Why does there need to be a hierarchal structure in religions like catholicism and the eastern churches? In my view people should make their own views and think about god rather than just believing what youre told by some old cardinal, patriarch or pope.

I agree.... But there needs to be a system of hiearchy so that there are a few people who can spend all their time studying the scriptures so everyone can have the best understanding of them that they possibly can.

The heirarchy is ultimately useless for salvation. Indeed the church is ultimately useless for this - it is only within the heart of the individual that this can be found.

As with any organization, there needs to be a heirarchy. Otherwise things won't get done.

On a practical note, to be eligible for the heirarchy involves years of study that most people won't ever have an opportunity to do, so they can be fountains of information and knowledge and (possibly) wisdom.
