Hi chaps original.gif

I`m going to a mental asylum that was closed years ago, my mom spent a good deal of time there. She provided me with a good deal of info about the place, and im gong to check it out. So, what do i need to bring along? Any tips for starters? I`m going to check out the mourge (spell), the cellblocks where several inmates died and so on, and there is a cemetary there aswell. What do you think? I`m not a kid looking for a spook so please dont get me wrong, i found this quite interesting.

I`m also working on the Defeo case from 1974 so any info reguarding the case can be pm`d to me. Thank you for your time thumbsup.gif

Consider bringing an exorcist along, as looking for spirits is dangerous and should be taken into precautions.

LOL laugh.gif

Consider bringing a compass or a thermometor. The temperature usually goes down when theres a ghost nearby and the compas should be behaving "weirdly" too. When that happens, you should take out your camera and take a couple of pictures and see if something weird comes up yes.gif
dreamhunter
Bring a camera and tape recorder
rose_ashes
BRING:

video camera (record sounds and any activity)
camera (see if anything shows up in the pics)
tape recorder (for evps)
flashlight (so you can see where you're going...)
pen and paper (record any odd happenings)
ANOTHER PERSON (do NOT go alone)
ID (in case the authorities catch you and ask for it)
and perhaps a thermometer (to see if the temperature drops)

i guess that's about all i can think of... good luck and make sure to let us know what the results are!!!

i'm very jealous, by the way. i wish there were an old mental hospital or something of that sort around here...

Many good things here, thx so far original.gif

afraid i wont score with a chick, since i got a gf, scoring on the sideline can harm ur realtionship if u catch my drift. anyway, im not a 11 year old looking for a spook, im just curious and this is kinda facinating (spell). keep em coming btw, i gotta get back to work *sigh*
jonb
take a GOOD camera. a lot of pictures i see on here must be the first ever digital cameras ever made. if possible bring either a nice quality digital camera, a film SLR type film camera (the big style cameras) orr if you could afford it a digital slr, i say these types because the compact digital cameras are much more prone to picking up dust and crap, i dont really have any valid reason to say this other than experience from cameras ive used. maybe the larger lens' help to reduce reflections from smaller light sources in front of the camera, or actually it is probably the position of the flash. i dunno... god luck anyway

get a pair of heat vision Goggles. I don't know how much they got there, but the army/navy store where I live sells them for about 70 bucks.

Okay, basics you need to know:

1 - Bring an LED light that you will use most of the time, so you don't attract authorities and use a blue or red lense to prevent any mistaken shots of the flashlight as orbs.

2 - Orbs are not real, so don't get stuck on orbs if you get any. Don't go hunting after it rains right away. if you go right after it rain, you might get orbs from the moisture in the air. But, it is good to go a few after it rains so by then, no rain moisture still lingering in the air, and enough moisture though, to hold all the dust on the ground to prevent "dust orbs"

3 - EVP's work good if it is set down in one spot to prevent noises made by you by accident. Anthing above 500 hz is more than likely not anything paranormal... so leave the recorder there in one spot and walk around and ask questions. Be polite and respectful....

4 - bring someone for safety, and not someone who is interested in the paranormal. They can influence you, and then you will do "wishful thinking" and see things that are not really there. I would rather believe a skeptic that's scared crapless than a believer that is scared. the moment they think they hear something, it causes you to imagine things too.

5 - ask " can I take your picture" before taking pictures though it's sounds stupid, ity's more respectful. When you first enter active area, walk around and take notice in things. If there is an entity, they will get a chance to feel you out. That might help your chances of being more successful in experinces, because they could be okay with certain people.

6 - Be sure to bring a notebook to draw out maps and strange incidences. Also, in case you need to log something or for locations so you do not get lost. Having notes will really help, so when you return during the day to see what it was you saw at night, it might help explain many things. For example : something glowing at night...during the day, it could have been a empty bag of chips that was shining from your flashlight.

7 - be respectful!!!!

let me know if you need any other questions answered....

Some good basic items have been mentioned in previous posts. Depending upon how much you want to dig into your wallet for this little venture, be sure to check out Paranormal Investigations Outfitters. They have EMF detection meters which measure electromagnetic field disruptions, as well as other equipment that measures everything from radiation to temperature output. Best of luck to you. alien.gif

If you bring down one, can you tell the rest of us how it taste like?
AlteredVoices
been a while sence i last posted, so sorry bout that.
hunting is a hobby of mine which im very passionate about, awhile back i asked the same question as you.
and there is alot of nice anwser given to your questions already an i couldnt help my self so heres my two cents..

1) never go it alone, really, if you even think the activity/hunt is just to capture e.v.p.('s)
things can/and sometimes get very active this includes actual contact/physical interaction with unseen forces (yes that has happend to me, just last friday).

2) follow the horror movie rule.
never seperate from the group, anything could happen this is like the buddy rule.
even if you accedently tripped of your own free will and needed medical assistance, the group/buddies are there to help you out in any such case, and no one is getting picked off one at a time lol.

