Full Version: "It's a near certainty that black holes don't

Nature is running a story about a physicist who claims that black holes do not exist. George Chapline, of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, says that he believes the collapse of stars does not lead to black holes. Instead, the space time contained within the star becomes filled with dark energy, which causes intruiging gravitational effects.

QUOTE
"If the dark-energy star is big enough, Chapline predicts, any electrons bounced out will have been converted to positrons, which then annihilate other electrons in a burst of high-energy radiation. Chapline says that this could explain the radiation observed from the centre of our galaxy, previously interpreted as the signature of a huge black hole."

Interesting, if it's true it means we will be able to study dark energy, providing we get close to one, that is. yes.gif

what would the difference be between a black hole and a dark energy hole, it sounds pretty similar besides the name

Well it is believed that there is a tear in space time at the center of a black hole. I've actually read how a hole can be mended in Superstring Theory

Black hole is a a space time reqion may be very small with gravitation pull so high that even light cannot escape it. Black hole is created when star collapses inside as they burn out of fuel.

Dark energy on the other hand is hypothetical form of enegy. Dark energy is used to explain Space time covering most of the universe and accelarating its expansion.

This is my understanding upon material available on the subject. comment if you can coorect or add to this.

I agree with that theory, the concept that there exists an infinitly small nothingness which can suck in the universe is absurd.

I'm not exactly agreeing with that... It's pretty much saying that big power can't come from little things (Generalizing). My iPod & I are both counterexamples.
