How come everybody keeps saying the universe is finite? How do we know that? If the universe has a limit, then just what lies outside of it? From the looks of it, it looks pretty infinite to me. yes.gif alien.gif

I voted yes to all 3 of them.

Do they exist? Don't know.

Do they exist detail? Don't know

have they visited Earth? Don't know

Reason for choosing these answers: Because I don't know tongue.gif
Lilly
Actually, the debate continues regarding the finite verses infinite nature of the universe.
Quantem Singularity
Very few things are infinite, if the universe was infinite it will all burn out by 1 trillion years, horrible realy.

We both know that when people here say "alien" they're refering to extraterrestrial biological entities, not spiritual entities.

If you want to throw angels into that pool, you should be willing to thus not only admit that they could very well not exist, but that they are no more special than humans.

An angel may or may not be biological or spiritual. Who is to say spititual life cannot evolve, and that alien life on other planets is not spiritual life?

iS AN ANGEL NOT AN EXTRATERRESTRIAL ENTITY THAT FOR ALL YOU KNOW IS BIOLOGICAL all beit more advanced than us?

Why is it neccessary for me to admit they may not exist, for my opinion to be valid? and why must they be no more special than humans??????????
Quantem Singularity
Ok, but the chances of not one little micro organism being out there is so slim.

Well, biological life would imply that they live and die just like normal humans.

For all I know, it is commonly accepted that an angel is a spiritual entity, because biological entities have many limitations.

Hell, you should be willing to admit that they will not exist even if you dont consider them biological entities, because you dont know whether they exist or not.

Because they'd be biological, just as humans, and thus would have pretty much the same limitations.

As long as theres a chance, it means you dont know.

And I'd really like to know where you get all these "chances" from...

Billions of galaxies, each with billions of stars, and of those billions say 1000 stars with planets.

Even if angels aren't biological, they would still be aliens, they come from somewhere other then earth and are not humans.

Yup, but those are part of religion and people dont usually interchange the terms. Either way, angels arent proven to exist any more than aliens.

And what if the chances of life arising would be 1 in 1 billion x 1 billion x 1 billion?

Why not answer me please STELLAR??????????????
Quantem Singularity
Yes but there are billions of galaxy clusters. So that gives us even more chances then we need. 1,000,000,000x1,000,000,000x1,000,000,000x1,000, so 1000 worlds of life at least.

You do not seem to grasp what I just said. How can you say that there are at least 1000 worlds of life at least? You dont know what the chances of life starting are. So if there are 1bx1bx1bx1000 planets in the universe (both of us are using fictional numbers), how do you know that the chances of life spawning arent 1bx1bx1bx1bx1000?

I don't, where using fictional numbers right? The odds coud be 1:154 or 1:10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

My thinking is not limited and square in no way. Yes, life can probably eventually become immortal (to a degree) and all that, but at one point they would pretty much have to die, because if, from the start, they were immortal (and they reproduced, which is necessary for evolution to take place) they would face the problem of overpopulation. Not only that, but biological being suffer from other limitations, such as, if you cut off the things head, its pretty much given that that thing is going to die. Cut off its source of nutrition, it will die. Etc.
Quantem Singularity
They could be like elves, they live forever but can be killed, this would explain them visting earth (which I disagree with).
Stellar
thats what I meant by immortality to a degree. Eitherway, it would lead to overpopulation.

Unless, they killed their people after a certain amount of time. Or sent em all on space ships to other planets.
Radioactive Man
LOL, "Do Aliens Exist" has decended into Angelic Elves.

Okay, back on topic, I find the idea of older alien races intriguing, the things is that the universe is so big, overpopulation wouldn't be a problem for longer lived races. Especially since, if you have the technology to travel the stars, you probably have the technology to harvest the resources, terraform, and the like. As far as immortality, I don't see that happening in biological forms, though maybe something borg-ish, whcih I believe is more plausible. Especially if these beings have the same penchant of human beings, wanting to achieve perfection.

I doubt that would happen in the first place. Secondly, if it did, I wouldnt consider them immortal, because that'd be basically, in the end, an artificially controled limited lifespan.

I doubt any life would spawn with the knowledge and infrastructure necessary to construct space ships. It takes time to get to that point.

No, but I'm saying that if a race began without a limited lifespan, they would overpopulate their planet before being able to colonise new planets.

I ment after a period of time.
