every fan of excellent creature-features and every fan of futuristic sci-fi guns-blazin action. If you like all that, you know you'll love this.

hahah, The Rock is on Conan right now talking about it. How awesome is that.

My scores final score: 8.5/10
Can't wait to hear your reviews, good or bad. thumbsup.gif
JayRob303
If I get the chance, I'll be see'ing it tomorrow thumbsup.gif

BTW...love the avie...lol
Shakezulah
Sounds AWESOME! I know I'm going to love this. I have to wait till tomorrow though, but it sounds completely worth it.

I have but 3 questions to ask.

1. How many first person parts are there besides the ending and how long are they?

2. On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate the gore in this movie? I heard it was very gory, but how would you rate the level of it?

3. Is any of this movie actualy creepy or scary, or is it all just mainly shooting the crap outta monsters?
BurnSide
Thank you JayRob. original.gif

Shake, your questions three.

1) There is ONE first person part. The commercials are missleading, there is only one, and it is about 10-15 minutes long.

2) 9. There could have been more, but there was definately enough.

3) I jumped twice. T'is not easy to make BurnSide jump. Yes, i would say that the movie IS scary and creepy in some parts, however said parts are quickly followed by something really funny. Overall, when watching the movie you need to remember one thing:
The movie isn't taking itself seriously.
If you can watch with that in mind, you'll enjoy the silliness more, and get the odd jump from the random scares.
Boff
I want to see this movie soooooooooo bad. And 10-15 min of just FPS!? Dear GOD!!!!

*druel*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Must...must..see!..movie!...
BurnSide
It was so freaking good. I'm telling you, i've never seen anything like it in a movie. Gun out infront, zombies around every corner, shooting off limbs and heads and tackling Imps and Barons and even fighting with a chainsaw against a Pinkie Demon.

Which was cute, becuase it was actually a guy, who's nickname was Pinkie, who got transformed into it. hahaha. Anyway, it actually reminded me alot of those 'rides' where the ride is a first-person screen and the chairs movie, if you know what i mean.
nick_fury
Wow! BS you've just otally convincedme to go see this movie
Mr Ed
Yeah Nick, it does seem like a positively glowing review. The Rock being in it put me off, but I suppose it is half term.
BurnSide
Excellent. I was hoping to give a good impression of it.
It's by no means a movie that's going to win awards or even be mentioned for greatness, it's not a good movie in those aspects. You need to expect to see a high-tech new-age B movie, in basic. But it does not fail to please at all.

I figured out at the end of the movie exactly what the story is. For the most part of the movie, there's several marines moving in packs being hunted by the monsters wondering what the hell is going on. That is not DOOM, that's ment to be BEFORE the actual 'game' starts. There's few monsters and they're just coming to grips with what's going on. As soon as one guy, 'Reaper' is left all alone passed out, he waked up and he's in the middle of hell. Alone, and that's when the actual 'game' starts.
It's really cool. Well done for a videogame movie. Keeps the aspects of the game nicely.

Ed, the Rock is possibly one of the factors the movie does loose point on. He's a little unbelievable, but he is however not the 'main' character and there is an interesting twist with his character which stems directly from the very first DOOM game and the reason why the marine was sent to mars in the first place. Indeed it did not need to be the Rock, i'm not exactly a fan of him either, but you can tell he had alot of fun doing it and put his heart into the movie, so it's no so bad.
Mr Ed
Ah ok. Well I think I will give it a viewing then.
Thanks for the reviews. tongue.gif
BurnSide
No problem i enjoy discussing it. original.gif I'm looking forward to hearing what other people thought of it, i just know there are going to be some bad reviews from someone.
Dando Kast
I'll be seeing it tomorrow night.... when I get back I'll post my review... i hope it lives up to my expectations...
BurnSide
Well, don't go with high expectations. It's entertaining for it's gore, action and general fun, but as i've said, it's not an amazing movie overall. original.gif
Dando Kast
The effects I know I'll be impressed with.. but the story is what I'm really curious about.... what's this about a scene with 'Reaper" and hell?... as long as hell is involved I should be happy...
BurnSide
By 'hell' i simply ment a place with hundreds of bodies, zombies and monsters.
There is, unfortunately, no hell. The locations are a lab complex, sewers, a quarry/dig, and another, extremely sinister, dark, very hellish-like lab/power complex. But there's no hell, no flesh-walls and stuff like that, it was kept distant from the whole 'demons coming through a gateway to hell' story from the actual games.

