As many of you know I work at Kmart at the Service Desk..... this evening a fella came in with a nasty dirty bag and himself in the same condition and asked if he could leave the bag at the service desk while he shopped. At our store we let ya walk in with anything and leave with anything - you could rob us blind and probably not get caught. Anyway so I said sure that is fine. He left the bag - for several hours and I finally began to be suspcious. So I had another employee there and I said watch me while I find some ID in this guys bag.I opened up a small tin exepecting to find ID or cash or something - I found pot! Immediately I put it back in the bag and got my manager....he took it in the back and after further investigation found there was also crack cocaine! So we called the cops - while my manager was on the phone with the cops the guy called! And I play it off and I am lik sir I am covering for her on her break I am really busy can I get your name and number and call you back - and he's like why would you need that and I am like because I cant look right now I'm very busy! He's like well I will just come down there and by that time you should have found it and I am like ok thats fine sir. So I *69 him....this call is out of your area. Oh right...so the guy gets there before the cops and I have to give him his bag - and the cops show up like 30 minutes later.......you couldn't get a cop if there were an emergency! So as far as I know the guy got off po.gif But it puzzles me - why did he leave it at the SD?! I suppose he thought we might think he was shoplifting and want to search his bag......UGH!

Just curious about something Anirbas, and not trying to critcise or start an argument...but...Are you entitled to go through a persons private property that is left at your service counter ?. I'm not trying to defend the guy but I would have thought you would need more of a reason to go into someones bag than he was gone for a few hours.
Once again i'm not trying to cause a fight I am just curious on how that works.

I'm not sure - I too questioned that Oracle. It could have been considered abandoned....and suspicious - in all honesty I am not sure. At first I thought that oh he has left a bomb or something - and a fellow co-worker was there and I said that the guy had been gone for some time (like at least two hours) and I said well watch as I go through this so I can get some ID and find out who it belongs to and page them....it was innocent but I do see your point. I think that at that point we considered it abandonded.....no clue hows that original.gif

I'm not tottally shocked either Sabrina , your suggestion of him not wanting to be picked up for shoplifting with it is probably accurate . I'd even go as far as saying he was in there to steal in the first place .

Oracle in my line of buisness We are obligated to go through bags left behind but only the ones that are left behind not ones that have been checked in by some one . If someone leaves there bag behind at my work we have to get it back to them, before they end up back at there country of origin .

Also wanted to say .....It's sad that in this day and age a bag left behind could be malicious and the thought that it could be a bomb a realistic one .

Thanx Kismit and Sabrina original.gif
I understand totally where you guys are coming from but the guy did ask if he could leave it there and he also phoned later to say he would come and pick it up. It might be a good idea in future for anyone who works in a situation were you are accepting the responsibity to look after someones things to get a name, address, and phone number from them first in case of such an event.
Like I said before...I'm not trying to defend the person or cause any trouble. I'm just trying to get another point of view across. original.gif

Just to clarifyhe called AFTER I looked into it - like abnout 10 minutes after when we were on the phone with the police original.gif
