Driver survives crash that splits car
Wednesday Nov 16 08:41 AEST

Police in Melbourne were stunned to discover that a man survived a crash that split his car in two.

Senior Constable Wayne Wilson said half of the car caught fire while the other half, carrying the driver, kept moving.

The man, aged in his 20s, was driving on Western Ave at Tullamarine, in Melbourne's northwest, about 2am (AEDT) when his car ran off the road and hit a tree.

"The engine section of the car stayed with the tree and caught fire while the other section of the car travelled about another 20 metres, ending up near a factory wall," Snr Const Wilson said.

"First police units to the scene were surprised the man survived the crash at all."

He said friends picked up the driver and took him to a house in Keilor Downs before calling an ambulance.

The driver was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital for treatment for head injuries.

"Police will interview the driver ... at a later stage," Snr Const Wilson said.

Either luck or what is known in the trade as a cut and shunt (Two halves of different cars welded together), it can happen.

Well that would have taken up about a lifetimes worth of luck there!
