LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's heatwave, which has claimed dozens of sunburn and heat exhaustion victims, has now produced its first case of frostbite.

A motorist was diagnosed with the condition after driving with his toes too close to the air conditioning vent on the 250 mile journey from London to Manchester.

One of his toes started to turn black and another went blue.

"It was incredibly hot," Mike Ball, 46, told the Guardian newspaper. "I slipped off my shoe and sock because my car is an automatic and I don't need to use my left foot.

"I didn't realize anything was wrong until the next day when my foot was extremely painful."

Ball went to his doctor and was prescribed a cure for mild frostbite. He is expected to make a full recovery.

This is a great story. Every nationality has much to sing about, and much to dislike, but only a Brit could get frostbite in a car in the middle of a heatwave. Hooray for my countryfolk!

um just how cold does it have to be before he realizes it's cold?!

driving without shoes is dangerous. Does anyone have stats? I remember there was a staff member at my high school, and she drove without her shoes, her toes got callousy and eventually she developed gangrene and they shriveled up and well she was missing toes. She wore opened toed shoe, so I know tis true... Plus all she did was complain about her missing toes. It was like over 10 years ago, so I don't remember how many toes, but I ain't ever gonna drive without shoes.
