Yes snakes did have legs...they were a group of lizards that evolved.

Don't really see the point in that. "Hey what are we doing with these stupid legs? We could be crawling round on our bellies instead."

That's exactly what the did. It's adaptation to environments. Evolution. Snakes are more adapted to their environments without legs than they were with legs.