3) always carry spares.
this applies to your light sources/batterys/small non noisy snacks, and dont litter, more less bring enough stuff to last the duration of your visit but dont bring to much to encomber your self, remember you hae a buddy to help carry crap as well.

4)get permission. this is important not only should you be respectful to what ever entities you may encounter you make clear with the autherity/or whome ever mantaines the property if its ok for you to be there, that may sounds like a big bummer but its a lot better then handen out cash for bail and fines of trespassen.

5) positive mind set.
when im just goofen around i still remain resectful even if at that time its just sh** and giggles(i carry a cheap d.v.r. and xtra batteries, its sad i know but one can never tell when youll end up in a cemetary or spooky area then get that whatif thought and then your outa luck).
always remain a skeptic and a beliver, this allows you the ablity to rule out all false hits and sometimes what remains is positive leads you can follow up.
bring your faith whatever you faith may be,ive found that my faith allows me to get past most particulay nasty events includen profane e.v.p.('s) ive been called every name in the book it seems in four diffrent languages as far as i can tell.
in short its kinda ok to be scared but never show it if you can half ingnore something sometimes the activity will end.

**good cheap stuff a beginer could bring**
a compass is not very reliable, i mean it could work but if there is something near yah like pipes/running water the list goes on it could cause the compas to go wild which in turn may cause you to use up some of your resources. but if thats all you have then by all means bring just know that normaly if theres actual activity in the room it dosent last that long normaly unless its gonna hard core manifest its self some how,so its going wild and you not getting any temp change then its likly next to nothen.

a non contact temp gun used to gauge tempetures of food in most resteraunts, this will shoot out a red laser so whatever it touches gets a temp read out(ex.walls ceilings floors furniture vents doors ect.). is not to expensive and its sorta ok not very accuret but better then the thing your parents would put in your mouth, ear or pooper when your sick.

go out and get your self a cheap dvr(digital voice recorder)and a bunch of batteries for it.
i carry a cheap one on me all the time some cost under 30.00 bucks my what if dvr dosent even have a outlet to attach to my puter so if i find something and wanna analyse i need to rerecord it through my mic, its ok but the quality is lowerd this way like i said its my cheap what if dvr.

digital cameras/or disposable cameras. normaly i just buy disposable digital cameras.
its nice cause when your done your done and when there developed you can have them put on a disc for yah and all those you wish to show like us plus here in kentucky there only like 8.00 bucks a pop..

also bring your wits/smarts, just be cool im sure youll get spooked if not well then have fun..

ohh yeah can any one explain to me why i cant add attachments been trying for days got some stuff to show yahs?
AlteredVoices
well more or less wondering how your investagation went did you find anything out of the norm?

I was going to start a topic about this but, now that I see it is mentioned here I will continue with it.
I need some help with recording EVPs. I have been doing a lot of reading regarding them and I have decided that I will give them a try.
I obviously know that I need an voice recorder. But, is there a specific kind that is better?
I read that it should have an external microphone with a cord a few feet long to minimize the sounds of the internal machinery in the recorder.
Are the old fashioned ones better or the new fangled digital recorders?
Also could someone recommend a good program for loading sound clips, filtering them, cleaning them up, etc.?
I'm hoping to go shopping tomorrow for my materials and maybe hit the cemetary on my way home grin2.gif

For EVP - use a voice activated mini recorder best ones can be plugged into a laptop for better sound enhancement, with a light indicator. It will blink when it is recording something. You don't need to go to those places, the average has about 5 to 10 spirits

Those places you mentioned the spirits will be violent, especially if you do not know how to handle them, regardless if you're alone or with a friend. An exorcist, can only help during possession and not before. Thermometers not just for cold spots but increase of heat, it depends on the entity, the surrounding area will respond not always cold, some very hot. Spirits tend to relive what they went through, especially when it resulted in sudden death, so becareful, they may lash out.

compasses can react to the normal human body especially if you're wearing a belt, body's electro magnetic field and ions. wear something that covers your neck, long sleeves, long pants, boots, why, if worse comees to pass, it helps prevent scratching, bitting, pulling, even the worse case which was in a hospital, a female nurse wearing a dress was raped by a male entity. Video camera to film the surroundings, sometimes you don't see it, when they appear, but on playback, bingo, your entity comes up and says hello. make sure you eat light food for both the filming and the reviewing, cause your stomach will turn.

Also bring an average film camera, to snap pictures of everyone, the surrounding and interested areas. have a list of questions no more than 5 questions, I have found entities to be short fused, and lack the patience and attention span to ask a bunch of questions. Allow a minute for them to respond (responding is a bit short b/c they lack a fleshly vocal cords to say their peace) Ask for name, why here? what can you do to help them crossover, what message they have for the living? whatever you want.

Bring a few light sources (flash lights, extra battery, latterns) don't depend on the place, the building itself for the light, the entities can affect their surrounding especially when it was home to them and now the living coming to interrogate them. review exits, make sure they work, make sure you have a means if worse come to pass, you can go out as you came in. If you pick anything from the location, ask permission, and inform them as to why you are displacing something in their environment. If you fail to do so, they will follow you home, or wherever you go, until it is restored. Finally, when exiting, say thank you, for allowing you passage, for allowing you the item if one was removed, and to grant you a safe passage out. When exiting do not look back. Hopefully, this helps. Good luck.

