Child molestation charged; woman allegedly pregnant

GAINESVILLE, Georgia (AP) -- A 37-year-old woman was charged with child molestation after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy whom she married last week.

The woman also is allegedly pregnant with the boy's child, though paternity hasn't yet been determined, his grandmother and guardian told The Associated Press on Monday.

"You hear about stuff like this from the TV, but it's not reality," Judy Ann Hayles said. "But (this) happened. And this won't be over because a baby is on the way." (Watch the officiant describe the driveway nuptials -- 1:42)

Lisa Lynnette Clark was arrested Wednesday and remained in custody Monday. A preliminary hearing is set for November 30.

Hayles filed a police report on October 6 when she learned from a friend that Clark was pregnant. About a month later, before authorities made their move, the two were married.

In Georgia, a person must be 18 to marry without parental consent or 16 to marry with parental consent. But if the couple has a child or the woman can show she is pregnant, the age requirement doesn't apply.

District Attorney Lee Darragh said Georgia law on child molestation says that a person under 16 legally cannot consent to a sexual act. Darragh would not comment further on the case.

Hayles said she knew her grandson was spending a lot of time with his best friend's mother, but she had no real objections until she found love letters and lurid photos from Clark.

Hayles' grandson had been spending every weekend with Clark's son. In July, the two boys were charged with burglarizing a neighbor's home and sent to a youth detention center for 45 days.

Hayles said her grandson during that stay received the letters from Clark, along with seductive photos of her posing on top of a mantle and in a bikini.

Hayles said she hopes to get an annulment or a divorce for her grandson.

Hayles, who lives on the outskirts of this northeast Georgia town, said that if the baby is shown to be her grandson's, she's not optimistic about the teen's future.

"This child's life is down the tubes," she said. "What's he going to do with a kid? He's not even old enough to buy groceries."

love is a crazy thing these days....heck for all we know the 2 are madly in love...and they were made for each other. But thats just my thoughts...if a 37 year old and a 15 year old want to get married and have kids....i feel that is their decision and nobody elses.

The age restriction isn't there to spoil anyones fun, it's there because generally children of that age are easily influenced and led astray.

Mid - teenage years can be very confusing and all it can take is an irresponsible adult to trick a child into doing things they don't want to do.

That's why the law is there, that's why this woman should be punished and that's why if they REALLY are in love they could have waited another year, less that that actually.

This is good for the kids ego. Bad for the mother.

And the kid can always say to his friend " oh yeah I **** your mom"

I agree. In my opinion, I don't think this kid knew what he was doing. Hope I don't offend anyone but I find this disgusting, and I feel sorry for the kid's friend. Scarred for life.

I don't understand what a 37 yr old woman finds appealing in a 15 yr old boy. I find this pretty gross. I've read some where that the couple had been dating for about two years or something, that is just wrong . I feel bad for that woman's children, all of them.

She should be charged the same as if the sexes were reversed. She took something from this young boy, something he as of yet fully understands the importance of. She took advantage of a young child. I know I am going to upset a lot of the younger folks here but a 15 year old has absolutely no idea about life and the ramifications of what has happened to him. This woman is sick and should be kept away from society for a very long time. Then if she ever gets out of prison placed on strict house arrest until she is so old that sex is nothing but a faint memory.

that's a little harsh dont you think? All they did was have sex and they have a baby on the way....just look at how things were a few hundred years ago....but I do feel she was wrong for what she did....but it's not like she raped the boy....im sure the boy enjoyed every minute of it...

But if there is a 15 year old girl who consents to sleeping with a 37 year-old man, it's looked at very differently. I think it's disgusting either way (just my opinion), and I agree that he probably didn't know the ramifications of this.

A 15 year old does not have the mental development to make a commitment like marriage. It is hard enough at 30 much less 15.

This is just SOOOOO wrong! People can fall in love with someone who is a very different age from them and if they can overcome the inherent obstacles and their love is strong enough to last that's fine if they're both consenting adults! There HAS to be a dividing line between what's legal and what's illegal. Otherwise there would be no way to protect those who are too young and immature to protect themselves. For a 37-year old to enter into a sexual relationship with a 15-year old (and if they were "dating" for 2 years he was only 12 or 13 at the outset!) is rape, pure and simple, rather he "enjoyed" it or not!

I am sure that 12 year old girls married in past times too.

These days it is unusual for teenagers to marry and have children, and even people in their early twenties. Well in Australia it is anyway, I can't speak for the States.

So throughout history children have been abused, does that make it right?

In most of the United States this kind of thing is prosecuted. DOes anyone here remember the teacher and her 13 year old lover? They did eventually get married, after she got out of jail.
