gee zero, if you feel that way, you should quit now, before you too become an 'unsocial geek'.

As for 'socially adapt' (do you mean 'adept'?), one could say the same about 17 y/o's debating serious tpics, no?

I'm very sociable, enjoy discussing various subjects--that's why I enjoy UM. That said, I could ask the same of you. You spend quite a bit of time here. Are you sociably adept?

Not a scientist. And how do you know? I have a good friend who is a physicist and absolutely great fun.

I was just saying that it seems like these people are constantly studying or debating, that they never seem to have time to 1. Be social, 2. Not be what society calls a "geek".

Well, it's enjoyable--at least for me--to study, learn, and debate. I find learning something new on a daily basis very exciting. And, again, I could ask the same of you. You frequent this site--and I'm sure others--quite often. Are you sociable, a "geek"?

zero, People have studied these things over many years. The years you haven't lived yet. You are curious though, so one day you will have the knowledge that we have. Be patient, listen and continue asking questions.

So I WILL have the knowledge you have? Depends on wich subject you're talking about. I have a few in mine I'm quite educated in.
Also to learn you must keep in mind that things other that what you believe in might be possible.

Yes learning everday and studying- reading etc. Is awesome. I might be a geek or whatever but I have always been. But I do have friends to that do not like the same things. They think I am eccentric. But I just do the things they like. Then I talk to older people about the more educational topics. Sometimes talking about the same things gets old. So you talk about other things- evolution, spirituality, ghosts, loch ness monster. Even if we cannot prove them we can still try. w00t.gif

^ Yes, that's right. I love to learn, but it's good to be into things that include your friends too, even if it's not your thing. Just because I have a big interest in something, doesn't mean that I can't learn/investigate theories and answers to other things.

You may have noticed that I don't believe in God, lol, grin2.gif but I still have an interest in other peoples' thoughts on this subject and have friends who DO believe - YES! I can involve myself in other things too.

Nah I'm kool with "geeks". My best friend is a geek. I'm just saying most Scientists are what most people call "geeks".

Think about this. Is it really wrong to think "BLAH!" when you see a man in a thong? Of course it is!

Now, I said that because "geeks" can be more social if they tried. That's all. And I know alot of you will defend the geeks, and I have no problem with that because my best friend is what I call a geek. He even admits to bein a geek, lol. He has a hard time with girls because of it also, and he tries to be social but it just doesn't work. Sometimes it depresses him so I try to help'em out and make him feel better by teaching him to be more social and teach him the things he shouldn't be talking to girls about. Well, at least the girls he goes after. He'll have to settle for a geek girlfriend if he doesn't let me help'em.

I have nothing against geeks, I just feel bad for those who try to be social and can't be. And they're not all that fun to be around. Constant big words gets annoying -_-.

I must say that I used to believe in God and all that stuff when I was a kid, but the older I get and the more I look around, I'm slowly starting to lose my faith and steer more towards Agnostic.

I do believe in an afterlife, but not like it talks about in the bible. I don't believe in heaven or hell like it's described in there. Some place with fire and brimstone, or paved with gold. Nah, because what about the people who could care less about gold? I personally would rather "heaven" be paved in platinum and diamonds or something like that. grin2.gif

My house is haunted with 2 ghosts, so over the years I've decided that when we die, we all just go into a sort of "spirit world" or something. Kinda like we're just on another plane or dimension, that sometimes intersects with the world of the living (i.e. haunting). I believe our life in the flesh is just the tip of the iceberg.

I also believe in reincarnation (not every time... just certain people and certain instances), although human into human only, not human into insect or any of that other crap like some religions believe. I seriously doubt great grandma would come back as a louse on some monkey's head.

