So the pc I use for the internet is not working it starts up but when I log into any of the user names I can't do nothing! I try to open the start window on the taskbar but it wont let me the mouse just turn in an hour glass and wont let me click it open. I try to open one of the applications on the desktop same thing! I tried costumer service they were no help, I tried safe mode same thing! Is there a virus that does that?

In a way it was my fault norton antivirus told me to upgrade and resume the subscription months ago i did not and neglected it I found out I had about 35 viruses and a few spyware programs, I cleaned it up since then. But the real problems started when i upgraded to the new aol 9.0 security edition my computer and online connection would just act up.

Only thing I could suggest is a re-install of your OS. What it sounds like is some of your drivers are corrupted or just not there. Norton is a piece of crap... go with Mcafee (much more reliabe) and pay for the subscription so your up to date as well. On top of that you should get a program like WinCleaner to get rid of internet junk, cookies, broken registries, etc. I've never used AOL and never really seen the point in using it.... if you don't really need it I would just stick with IE or Firefox as a browser and make sure they are up to date with the security packets. If your using programs to DL games, music, movies, etc.... get rid of it, they cause nothing but problems for your PC. I hope that helps... when I get home tonight I'll try and log in and send you the links to some products that are good to use...

See if you can do a System Restore before reinstalling your OS, it could save you quite a bit of time if it works. If not than take Black Ops' advice. What is your RAM like? If you have a low RAM than it can cause similar problems to what you have. So if I were you, I would do a System Restore (back to when your pc was in working order), if that doesn't work just reinstall your OS. If that still doesn't work than I would try upgrading my RAM (Or atleast check you have sufficient RAM). thumbsup.gif

LOL i usually get 1000 infections and clean them out with spyware doctor spybot adaware and spysubtract and then Walalala vaccine to my infections!

I tried system restore nothing! I don't know how I would check my ram, I'm not the computer savvy i used to be!

Black Ops may be right when i would turn off my pc would pop up and say a whole bunch of drivers are corrupted or missing!

Would I need to get a new os cd (miscrosoft xp) to reinstall the os or do I need to use the original os cd cause either I lost it or the computer already came with xp installed?
Dando Kast
You would need the original to coincide with the serial code.... you might be better off taking it to a computert repair shop and having them back up the important files you want and then they can do a OS wipe and reinstall for you. If you do purchase Windows XP make sure you get JUST the cd. If you go to Best Buy it will retail for about $299 or somehting like that (I'm in Canada so I'm not sure about US prices) but if you purchase it from the repair shop and just get the CD you avoid paying for all the books and manuels that come with and it should only cost around $99....

To check your ram:

Click 'Start"
Click 'settings'
Click 'control panel'
Click 'system' (if you've never been here you may have to choose the option for classic view)

The ram will be on that page at the bottom.

Let me know how it works out.

thanks black ops?

if your PC came with WinXP installed, you should have a restore CD that came with it. It has the OS on it... gl! yes.gif

Only if he ordered the back up CD with it... normally an extra cost.

Not very important but there is a quicker way to do that. Just right click 'My Computer' on te desktop and click properties. thumbsup.gif

I just done that, and I was reminded how bad my computer is. 100mb RAM. Oh the pain sad.gif

If you don't see properties it's under 'view system information'.... at least that's what it says on XP.

100MB? blink.gif ouch.... I'd be hittin' up your friends to see if they have any extra RAM laying around... I got an extra 250 for like $20 from one of my friends recently....

so i got a windows xp and want to install it how should i clear the old os and install the new one. and I don't care about the files saved on the hard drive so how do i get rid of those also.
Dando Kast
Insert the CD and it should give you the option to just switch it over to XP while saving all other files or to do a new install. Your old OS is still gonna be there though.. to switch OS's I always find it way easier to go to a shop.. if you already have the CD it won't cost too much at all.... they wipe the original from the hardrive and start from scratch...

funny thing it's been a month since I got this pc to work with a brand new os.

but I noticed that both my disk drives are not in my computer. Did I have to install them? and how would i go about doing this?

Drives are simple to install. Look for a guide on google.
Super Pancake
there installed what I meant that they do not show up in the folder my computer.

You need to set the jumpers correctly on the drive. On the top of a drive there is usually a jumper diagram. Set your main drive as "Master". If you are using them as secondary drives you need to set them as slave or cable select. Go with slave if you don't know what cable select is. That will make them show up in my computer.

thanks
