A chef has baked what he claims is the world's most expensive steak and mushroom pie, costing diners more than £1,000 a slice.
About £500 of beef, Chinese mushrooms worth more than £2,000 and truffles have replaced traditional ingredients.

Its sauce is fortified by 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild wine costing £4,000 and the crust is topped with gold leaf. The recipe was prepared by Spencer Burge, head chef at the Fence Gate Inn in Burnley, Lancashire.

The pie cuts into eight slices, with a total cost of £8,195.

The recipe includes two bottles of 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild red wine costing more than £4,000. The pie is topped with gold leaf.

Kevin Berkins, who owns the Fence Gate Inn, said: "It started as a bit of silliness and quickly got out of control," he said.

"It's a very sophisticated pie. It's like anything else, if you drive a Rolls-Royce, you know you are driving something prestigious."

"Not everyone's going to order it but it's good for a special occasion if someone wants to be part of a real eating experience."

I know. It's the texture that gets me. All rubbery. Ugh.

Truffles...yum....sounds like pie of heaven. Not sure what a gold leaf is though. Allow me to "GOOGLE IT!"

It's real gold, beaten into incredibly thin sheets, is a special occasion decoration in Indian cooking. Used with restraint it can be rather elegant, but just a touch will do. It is mainly used on the handmade sweets which are a feature of classic Indian festive food. See also SILVER LEAF.

There is a restaraunt in London serving Pitza's at the same price with truffles on top, I watched the chef make them on TV. ordinary pitza base with shavings of truffles on top. He sais that its one of their best seller's at the moment. Some people have more money than sense.

What kind of an idiot eats gold, unless they plan to fish it out of the Loo later that night!

Why not just buy a hundred hamburgers and give them out on the street? That would do more to show how wealthy you are and, who knows, you might even screw up and do a little good.

P.S. I fricken LOVE mushrooms! I'll eat them raw without the sause!

I think I `ll just stick to my jesters pies or 40&20 pies as they taste good enough for me without having to spend an arm and a leg!
