I am not sure if there is a thread already I just want peoples thoughts on whats going to be a very controversial movie.
Broke back link

I already know what happens in the end and i am very disappointed. crying.gif
But otherwise this looks to be a great movie and let me go out on a limb and predict

2006 oscar best picture
best director
and best cinematography

oh and just quickly for our US viewers is it true this movie has been banned in some states?
ABOTU
It hasn't been banned in Ohio. they just had a commercial for it at a movie I saw.
JennRose
Jumping jeebus, why in the world would this be banned? rolleyes.gif It looks beautiful and touching, and it's not like it's the first movie to deal with homosexuality. Geez...

People need to get a grip and get over some stuff. If you disagree with a movie, just don't go see it. Don't ruin it for the rest of us. disgust.gif

I think some people would be especially uncomfortable with it as they'd possibly view it as sullying the whole Western frontier ethos you have in the US... at least stupid people would see it that way.
Neo2005
Well aparently there is a pretty hardcore gay sex scene in it.
So i'm not surpirsed it's already banned.
amybutts
I have not heard of it being banned anywhere in the U.S. and the love scene can't be too "hard-core" as it is only rated R, which I am assuming is because of the type of sexual content. If it was two straight people having sexual scenes, it would probably border on PG-13.
Neo2005
Well from what i've heard it's supposed to be pretty rough.
snuffypuffer
Umm, you know they got the idea for this film from a South Park episode, don't you? The one where the independent film festival comes to town, and Cartman says most of the movies are probably gonna be about gay cowboys eating pudding, and that's exactly what happens? Somebody saw that episode and was like, there's an Oscar waiting in that. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a love sequence where Jake Gyllenhaal is feeding Heath Ledger from a Jello-O chocolate pudding cup.

I'm just saying, the parallels are there....
Neo2005
How twisted would that be if the next oscar winner for best picture got the idea from south park!

this is sad, but true. in either case, its just people having sex. people need to grow up and get over it.

and yeah, id imagine it will end up banned SOMEWHERE, probably in the more conservative towns.
JennRose
laugh.gif I know the South Park you are talking about. That's hilarious. The movie's actually based on a short story by Annie Proulx. I bet the South Park episode was based on this, you know.

Yes, sadly it is probably true. But, banning it is just going to make people want to see it even more, and yes, there are a lot of people out there that need to grow up and stop dictating their moral beliefs.

On a funnier note (and I am probably dating myself here)remember when they banned Footloose in certain parts of Utah! Hahahahaha... OMG.... now THAT was about as harmless of a movie as they come! All that did was give it more publicity than any paid advertising could have!
ICONvsICON
I haven't heard about the movie being banned in some American states either. If so, probably the midwest, I'm sure. Which is stupid because the movie is about being in love. I'm not sure about both characters, but I'm quite certain that one of the characters is not gay. And that's the point of the story... two guys who deeply and passionately love each other despite obstacles and BS.
Mr Ed
Me and Nick Fury were wondering if the two puns were intended.

Jenn, I will have to see this movie just to see if there is a scene where they're eating pudding. If there is, I will hurt myself with laughter, and probably get kicked out of the theatre. laugh.gif

How do you know the short story wasn't inspired by the South Park episode? tongue.gif
ICONvsICON
I just read the short story, which was pretty damn good. Should be interesting to see how they managed to produce a full-length feature film based on a fifty-three page book.

Unfortunately, I am not home in NYC at the moment, and I'm pretty sure that the film opens in NYC and L.A. on the 9th. Not sure about nationally.

Someone post if you see it this weekend.

Thanks.
jesspy
I would love to see peoples reviews of this movie.
Did you know Russell Crow was in a gay flick?
PadawanOsswe
a gay cowboy movie? huh.gif LMAO laugh.gif

I think this will ruin both ledger and gyllenhall's carreers. hmm.gif

Well appaerntly there alredy is oscar buzz around this movie people think that
Jake is up for best supporting actor
Heath up for lead actor

Who knows I would like to see the movie just to see something different.
PadawanOsswe
they say there is oscar buzz for every film that comes out. besides, if the writers were REALLY smart, they would have made it 2 secretly gay women! every man in the world would go see that! laugh.gif
__Kratos__
This movie banned rumor started... here on UM. It's not real...

Don't believe me? I just did a google search... "Brokeback Mountain banned"

Screen Shot Proof

UM is the only site... tongue.gif

So it's a gay movie... it's not like they are forcing people to watch the movie. I don't see myself going to it, but I'm sure others will see it.