Now I see why so many entities get upset. When you go to the cemetary, bring a knife with you, even if its a kitchen knife, however, you can never use it for kitchen use again. upon entering the cemetery ground, take the knife and plunge into the ground and speak to the baron. The knife holds down what ever ill mannered entity that would harm the living and the baron is usually the first person buried there. You ask them for permission and for safe passage both in and out. Once you're done. Say thank you, pull the knife, don't look back, get to your car, transportaition whatever, even if on foot, if you can avoid crossing somewhere you walked before. And don't step on any graves while you're doing your experiment. if you do, apologies. If you have a bad feeling, stop, pack up, and leave, using the exit manner mentioned above.

Once you're done, don't go home right away, because sometimes spirits have the neck to follow and especially if your foot housed some dirt from their grave, then you just displaced them and brought them home. so go somewhere, best point the beach, clean up best as possible, just not at home. Dust your shoes, shake your clothes, remove jackets and shake it, near the water, than pay the water, throw a dime, a quarter, whatever, but pay it, like that it holds the spirit. go home, but don't sleep or nap right away. That's all, if I forgot anything, I will post it on later, otherwise, good luck.

Ummm..no offense...but, you are joking right?
First off, I'd probably be arrested if someone saw me going into a cemetery with a knife and then plunging it into the ground. They would think I am someone who escaped from a mental asylum.
I plan on being courteous to all the spirits there. I have found a good on-line guide about how it is nice to introduce yourself, explain what you are trying to do, etc.
And what is the deal with cleaning your shoes? I never would step on someone's grave intentionally. Are you saying people should clean their shoes after every time they visit the cemetery because they might take spirits home?
I'm not trying to sound demeaning towards your advice but, it seems a little too far-fetched for me.
Now I am not a paranormal researcher or expert though I do have great interest in the subject matter. And everyone has to start somewhere...so, I thought EVPs would be a great starting point.
Like I have mentioned, I have done my research on proper procedures and etiquette regarding EVPs. I will be going during the daytime with my husband.
I'm gathering from your advice that you think it is best to leave things be and to not attempt any kind of contact? May I ask why you think recording EVPs would be so unsettling to the spirits?
AlteredVoices
wow that whole knife thing sounded very hard core to me.

"kalib whats the deal with the knife are you into diffrent types of spirituality and such?"

any practices / or rituals people use work only best for them or the entity's they come incontact with.
so sticken a knife in the ground wont nessesary help you if you beleve it wont/ or might not.
this is why i stated bring your faith, if your a christian then pray or ask for a exersist help if need be, but only if your christian, you know what faith you are bring that..
not every/anything can protech you, eccept you and your faith. but this is not something some one should slip lightly into.
just know what ever higher type power you belive in it can help you in times of need, this is a generalized refrence to all or most belifes. im only staten that cause im not a practioner of all religions, perhapes it works for one to stick a knife in the ground but it may not work for thoughs who belive it wont.

me being a christian all i do as far as cleaning up is ask for the spirits to leave or comand them to but this for me even sometimes is difficult for i have to be in the right state of mind to do so for my self personaly, this dose not mean my faith is weak, nor does it mean it ll be difficult for you.

personaly as far as evp recordings go if you wanna captur good evps the use a decint not good evp recorder.
why? when spirits/entitys speak to you they work off of the devise its self, now although a good dvr wont make much internal noise you still need need back ground noise of some sort for evp to work..

i dont know why this is but if you get any readens with a good or decent dvr the ones that are legit are clear and help to comfire what your doing..
i would recomend a cheap dvr in side of most buildings which have very little noise,or a top of the line if your out side why.
there is much more noise out side then in, and the intities usualy create distortions in the recordings.
i dont think personaly that the enternal or external noise hurts so long as you keep notes of the happenings, i say this only because in my experiance that the interanal or external help me to pick out the actual readens via the sound differentials(they where easier to detect/ hear beacuse the noise changed).

i wouldnt go all spiritual or ritual on people who wanna learn because that may not be there case, truly there interested and thats half of it the rest is sticken to it i call it a hobby but its a expensive one so i need to work to do .

so,
1) go in a group that shares the same belifes as you or be opened minded enough that theres will work.
2) bring your equiptment and extras, light, energy sourcses.
3) be resepectful of both the liven and dead.
4) stay together, or at least try to stay conected via comincation some how so if you injured or in trouble the others know about it.
5) be serious and have fun. why?
when bEing serious your mindful of every thing, your surrondings, what you can see, what you cant. when haven fun its just happening its not goona last forever like when you get out of school you get a rl job that eats up your life, haven fun means you can walk away from it if you decide too and just let it go(although this is a light hearted stance some times if your faith/will is not strong enough things can/will follow you home.me i just egnore them and they get weaker or compleatly stop you may need to seek spiritual help to stop the most sever activitys but if you dont belive in them, it will do no good sticken a knife in the ground if you do not belive in it, SO BRING YOUR FAITH WHAT EVER IT MAY BE!). yes.gif
