Aug. 20, 2003 — A giant panda on loan from China gave birth Tuesday to a cub in the western U.S. city of San Diego, with a second furry arrival expected within hours, officials said.
Bai Yun, on a long-term loan to San Diego Zoo, gave birth to her first cub in nearly four years at 1:15 p.m. and was later expected to deliver the second of her twins, said zoo doctor Doug Myers.
The arrival of the last twin will boost the zoo's population of the rare beasts to five.