As far as organized religion and stuff goes, I don't really go for that anymore. It's cool to be "spiritual" (as I am) and I definately believe in Karma, but I will tell yall one thing, that whole Noah's Ark and David & Goliath thing were just stories they made up to sell bibles. The fact of the matter is in the real world, sometimes Goliath kicks the holy sh** out of David. rofl.gif grin2.gif laugh.gif

welcome redraider,

what led you to decide a human could not reincarnate into a worm (or something else non-human)? Usually people are either yes or no to reincarnation, not yes with restrictions.
PLO
well i got a theory about, i beleive only the one species can reincarnate into itself again, in order to maintane a balance of nature. So for every one that dies, a new life in case of humans a child is conceived for their sole and vice versa.

Cuase if not, then the billions of tons of plankton that get gulpd a year from those sneaky pyscic whales what bring an immense disruption if a few billion humans were to appear every year.

so its basicaly tit for tat, one dies, ones born, ones born, one dies.

Maybe if we achieve a truly fulfild life though are souls can get reincarted to something better, or if were bad somethign worse. But that i think is inherintly flawed and is a subtle and extremely cunning way for bhuddists to create a system of morality that should be adhered to through fear, and as we all know thats a bad thing, so that bit of it cant be true, sneaky bhudists.

theres also the question that why would aworm be considered lower than a seagul

D'YARRR BY JONATHAN LIVINSTONE SEAGULL!!!!!!
RedRaider9981
Thanks Hyperactive.

Yes, I agree with you PLO.

I don't believe cold-blooded creatures like bugs and snakes, etc. have souls. I do believe people, as well as a lot of warm-blooded animals (i.e. many people have seen ghosts of cats, dogs, horses, etc.) have souls. I don't know of any reports of people ever seeing ghosts of lizards, frogs, worms, etc.

But as far as reincarnation goes, I think that a human soul can only fit with a human body, and the same for animals. I myself have been told i'm an "old soul" by at least 10 different people throughout my life. I seriously wouldn't doubt it if I am.

But my theory is, when you die your soul goes into like a pool (spirit world) and either you stay there forever, or, after x amount of time, your number is up and you get sent back into earth to start a new life. But with the birthrate ever surpassing the death rate, new souls still need to be manufactured to keep the balance in check.

Some people live just the one life and that's it. But others (myself included) keep on going 'till we get it right (whatever the hell that may be). The soul is the original factory material (OEM), and all the bodies you go through are aftermarket modifications. [sorry, i'm a car nut]
RedRaider9981
I once saw a funny t-shirt that said "I'm an atheist because it's God's plan."

It reminds me of what someone on here said about "Why give us free will if God already knows who will trust him and who won't" lol. If yall ever want to hear something really funny and interesting on the perspective of religion, just download a piece by my hero George Carlin entitled "There is no God," and "Religion." They are both also towards the end of the "You're All Diseased" HBO special. Also, check out his "Ten Commandments" bit, at the end of the "Complaints and Grievances" HBO special.

Meanwhile, I understand that we as a society must have law and order if our civilization is ever going to make it beyond the animal kingdom, but I don't think we should have so many laws derived from biblical text.

For example: Prostitution. Having sex is perfectly legal, so why in the hell is it illegal to sell something that's perfectly legal to give away!? That would be like telling somebody they can give drugs to the kid on the corner, they just can't SELL the drugs to him. I can't follow the logic on that at all. But it's a very old law that's been on the books probably since the 1700's and it's derived from the bible. What ever happend to separation of church and state!?

And I would bet dollars to donuts that those little grey alien bastards have had at least some influence on the shaping and development of our world over the last 10,000+ years. I think they look at us like we look at animals. For all we know, we may be just some big development project of theirs on a cosmic scale (far fetched I know, but possible nonetheless). mellow.gif

Ok, before any of you religious people come in here and start saying how I'm going to go to hell, and turned into salt or whatever, read this WHOLE thing.
(Some of the things I say here may have been posted in replies to other topics)

I believe that God is completely made up. Throughout many thousands of years and civilizations all over the globe, societies have had a God or gods. This is because they have no better explanation for misunderstood things. "There was an earthquake!!! God is angry!" "Our crops grew tall this year!!! God is pleased!" "This lady woke up from a coma!!! It's a miracle, God saved her!" And so with the common belief that god controls everything we have accepted his rule and everything he does is right. "My grandma dies!!! God did that for a reason!" and so on.