Spoiler

The story is actually about a group of scientists on mars discovering a civilization of dead super humans. Turns out there's a 24th chromozone or something they created, that no one knows where it came from. The scientists in this time discover the chromozone and experiment on humans with it. It is actually concentrated evil, sort off. People who are good who get injected with the gene become very strong, alert, heal fast, etc. People who are naturally evil, die. Then, they come back to life as zombies, and start transforming given time, into Imps and other forms of monsters, and try to infect other people who are naturally evil with the viral chromozone 24 while killing anyone naturally good.

Hard to explain i guess, i don't know if that makes sense.
The Skeptic Eric Raven
Saw it yesterday. Enjoyed it. Mind candy.yum
Beryth
i must till he came to french cinema alien.gif however that will be cool if the whole movie was recorded like a FPS strange idea rofl.gif
Mr Ed
Yeah, that makes sense BS.
Sounds pretty cool. I don't know much about Doom, but I think that the keeping to the Demon storyline would have been better. However I haven't seen the film yet.

I will probably see it when it comes out.
Super Pancake
Edit: My friend and I decided not to go a storm is coming!
Neo2005
I do have to agree with you BS the BFG was a little dissapointing he did more damage to his own man with it then he did the monster.
The FP was insanely cool the zombie thing with the axe was especially enjoyable.

The only real downfall was the fist fight at the end. Correct me if i'm wrong but this is DOOM isn;t it?When was there a fistfight ever.Unless you were on GOD mode.

8.0/10
Tillghast
I was suposed to see it today, but i couldnt.

Oh well.
Conspiracy
saw the movie with a friend, even tho it was a virus that transformed the people instead of it being creatures from hell it was still awesome, i found 2 spots pretty funny when that one guy falls down the hole in the sewers and sarge "what happened" horny stoner marine "i fell in a hole" and the part where the reaper becomes super human and hes running around then theres a zombie laughing right infront of him then he shoots him
Shakezulah
I just saw it tonight. Damn was that a good movie! I loved every part of it. I enjoyed the final fight between Reaper and Sarge, even though it wasn't DOOM-ish. The first person part was excellent. The creatures were amazing and looked pretty nasty. I found there to be a lot of cool scenes, such as when Destroyer fell in the holding cell. I think it could have been gorier, but nothing seems gory anymore after watching Dead Alive. Overall, this was a great movie, and it really felt like DOOM. 8.5/10
BurnSide
Excellent reviews all around.
I agree Neo, that was the one part for me they could have done without. But me, it was still a good fight.
Shakezulah
I felt that the end fight, although cool, was kinda short. It didn't seem to last very long at all. I was like "What? It's over already?". Also, the very end seemed kind of anti-climactic, but I guess they really are leaving it open for a sequel, which I hope will be just as good, or maybe even better than this.
Radioactive Man
Sounds cool!
BurnSide
There's no way there can't be a sequel.
What i didn't get was the fact that he's running through hallways blastin zombies and monsters, and then he gets to the end.. and there all gone, there's no monsters left. Where are they? Where did they go??
Shakezulah
Are you talking about the first person part, BS?
Neo2005
there were taking a break.

BTW i was so gald that the rock died in this movie. For some reason it was a pretty cool twist on the game.

I thought it kind of sucked at first when Sarge became evil and then shot the one guy in the throat, but I felt so pissed at him that I was kind of glad that he died, too. He was a cool character though.

Anyways, I want to discuss the possible story for a sequel. How would more monsters come? I mean, the Ark was blown to sh**; there's no way they could go through it.

