Magician David Blaine plans to be suspended from a crane in a small Perspex box without food for more than six weeks in his first UK stunt. Blaine will have no communication or any distractions. His only source of nourishment will be a tube feeding him water. His past stunts have included standing on a 100ft high pole in New York for 35 hours and encasing himself in six tons of ice for three days. Sky One and Channel 4 are to screen the event, which starts on 5 September on the banks of the River Thames in London. It will be the first time he has attempted one of his weird feats outside his native US. Blaine, who has a third eye tattooed on his palm, said: "There will be no trickery and no means of escape." Explaining his reasons, he added: "We are all capable of infinitely more than we believe. We are stronger and more resourceful than we know, and we can endure much more than we think we can.
"In truth, the only restrictions on our capacity to astonish ourselves and each other are imposed by our own minds. "My next performance will demonstrate these ideas through the most extreme exercise in isolation and physical deprivation ever attempted." Sky One will show him going into the box live on 5 September 5 at 2000 BST, with Channel 4 showing the footage three days later at 2200 BST. His exit will be live on Sky One on 19 October and screened by Channel 4 on 20 October.

I'm presuming he's allowed to pay a visit to the little magicians room, or is that why the box will suspended over the river ?

I kind of like him. He did a trick on my mom once when she was in california. He just seems like a neat guy.

Ever seen that 'levitation' trick that he does that makes him look like he's floating several inches above the ground ? That completely baffled me the first time I saw him doing that.
As for how he can survive without food in a box for 6 weeks - either he's an expert at mind over matter, or there's something more to it than meets the eye. Perhaps he's going to eat masses of food for weeks beforehand to compensate.

they are all tricks... he's not going to actually stay in that box for 6 weeks, more like 6 minutes, or hours... then again just before they open it up...
and the levitaion is soo easy to do, there are so many ways to do it... But his favorite are camera tricks... he'll film himself holding himself up by his hands (but camera only shows feet) then he films a fake audience freaking out... it's so pathetic how he does his tricks, thats why i hate him so much... and the levitations with real audiences is quite simple too, you just have to get them all at the right angle, then just turn one of your feet sideways, and lift up with you toes with that foot! I'm sure many people seen how he did it, btu they wouldnt show those ones on TV now would they!
hmm, bringing a fly back from the dead... got a freezer? you can do it too! freeze a fly, they go comatose, take him out, heat him up, and wham, a live fly!
he has no super powers, just a normal joe with a camera and a magic book

I like David Blaine even if what he does is just an illusion then I don't care , he is still very good at what he does .. As for the little boys room , in te article I read earlier today about this it said he would have the use of one drinking tube and one peeing tube , yes perhaps that is why his next to a river ...

| David Blaine used various camera shots in his TV special with the audience reaction being filmed close up and linked to other clips of him in mid air with some of the angles showing the Balducci levitation. |

The camera angle would have hidden the props...This film would have been mixed in with the audience clips in the studios later.

I personally think that David Blaine is doing what he loves and does best and nobody has any right to say otherwise. People need to come to grips with the fact that he is an entertainer and entertainers need to do whatever is necessary to please their audiences. He's not getting much money out of this stunt anyway, he'll probably make enough to pay his medical bills to recover. I believe this is his most dangerous act yet and I also believe that this is no illusion. You can watch him 24/7 on television and I can tell you this is no trick. He really needs support from the people of London. After the events I saw today ( eggs and milk cartons being thrown at his box) I feel ashamed to call myself a British. Im glad they took him higher so that they can avoid this happening again but although they have subdued the physical abuse they cannot stop the verbal abuse. If you are planning on getting drunk and have nothing better to do with your life than to go and harass people who are doing what they love then you seriously need to evaluate what your purpose in life is. Everybody needs to chill out and stop being so critical of him. David is in confinement in a plastic box with no food for 44 days. Give him a break! He's an entertainer right? So stop taking this so seriously, sit back and enjoy the show.

ok first... how is it a trick. he is an clear plastic box. theres always gona be people standing there watching him, even in the night. so how does he get out?
and the levitations? what about the one where they show his whole body, head to feet, shot from behind, in the video? that was pretty awesome. stop making all his tricks sound so retarded.