The reason that civilization made God or gods was to keep everyone in line. So many more people would resist stealing and murdering if they thought they would go to hell if they did so. Everyone would be a better person if they thought they would go to heaven for it. God was created to help people stick together and prosper. And I don't think it was a bad thing! Society might not have advanced past what middle eastern poor people have now if they didn't make it, so it was a great idea to conjure that illusion up!

And isn't it convenient that there is no way of proving any of this stuff. Is there a heaven, only the dead know. Is there a god, same answer. How do I know there is a God? You just have to believe....... That last remark is what really bugs me about religion. You just have to believe. What are we believing in? are we believing the priest that there is a God? How does HE know?? He believed a different priest and here is how the telephone game starts. You start out saying "oh Ted has a funny face", and it ends up as "Green books taste like toe jam!" There is no credibility. Religion is worse! It has gone on for thousands of years!

The ancient greeks would have sworn on their lives that there were really manticores, cyclopses and chimeras, but no we know they don't exist. And the same thing happens with christians and angels. maybe they don't see them as frequently, but they believe. If there really is a god, then the bibles MUST be false. This is a quote I got off of comedy central (tv) and i think it is true while funny. I'm not sure it is really a quote though because I don't remember it word for word. "The bible says God doesn't want me to do my sister, but it also says that adam and eve created all humanity and if they had kids, there would be no one else for them to do! Someone had to bang their sister."

I might have forgotten some stuff, but I am tired and it's like midnight here so if you Christians want to attack me now, go ahead, I'm sure there is plenty of stuff in there for you to find holes in, but once you point them out to me, I WILL fill them in.

ok every one that is geting up in his face shut the hell up hes just sayin what he belives like me i belive god is real but i dont like him.

Okay, for one, I don't completely understand "Bible-Jargon", so can you translate it for me? And two, the bit I did understand (Psalms 14:1) is the biggest load of bulls**t I've ever read. That's nowhere near being true and is quite insulting to anyone it's referring to. disgust.gif

The reason some people use bible quotes is because they can't think for themselves. They have to rely on their storybook to answer any questions about god. Why don't they get it that we're just not interested in this book of fables and using it to prove anything is ridiculous. disgust.gif

Whenever I doubt God, I always think back to the first martyr for Jesus; St. Stephen...Knowing how people are, I wonder why he gave his life up if there was not something that happened so profound in his life, that he would be willing to do this (I could use many more examples but you get the picture)...We are humans and I don't know about you, but most of us are not willing to 'go gently into that goodnight'...or go kicking and screaming for that matter...

Besides. There's just too much unexplained sh** that happens in this world to believe it's all amino acids coming together 4 billion years ago, and given enough time, those two (or more) amino acids built an all-wheel drive Porsche 935...Put into those terms, it gives even the most dihard athiest pause...

Personally, I don't think God is anything like the Brahma, Allah nor the Judeo-Christian God I worship (but my Christianity give me a good template for life). We probably won't ever know. However, if your swear up and down that there is no God...you'd better pray you're right...if you're right; no loss for there was nothing to gain. If you are wrong... devil.gif

Belief really isn't an issue with real mystical experience; anyone who tells you it is--they're the ones who are faking, you can bet on it. Nobody has to believe. You don't have to believe in a sun in the sky, or that people tend to have five fingers on each hand. I don't have to believe that I regularly receive the thoughts of other people without them saying anything or that I sometimes know what's going to happen before it does or that the world around me is consious; that the world has things to tell me and does so.

One of the peculiar consequences of consciousness is free will. Free will is interesting. You can absolutely know what will piss your girlfriend off, as if she were wired with an anger button. You can push the button again and again and again with the same result. But then, one day, you do "the thing" and she just smiles. She's changed; same person, same history, same baggage, but a different result. Not random, not predetermined, but willful. She made a choice that changed the way she sees you.

Consciousness does that. The world around us is conscious and can change its mind too. Consciousness is real, but it does not produce good lab results. innocent.gif
