First glimpse at King Kong remake
By Tom Bishop
BBC News entertainment reporter

Footage from Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong has been shown in the UK for the first time.
A trailer and unfinished 14-minute action sequence from the highly anticipated movie was screened in London, watched by film critics and the BBC News website.

The three-hour epic, said to have cost $207m (£117m), will not be released in the US and UK until December.

The clip was preceded by footage of director Jackson, who won the best director Oscar in 2004 for Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

He talked of his love of the original 1933 King Kong movie, which showed the giant gorilla terrorising and protecting Fay Wray's heroine.

"I believed that to see this wonderful movie made with the technology we have today would be a really amazing thing," he said.

"I want the film to do to audiences today what it did to me when I was nine years old watching the original."
The fast-paced trailer showed Naomi Watts in the role of heroine Ann Darrow, pursued by the gorilla Kong across a jungle landscape inhabited by dinosaurs, then into a city.

The impressive computer-generated gorilla was based upon the movements and facial expressions of actor Andy Serkis, who also played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The cast also includes School of Rock star Jack Black as film-maker Carl Denham and The Pianist's Adrien Brody as playwright Jack Driscoll.

Iconic sequence

The trailer gave a tantalising glimpse of Jackson's version of the iconic sequence showing Kong clutching the heroine while standing atop a skyscraper, as aircraft shoot at him.

"This is no mere monster movie," Kong actor Andy Serkis told the BBC News website.

"It is very much a character piece and very much about relationships. A lot of the themes in the film are about isolation and love, with all the characters isolated in some way."

Serkis said it was much more demanding to play Kong than the spindly Gollum.
"The scale and proportion of the character was hard to get used to at first," he said. "Once I had become accustomed to that, I had to master Kong's facial expressions and his amplified roar."

He said the director enabled him to make Kong both terrifying and sympathetic.

"Of course the computer animators take a lot of the credit for what's going on, but with Peter's help I really fleshed out the character," Serkis said.

The action sequence demonstrated this, as it began with Ann Darrow's attempt to escape Kong but ended with her tentatively trusting the giant creature.

Ravenous dinosaur

As she fled through the jungle she encountered one ravenous dinosaur after another, each realistically rendered in computer graphics.

She was chased through trees and vines at breakneck speed, before the dialogue-free sequence ended with Kong coming to her rescue in a bloodthirsty standoff with a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

"If the rest of the film lives up to that sequence, I cannot wait," said Dan Jolin, reviews editor of Empire magazine.
"Watching it reminded me how it felt to see Jurassic Park for the first time. I was completely impressed, it was so well crafted as an action sequence."

Mr Jolin said the fast-paced clip made the prospect of watching the entire three-hour epic less daunting.

"My only worry was that there was a little overkill. Did Peter Jackson really need to have her chased by three Tyrannosaurs? One or two would have been enough."

Total Film magazine's editor-at-large, Matt Mueller, described the unfinished footage as "extremely encouraging".

"The whole sequence was extremely busy, with fast camera movement and a number of genuine surprises," he said.

"The level of detail that has been put into Kong and the dinosaurs made them much more believable."
Mr Mueller said it was clear that the film had been a major undertaking, with reports that production had gone $32m (£18m) over budget.

"Will Peter Jackson have time to get that level of detail into the entire film, for its release next month? I think he will."

King Kong is due to be released in the US on 14 December and in the UK one day later.

That's the first thing I thought when I read the title of the topic. Game screens, as well as still shots have been out for a while. Game Informer did a big issue about the game version.

Wow are you guys behind. The trailers been on TV here now for a good month or so. laugh.gif
The final theatrical trailer is now out, which can be found on every half decent movie site on the net.

I was amazed to see the scene where KK combats the T-rex seems to very closely follow the cinematography of the original, as far as camera angles and what not.

...why do they keep making re-makes?! disgust.gif Would it kill someone to make a new idea?

Try writing a new idea for a movie sometime soon. You'll find that someone probably has done something very similar to it before. This is why movie studios are buying up video game and other properties, to find something that is vaguely new.

Although, remakes of good movies are generally not as good as the originals. Remakes of movies not many people remember may seem better, but only becsuase not many people have seen the originals. A remake of The Wizard of Oz would bomb, no matter how well it was made because people would like the classic better. Not many people have seen the original Ocean's 11, and thus can't compare it to the new one.

There have been previews for this movie at the cinemas for ages now. Everyone down here cant wait for it to be released and even the game looks to be pretty good.

I think a lot of the film was Jackson's homage to the original. I know there were some scenes, frame for frame, based on the Bashki (sp?) version of Fellowship of the Rings present in Peter's own. I think he likes to pay tribute to his film inspirations.

Looks awesome. I've only seen one trailer, which I beleive to be the first full trailer. But it looks so good. And the score really adds to it. Oh and when I heard King Kong roar for the first time, it sent shivers down my back lol..

But I'm still looking more forward to Harry Potter... Well actually, it's probably more or less tied with HP and then Narnia.

where KK combats the T-rex

According to the action figures its not a T-rex in this one, its called a Ventrosaus Rex or something similar. Basically its an excuse for Jackson to make it look more accgressive and bigger than a T-rex just by having a new species only found on this island.

I am sooooooooooooo waiting for this to come out. I saw the trailer when I went to WotW and it looks like my kind of movie grin2.gif. I even tried to get the XBOX game but it's not out yet. However the girl on the counter somehow has previewed it and said it's mad.

Waiting....waiting.......

When it does come out I'll be back to this thread for my review. It better be good for making me wait so damn long!
Paranoid Android
Yeah, I'm hanging out for the show. I saw an ad for it while watching Serenity (a very cool movie, you should see it if it hasn't stopped playing). It looks awesome.

By sensible do you mean bigger, so it realisticly hold off the giantic animals on the island? Well from the trailer shows it looks like the wall is so big it looks like it could laugh off a nuke.

No, what I referred to was that in the other two King Kongs, the wall around the village was tall and strong enough to keep King Kong out but it had a door in it big enough for King Kong to enter! Why???

Plot device. So he the door could open and he could take the girl tongue.gif

Anyway, don't the natives worship Kong? (I can't remember I haven't seen either remake in at least 10 years). Maybe it was to keep out the dinosaurs, not Kong.
JennRose
Ok, just had a chance to see this. It's amazing--- I think I cried 3 or 4 times during it. crying.gif And the fight scenes on the island with Kong vs monsters are incredible. Peter Jackson is my hero. This is not a perfect film (for one thing, Naomi Watts never once gets scratched or bruisesd even after being flung around in a jungle in a nightgown), but what is done right is done SO right. Kong is absolutely believable as a character and will break your heart.

Go see it!! w00t.gif
BurnSide
How did you see it so early?
JennRose
Surprise sneak preview this weekend. grin2.gif It blew away my expectations. Mainly that Jack Black actually has some acting chops.

It's pretty scary, though. The island natives are FREAKY, as well as a pit full of giant bugs. ph34r.gif Jackson still has some horror director left in him.
BurnSide
Awesome, you're very lucky!
I can't wait to see it. Thanks for upping my anticipation. original.gif
JennRose
Well, it was at the newest and nicest theater in town, so the sound was deafening and helped with the experience. But to further up your expectations, the audience actually stood up and gave it a standing ovation when it was over. I've NEVER seen that happen in a movie before. laugh.gif
BurnSide
laugh.gif I saw people clap once and i thought that was abit silly. A standing ovation, jeeze that's cheesy. hahahah
JennRose
Yeah, it's a little pointless for a movie screen. A play or concert, yes, but a movie...? Oh well, it did mean everyone enjoyed the hell out of it.