LOL true so true. laugh.gif
Mr. Fahrenheit
I think this movie looks really good. Ang Lee is the director, it has like a 99% chance of being good. I don't see why everybody always stays far away from anything even implying Male-male relationships. Ugh. Society=non accepting.
Mr Ed
Well I don't know about society, but I am staying away from it because I am not a huge fan of romantic dramas etc anyway, and especially ones between two guys where there is little to no chance of any of the good kind of leg being shown.

its not because society in unaccepting. its because its an extremely odd mixture of genre's

I mean COME ON! a gay romantic drama cowboy film? laugh.gif
Mr. Fahrenheit
From what I hear, though, it blends very well.
PadawanOsswe
it may. but its still funny.well i'm off to write a Sci-Fi about 2 lesbian Jedi
Mr. Fahrenheit
Don't forget the showtunes.
cazorp50
Well, there is another South Park coincidence that I thought about. Remember when all the men and boys became metrosexual because of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy? It's the damn crab people all over again!

The short story came before the South Park episode grin2.gif There is no pudding in it. Anyway, what is the coincedence in that, cazorp? I don't see one at all

I was wondering...

is the name "Broken Back Mountain" in itself an insinuation to how physicaly demanding homosexual sex may be ??? its just such a curious name ..... blink.gif

w00t.gif that is the quote of the day, right there. yes.gif

Actually, I think it's in reference to the setting of the film.
rose_ashes
i am a heterosexual female, but i do believe that it is everyone's right to love who they want to love. i don't think it is fair for society to impose boundaries on one mature adult's love for another. if we were to twist this around and pretend for a second that heterosexual relationships were the ones looked down upon by society, how would that affect those of you who are heterosexual? it would hurt, i would imagine, and it would create an inner sense of shame and self-loathing. i suppose that's how homosexual people feel. i have a homosexual friend, and he struggles with more than most people could imagine. i truly feel for those who are not able to be with the ones they love because of society's views.

brokeback mountain looks to be a very profound and real movie. i have a feeling that it will change many views on homosexuality and give those struggling with the issue a sense of comfort in knowing that they are definitely not alone. not to mention the soundtrack and scenery are beautiful. i look forward to seeing this movie, provided my parents will allow it. (they aren't quite as... open-minded as i am.)

and props to heath and jake for taking on roles that most actors avoid like the plague. i would hope they'd be well rewarded for their bravery, perhaps with an oscar?

maybe, but it is ironic that they have sex at a place called Brokeback Mountain. laugh.gif

LOL on the radio they were calling the movie Bare Back mountain It was also on the radio where i heard the rumour it was being banned.
Mr. Fahrenheit
I would really hope this movie wouldn't be banned. It's a lot less explicit than a lot of movies that don't even get talked about being banned. But, again, there is no evidence that it has been banned anywhere.

Utah Theater Cancels 'Brokeback Mountain'

SALT LAKE CITY - A movie theater owned by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller abruptly changed its screening plans and decided not to show the film "Brokeback Mountain." The film, an R-rated Western gay romance story, was supposed to open Friday at the Megaplex at Jordan Commons in Sandy, a suburb of Salt Lake City. Instead it was pulled from the schedule.

A message posted at the ticket window read: "There has been a change in booking and we will not be showing 'Brokeback Mountain.' We apologize for any inconvenience."

Cal Gunderson, manager of the Jordan Commons Megaplex, declined to comment.

The film, starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, is about two cowboys who discover feelings for one another. The two eventually marry women but rekindle their relationship over the years.

The movie's distributor, Focus Features, said that hours before opening, the theater management "reneged on their licensing agreement," and refused to open the film.

Gayle Ruzicka, president of the conservative Utah Eagle Forum, said not showing the film set an example for the people of Utah.

"I just think (pulling the show) tells the young people especially that maybe there is something wrong with this show," she said.

Mike Thompson, executive director of the gay rights advocacy group Equality Utah, called it disappointing.

"It's just a shame that such a beautiful and award-winning film with so much buzz about it is not being made available to a broad Utah audience because of personal bias," he said.

No doubt it was the whining Mormons that had a hand in this. rolleyes.gif

*Sighs* I was hoping something like this wouldn't happen. But hey, it's Utah, somewhere you would expect this to happen (but still hope it doesn't) Why does this thread seem to drop 2 pages within like 10 minutes? It's a good movie, I think everyone should see this especially people like Mr. Swatsika ermm Ruzicka....
What time are the golden globes on (what channel, too)?

I dont think people make fun of the film because its a gay movie, but rather because its a gay cowboy movie. tongue.gif

I'll pass. There is something I like... freedom of expression/speech and freedom not to listen.

I don't care it's out there, just I don't think I'd enjoy a romance in the first place and with 2 guys... doesn't line up the stars for me to watch.
PadawanOsswe
yeah, if this flick starred Kiera Knightly and Natelie Portman about 2 lesbian cow girls........then I might be interested. devil.gif

I knew that, typo though. Switched two letters. Doh! Anyway, I'm not saying everyone wants to see it, LOTS of people don't. It's just when people are squeamish about 'romances between two guys' or think they are wrong, it changes the way people think about it. It's a beautiful film.

You mean Natalie Portman and Keira Knightly, right? tongue.gif Since you're so big on spelling.

Can't say I'd miss that movie though...
