I think this belongs in this section, I mean its bezare and 'to strange yet could be true.

well, I'll get all started anyhoo's. ok, well, a realtivley new theory of the four past mass extinctions (yup, there were 3 mass extinctions way before the age of the dinosuars were wiped out). this theory is called 'Verneshot', where basically the earth opens up a giant cavity, the country sinks in and then shoots out into space, floats for a while in space before it comes crashing back into earth.
If you think you’ve seen it all, just picture this: your entire country, launched into space. Sounds weird, right? Still, it could happen any day, scientists say. In fact: the country-launching thing may be responsible for the death of the dinosaurs, 65 million years ago.

I can't link because it doesnt go to the correct page, its diverted back to the main section. so i'll link you to the page, and in the side menu look for 'verneshot' under the 'earth' sub-heading.

Wow what a theory. Not sure if that one will ever stand up though. Seems plausible depending of the size of the cork? hmm.gif

I've heard of a similar theory that the Earth flips poles every so often and this has happened three times before the dinosaurs, with their extinction being the last (not got any links to hand right now, saw this on Discovery a few years back... Will have a looksee what I can dredge up)

*LOL* did a Google on "earth reverse pole" and this is the first site - The Guardian/Observer no less...

Link to Reverse Magnetic Pole article

Very odd....scarey too. Though I wonder if anyone in the central area would be there when it was shot up! Sounds like it was be fun but the fee would be 99% death. 5 people might survive...but I doubt it.

Me again laugh.gif

Just had a good read of this rather than a skim through. I wonder if this is why we're getting all this extreme weather lately?

QUOTE

For more than 100 years, scientists have noted the strength of Earth's magnetic field has been declining, but have disagreed about interpretations. Some said its drop was a precursor to reversal, others argued it merely indicated some temporary variation in field strength has been occurring.

Yes many of us know and its a fact that the earths magnetic field is declining

Somehow, i got the strangest vision of having a bad case of diarrhea when reading your post. wacko.gif

heh, by the way, this theory has nothing to do with the earths magnetic field, just caverns deep within the earths crust (below impenetrable layers of crust) filling with gas and becoming extremley pressured. so that when it gets to much, BANG a countries in space.

reading the article, I had the same Idea... atmosphere warming, weather changes... unsure.gif

That is just a naturally ocurring process. As the Earth's core cools. It's magnetic field loses strength.
As for launching a continent in space. The theory is a caldera or "super volcano" such as the Siberian? traps or Yellowstone. When they blow they make a big mess. Yellowstone is actually overdue and it will spew ash over 1/3 of the continent.

huh.gif...

Exactly...what evidence is there to support this?! How would a whole "Country", a country being in fact designated by us humans not by anything geological, just sink for no reason, then shoot into space, and come back down?!?! It sounds like a comepletely random theory to me that has no backing at all. dontgetit.gif

heh, appariently it does have facts, that were proposed by german(?) scientists, although I can't find a link to these facts on that site. but still, it'd be a way to go tongue.gif. free ride up into space and then well... splat....
