Full Version: Chanting for cures?

My dad told me a story of when he was a little boy.

He had a wart on his hand and his Uncle said let me see that.

He started chanting some words and the wart fell off his hand and he was healed.

This is like unbelievable.

But why would daddy lie about something like this?

Has anyone heard of chants that cure warts?

huh.gif

I don't know about any chanting wart remover. I can assume that your southern heritage might have something to do with it. Southerners have some good old stories. They can cover about every subject with a tale. He was probably telling you one of those tales he learned from his daddy and so on and so on.
101
Maybe so. I don't know. He said it worked though. I mean we are raised in the south.

There are all kinds of stories like that around here. My grandmother told me stories about a woman who could heal burns just by touching them. Not sure how much I believe that.

The wart thing I've actually had done to me though. There was no chanting. This guy just ran his fingers over it one day in my dad's shop and it fell off like two days later.

coincidence nothing more nothing less.

101 its an old wives tale, mate.
101
Well why would it work then?

On several people...

Mexicans here have what they call witches that can make the soft spot in the childs head raise or they can help the child learn to talk by doing something to their palate in their mouth. I think some are old wives tales but some say that it really works and if they aren't done the child will not talk right. But what about the white or black kids who have this not performed? huh.gif

101 what is the point of beleiving in these folk lores??? IMO its like chanting to get the house painted, nothing but good storys someones imagination works real well. I have never heard of the other you are talking of I know of some folk remedys but chanting and praying aren't part of any that work, namaste sheri

I don't know. I just know people do believe in these old tales and are healed. I have never had it happen to me. But my friend's mother in law was mexican and she would do these things to make sure her granddaughter was going to come out okay. It is wild.

I also had one of Mackenzie's first babysitter who was born in Mexico and her mother said that if you do not (submerge in water) bathe the whole time your pregnant you will not recieve stretch marks. Mireya did not listen and got stretch marks. But her mother has had 8 kids and not a single stretch mark. huh.gif

101 i have had 3 children and no chants and don't have a stretch mark, that in and of itself wouldn't be enough to even consider this stuff as viable, you really live in the boonies or what?? I'm not picking on you just wondering, You don't really beleive this do you? namsate sheri

sounds to me like "power of suggestion" where someone believes in this chanting so much it turns out to work, sort of like a placebo working to heal someone who's ill. disgust.gif
101
I never said I believed it. And it wasn't chanting that prevented the strecth marks silly. Reread the post.

Yes I live in the boonies. laugh.gif

But I do not live in Mexico and that is where a lot of what I heard came from. These women are witches of sorts. I will see if I can find a web page about it.

But yes a lot of these things have happened to be true. It is their magic. Do you not believe in magic?

I did not see it but the friends I know who have are not liers. They have no reason to lie. especially when one was skeptical about it. She was not so sure about the whole thing to begin with.

101 no I don't beleive in magic as real, Namaste Sheri

Why don't you believe in magic? It isn't even associated with my God.

But the mexicans use what they call white magic. It is used with symbols of cruucifix and the virgin mary (guadalupe) They use this as magic. But I don't know if they are really are doing my God's will by using whitemagic. Maybe this magic is more pagan. It is a part of their heritage.

I could not find any info.

101 the majority of the Mexicans are Catholic, same God different religon IMO, I have outgrown the need to be comforted by beleif constructs dreamed up by mankind, you know it was all fun to beleive in Santa and the tooth fairy for a time but then you have to grow up. that is waht I think about religon and magic spells , just doesn't serve me where I say i want to go , I have to see what is really so and do what works i want to be part of creating a better world not keeping it the way it is. but I'm of the phlosophy you have to do what works for you too. 101 Alot of that stuff is just superstition. I'm mexican and you wouldnt believe half the stuff that goes around. I have never heard that your supposed to bathe fully in water when your pregnant. I have heard that if you rub ether on your stomach it will prevent you from having stretch marks. my sister in law has 8 kids and she uses that method. There's the evil eye. where if someone looks at your baby with ill intent they can get sick from the other persons bad energy so you tie a red string on the baby or place it on his forehead. There's an egg rub where they rub you down with some eggs and its supposed to take away any accumulated bad energy. You can tie straw together in the form of a cross with a red string and hang it in the entrances to your home and its supposed to keep away bed energy. The only real thing i have seen work is when a baby gets sick from eating either undercooked flour or something else and they get kinda of like a stomach flu. they will turn the baby upside down and pull up on the lower portion of the skin on their back and it pops their spine within a few hours the baby gets better. This is also done with adults but they dont seem to get inflicted as often so its not to common practice on adults. If any of the other stuff works I think it has more to do with the power of the mind and less to do with the actual practices. Same as a placebo affect.

That is awesome Sanchera. I always thought that those superstitions were neat.

I think you may be right about it just being coincidence. But it is still interesting that it happens. yes.gif

I don't know... I've personally witnessed and willfully participated in 20,000 to 60,000 people of all ages, races, beliefs, nationalities, et cetera chanting along with Garcia, Weir, Lesh, Mydland, Welnick, Hornsby, Hart, Kreutzman, et al from NYC to SF over 400 times between 1979 and 1995 and each and every person there would tell you that they were "cured" of whatever "ills" they may have had for at least the duration of the performance.

Never ever never saw anyone walk out of GD show without a smile and a song!

Yes, it is true that some people can actually "talk" warts off of people and they can also "talk" the fire or burn out of people. I had a wart talked off of me and my neighbor talked the "fire" out of my baby daughter, she had a really bad sunburn and she is very fair skinned. I have seen these things and I know that they are true and yes I am from
the south.
