A MAN who tested positive for HIV, the virus that causes Aids, has subsequently shown up negative for the disease in a case that has mystified doctors.

It was claimed last night that Andrew Stimpson, 25, may have shaken off the virus with his own immune system after contracting HIV in 2002.

If proved, the NHS has said the case would be “medically remarkable”. It could provide vital information to researchers looking into treatments for HIV and Aids, which has killed about 3,800 people in Britain since the 1980s.

The worldwide annual death toll is more than 3m.

The Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS trust, which treated Stimpson, has said he needs to undergo more tests before it can be established how he apparently conquered HIV.

“These tests were accurate and they were his, but what we don’t know at the moment is why that has happened, and we want him to come back in for more tests,” said a spokeswoman. “It is potentially a fantastic thing.”

Stimpson was tested three times in August 2002 at the Victoria clinic for sexual health in central London and the results showed he was producing HIV antibodies to fight the disease.

Stimpson, originally from Largs in Ayrshire, contracted the virus from his boyfriend, Juan Gomez, 44. He began taking vitamins and other dietary supplements to keep his body healthy in the hopes that this might fend off the development of full-blown Aids.

In October 2003, after impressing doctors with his good health, Stimpson was offered a new test, which came back negative. Further tests in December 2003 and March last year also proved negative.

“It was the last thing I expected. I was astonished. I was baffled too,” he told the News of the World. “I couldn’t understand how anyone could cure themselves of HIV . . . I thought it had to be wrong because no one can recover from HIV, it just doesn’t happen.”

The tests were re-checked by the Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Trust when Stimpson threatened litigation believing there must be a mistake, but the results confirmed all the tests had been accurate.

In a letter understood to be from the NHS Litigation Authority in October this year, Stimpson was told: “The fact you have recovered from a positive antibody result to a negative result is exceptional and medically remarkable.”

The trust said there had been several other cases of claimed “spontaneous clearance” of the virus worldwide, although it is not believed any have been proved. A spokeswoman added that the trust had urged Stimpson to return for tests, but that so far he had not done so.

This might be the breakthrough scientists are looking for that can help turn the tide in the fight against HIV.

But if he was tested multiple times on different occasions that would be highly unlikely.

It seems there is a quite a plethora of ways it affects people. Look at Magic Johnson, he's had HIV for YEARS and as far as I know has never developed AIDS.

They seemed to emphatically rule that out with the first reports anyway...they say the results were accurate and were his .........did anyone see newsnight on bbc2 last night ?
Mr Ed
It seems like it might be too good to be true, apparently the guy is saying that he won't undergo any study.

You know, if this is actually true... I get the feeling that pharmaceutical company's will be all up in a tizzy.

Aren't some people immune against the virus though? I'm not certain, but I explicitly remember reading a study where there was a very small population of people who were immune against the HIV/AIDS virus because they were descendants of those who survived the Black Plague. Apparently their genes mutated to the point where they were super resistent to the AIDS virus. It sounded like complete bulls*** to me back then, but when I think about it, it makes perfect sense.
I dunno, what's your take on it?

All disease & sickness is caused by man thoughts & therefore his attention. I know this will be difficult for a lot of people to understand. As you can say that there are all these viruses & germs which have a life of their own. Man has the ability to create his own positive environment or mood if you will. This has a direct relationship to his physical body. The fact that quite often he doesn't, or simply does not pay attention to his own body nor his environment properly can have deadly consequences. If one puts oneself in harm's way, so to speak, even not knowingly, it is left to the body of a man to protect itself (or oneself).
I think the pharmaceutical companies are nothing but vultures who prey on man's weaknesses in exchange for $ & they do not solve or cure anything!@#$. Anything that is required for healthy living (life!) should not have to be payed for at all. This being said, simply put, man can cure or kill as he so desires.
What is truly fascinating is not that one guy is now apparently cured of hiv, but that humanity as a whole is so ignorant & weak. We rely on doctors who cannot cure, nor have any real knowledge of the truth of our beings. In the USA, The Hospital Kaiser Permannte, runs this commercial with the bold statement-"Thrive". What a laugh. If you have no money they will put you out with the garbage. In fact the only way for them to exist is to keep everyone thinking & believing that they are sick, will be sick, and that quite often there is no cure whatsoever except to keep coming back & to take those damn expensive pills. Like they say what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger

well said anomly. I am a supporter of natural cures, myself, and have done extensive research on the government (FDA mostly) and found some interesting things that are supposedly done.

On to another note about this man... that's great. This could bring a major change for the better-- Maybe they can find what exactly it will take to cure HIV/AIDS. However, I doubt that will happen because the government will lose a lot of money if they do.

And I seriously doubt it's a case of misdiagnosis since it was stated that the guy was tested over several times just to make sure. I believe that it's true.original.gif

True this is wholesome. But now "the incredible healing HIV man", is going to be "the incredible healing lab rat"
