I was right it was disgusting.

However, I thought Elephantus (whatever) was very rare, so to see a group of seven natives with the disease, and all the same area of the body, is a bit unusual to say the least?

I agree elephantitis and they look painful. With a small top frame and large mass of tissue in her legs; I can imagine that walking was difficult and often cumbersome. The pain she must have suffered. Poor dear! Maybe she has incarnated with a better pair of legs. Given the time that the photo was taken-the medical technology wasn't available for her-never mind the taunts from onlookers.

We know more about the condition now than we did back in the 1800's and no doubt some doctors today would have at least been able to make her life far more comfortable then in the 1800's.
