Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - Fox gives the Emmy-award winning "Arrested Development" the axe.
Officially, Arrested, which just returned to Monday nights following a monthlong vacation for the baseball playoffs, had its order cut from the usual 22 episodes, down to 13. Eight installments have already been shot, meaning the company has five more episodes left before the final curtain.
"Everyone is pretty upbeat about it, actually," Bateman tells E! Online. "The last thing we wanted to happen was to overstay our welcome and tarnish the experience and prestige of the show."
Bateman says it would be a "complete shock" if Arrested were to be asked back for the 2006-07 season, as its chronically low ratings have gotten lower. From the start, the show has averaged just 4.2 million viewers.
Arrested Development premiered on Nov. 2, 2003 and has taken home six Emmys to date.
