For fantasy, something that makes the reader emotional.

Emotions are always important. They make characters deep and rich. But what, specifically, do you feel is important and preferable?

My favourite author is Alexander Dumas, the author of my favourite book The Count Of Monte Cristo.
So... revenge and some guy name Cristo?

Here's a list of what I like:
Tension
Minimal gore
Human characters
Settings in modern day or past
Minimal romance
Emotional conflicts
That's all I can think of for now, will have to post more as I think of them.

Believe it or not it can be quite entertaining. Psychological suspense over gore takes talent though.

A lot of people said the Japanese film Ringu is a good example of suspenseful horror with less blood. Haven't seen the film though. But in America, ketchup is what it's all about. It's been pretty prevalent since the 80s.

WOW!!!!
This thread took off like a chupacabra at sunrise!
At present, all my main characters are humans. But there are plans for OTH (Other Then Human) characters.
I've included a little romance/sex. This first story in the Covenant of Thorns requires it as part of plot.
Blood and carnage are sporadic. Not too much for me, but readers will have to judge what's enough or too much. There's a lot of investigation of incidents after the fact.
It's set in the modern day era.
Check my 'Covenant of Thorns' thread in the 'Writer's Hangout'. It'll have a little more info on my twisted world.

OK....Good responses so far.
Now, here's a tougher one.
Would you prefer something more fantastic, like a 'Van Helsing' or 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'? Or more gritty, and realistic, lke 'X-Files'?
Give me a movie or book that is in sync eith your taste.

I think more tension, less blood. I wrote a series about some killer zombies and it was really really really gory and it was not scary at all, because there was no rythem to the story. it was one moment some people were having dinner and next moment some zombies bash into their houses and they are left beheaded, disembowelled, and the corpses left in a blood splattered house with the zombies leaving a trail of stench behind (plus maggots) THE END. see, no rythem or suspense.
plus: with the second question, I think Jeepers Creepers 2 is a good sort of mix of fantasy and reality.

I liked the first jeepers creepers better there was more mystery you didn’t know what was going to happen
in the second you know what he was
and it was just predictable