The answer to your question is this.
It's hollywood they make sequels because they want to make money regardless of the ark being blown up they will find a way to get more monsters to kill and brutalize people.
Shakezulah
Yes, I know that Neo. tongue.gif But I'm sure there will be a logical explanation to it, which is what I'm asking about.
BurnSide
Simple. There's no way that ALL the zombies and ALL the monsters down in that area where he fought the Rock were fully killed. Come on, there were hundreds of them, and there was no explosion or anything to finish them off.

'Doom II: Hell on Earth'

They're already there. A sequel could practically start at the exact moment this movie left off, with demons coming up the elevator after them.
Neo2005
Yeah they might even put something in it like.
C24 is still in Reapers bloodstream and he transfers it somehow to an evil person and it spreads like wildfire.

Here's something funny.
Ebert & Roeper gave it 2 thumbs down.
But Ebert said something that rang true.

"The first person scene is quite annoying in the fact that it's like watching someone play a video game.Like some kid came over to your house and started playing your computer and won't let you play."

Keep in mind though that although i love E&R they never give 2 thumbs up to action movies they give them to drama's.So their not the types to be giving this movie a rating it should be left to this genre fanatics so that they can tell us what their more expert opinion is.
Super Pancake
False E@R gave many action movies 2 thumbs up when they are done good, Matrix 1,2,3 even though 2,3 suck, "i'll sleep when i'm dead", "Layer Cake," "collateral,' "Kill Bill 2," "Spartan,' to name some!

That comment about the first person perspective is some relevent if we were talking about video games I hate watching my friend play solo in any game i don't know about the movie since i did not see it yet. How about the comment Roeper said that the movie did an injustice to one of the greatest video games of all time!

Was the movie doom like with armies of monsters coming at the sarge?
Neo2005
The enemies were coming at Reaper not Sarge.

And E@R give 2 thumbs up to action movies like kille bill because their not about the action.
There about what happens in between.
Shakezulah
I only recall one scene where a hoard of enemies were charging towards someone, and that was the scene at the end when they went down the hall and all the zombies were chasing them, which I thought was pretty friggin cool.
__Kratos__
I thought the movie was awesome all around. thumbsup.gif Wish I had seen it sooner. tongue.gif

I wonder why Sarge changed his weapons a bit in. I mean, you train on a weapon you just can't go, pick up a prototype weapon in testing and fully know how to use it. Not to mention your in a situation so... wouldn't you want a gun you are alright with in your hands?
Neo2005
The only problem i had with that gun was that he used it maybe 3 times.
And ended up doing more damage to his own teamate(Portman) thatn he did any monster.
So unfortunatly the BFG was a waste.

Did anyone else notice that when he was looking at the BFG on the computer screen instead of saying big fu@#$ng gun it said Big Force Gun.
I'm not a big doom fan but is that what the gun was acually called?
BurnSide
It was used twice, and didn't kill any monsters at all with it. Bah.

It would be pretty unrealistic for a scientific weapons research team to simply call a gun a 'Big F*****g Gun' so they had to come up with something scientific to call it. It was actually called the 'Bio-Fusion Gun'. But Sarge does make a point of saying 'That's one Big, F*****g Gun!' so they're excused!
Neo2005
ok then makes sense.
So it was called the Bio-Fusion Gun in the game?
Can you use this gun in DOOM3?
BurnSide
I don't think it was ever given a name, just BFG9000.

I never played Doom3, i don't know.
Neo2005
A gun always sounds much cooler if there is a 9000 or 2000 on the end of it.
Ourmoonlitsun
I think the gun was called the "Bio-Force Gun" in Doom 3, but since Doom 1 or 2 everybody always called it by its other, more famous name. And I believe the fight at the end between Reaper and Sarge was supposed to be like a deathmatch. It was weird how they dropped the weapons after awhile, though.
BurnSide
Semper Fi

Honour to the corps.
Neo2005
I swear to god this kid behind me in the theater asked his buddy
"What does semper fi mean?
this is what his friend said
"probably some japanese saying"

BurnSide
no.gif

Kids these days.
Neo2005
I know it almost got as pissed of when i watcxhed the war of the worlds and this kid behind me said.
"just a rip off of independance day"
BurnSide
hahaha. That's just ignorant.
Neo2005
although i hope the DVD extra's on this movie are good.