At first I could see no possible way in which anybody could intefere or tamper with this stunt, i.e. people sneaking him food etc. or him changing for a body double. But last night it was reported that some people had shown up on the scene and started to throw eggs, golf balls and other objects at the suspended box. David Blaine was apparently very angry about this, and eventually the box was lowered, supposedly for cleaning as the eggs had obscured the view of mr Blaine inside his box. Also at the same time, the Live Sky 24hr feed went offline due to technical dificulties. Now I maybe reading too much into this, but could it be, as David Blaine is the self proclaimed greatest illusionist of our time, that these egg throwing yobbos are paid actors, and they are being paid to show up and pelt the box with various objects, forcing Blaine's crew to lower the box for 'cleaning'. While this was being done surely it would be very easy for small amounts of food or something like that to be passsed to David? And why did the live Sky 24 hr feed cut out at this point as well? This might also explain why the stunt is taking place in London and not New York, as you wouldn't expect New Yorkers to turn up in numbers and start abusing David and throwing objects at him, would you? But in London you would, as us Brits are notoriously cynical and London is home to a good few drunken yobbos! So the cover story is already there. And why were these missile throwing 'yobbos' allowed to hang around so long, where is the security, the police? It all smells a bit fishy at the moment... If anybody has any thoughts on the points I have made then please reply.

And for the person who claimed he wasn't getting much money for this 'stunt'. He actually stands to earn a cool £5 million! I would certainly say is being handsomely rewarded for this cherade.

How do you know the water is just water? It would be easy to slip vitamins, protein and glucose into it, and it would still be clear. Also, there are pillows and stuff in his box, it would be more than easy to stash pills necessary for his suvival in this mess, which he could take in the night when it is dark and he can go unnoticed.
And that levitation several feet in the air was a camera trick.

I think you're being hard on yourself here flyest_angel. Anybody who has freely decided to spent 44 days hanging up in a little glass box in the middle of a major city is going to get abuse.
Personally I'd never heard of Blaine until I read this thread, but my considered opinion is that he's a bit of a prat; if you want to prove some cosmic point about mind over matter there's no need to do it suspended over a river in one of the major cities of the western world.
And he has done nothing to 'deserve' the support of the people of London, and I know that Londoners have more guile and cynicism than to rally round some tuppeny-ha'penny illusionist who's freely put himself in a box for 6 weeks in order to earn x-times more money than most British people see in a lifetime.
Having said that, for five million, I'm prepared to look like prat in any any city you care to mention. In fact, I'll go one better and do it naked.

I went to see Blaine on Saturday (6th sep) and people had been chipping golf balls and throwing eggs.
Any how i heard rumor that he has glucose in the water to give him energy and stop his vital organs from eating themselves (apparently this can happen). I also heard, and i really am not too sure how credible this is, that perspex like that of the box can be, if coated with some special residue, used to project some sort of hologram. Considering Blaine is an illusionist not a 'hardman' this may be true but tell me what you think.

Unfortunatly for Blaine there are two lights on in the box all night for spectators to stare at his sleeping body huddled under a quilt!! and there are people there all night i now some guys who have gone on a pub crawl tonight just to end up there to abuse him!!

Remember that it's being filmed and aired LIVE 24/7 inside the box, you can see everything that goes on within the box. It's not unheard of for someone to starve for this many days (in history). I don't think there's any mystery to this trick.

What is David Blaine up to? Frankly who cares? If he wants to lock himself up in a clear plastic box and endanger his own life... that's up to him.

I just had to add my tuppence worth to this thread.
I don't think Blaine's doing anything really special, regardless of whether he gets food or not. I've done a bit of research and the longest anybody's been without food on record is 385 days, a prisoner on hunger strike at Wakefield Prison. Also he has eaten a shedload of food beforehand.
I live in Manchester but would love to be in London to harrass Blaine, purely for fun. I don't usually take pleasure in pissing people off but in his case I'll make an exception. Here's a couple of letters from the 11th Sept issue of the Metro free newspaper:
"I don't think it's a case of Londoners hating David Blaine. Instead of marvelling at his quasi-messianic posturing like the Americans do, we look at him in a plastic box and think: 'I bet I could hit that with a 9 iron.' For the next 40-odd days in London, there's a new sport - Blaine baiting!"
So far, so what? Well, I loved this one:
"If anyone wishes to join me in throwing sausages at David Blaine on September 20, I extend a warm welcome. Any sign of food will break his meditation and speed his metabolism, which in turn will set about the important process of him digesting his own body. If anyone wishes to join me: 5pm, September 20, beneath the boxl Bring a sausage - the David Blaine will be provided."
What I would personally love to do is get hold of some sort of sniper rifle and, whilst he meditates/sleeps, shoot out a corner of the box. The noise will wake the geezer up, and when he sees the bullet and the broken glass he will soon need the nappies he took in with him. Hopefully his nerves would be shot to hell and he could never rest for fear of being shot dead!
