The best games I ever played were/are Monkey Island (and it's sequals). Not very realistic (putting monkey's and ladders in your pocket for safe keeping....).
For me, a good game is a good game, regardless of how realistic or not it is.

^Indeed. I find that video-games are a great outlet or form of escapism from the real world so it being realistic isn`t that much of a major issue for me most of the time.

Monkey Island? Really? Man, I love those games!! Definitely among my fav

"Look, a three-headed monkey!"

Anyways, as long as a game is good it doesn't matter if it is realistic or not. We Love Katamari is a good example of this

the game must be fun above all, foir some people unrealisctic games cant be fun. as for me i like unrealistic games more (thats why i deleted brothers in arms after 15 minutes of gameplay ), some realistic games are pretty good, but mainly i find the unrealistic ones the best

Personally, I prefer simulators and realistic FPSs. I also like unrealistic ones if theres some other strong features, but on some games that attempt to be realistic, they fail horribly and have no other features strong enough to make me want to play.

Bah, BiA was horribly unrealistic. I deleted it after my first firefight. Pfft, aiming at a german 5 meters away, perfectly aligned to hit him, and the bullet misses

BIA was awful and it was so over hyped. My jaw dropped when I saw the Germans shooting off the Kar 98 like a Garand. There was no cocking delay at all.

The sequel (which should have been an expansion honestly) is slightly better... They changed the inaccuracy problem that bothered so many people... but now the weapons sway way too much. Although they should fix that too, I'd rather the weapons sway too much, so that I can anticipate when the weapon is going to be on target, than have the weapon on target and the bullets fly all around it without my control. It still shares many of its predecessors problems though. You still have to hit the enemy multiple times before killing him, the enemy is still blind to some flanking (less than in the original, but still present), you cant climb ladders or jump over a 2 foot ledge, and worst of all, theres no prone.

I don't think it matters if a game is realistic or unrealistic. I chose Unrealistic, only because I tend to like them better, but there are plenty of great realistic games out there. But videogames are used to escape reality and do something you could never do, so why not play some sci-fi adventure or something.

I like both, but I don't understand how some people drool over realistic grahpics and totally dismiss anything that is unrealistic. I mean Wind Waker was very cartoony, but some parts (especially boss battles) were downright beautiful.

Or Shadow of the Colossus. What's so realistic about fighting +100 ft tall monsters? And the game is well... you know how good it is

Some of the best games I've played were unrealistic like Discworld 1&2 Eric Idle as the voice of Rincewind is hillarious.

it all depends on what type of game your playing.
if its a sci-fi game, its gonna be "unrealistic"
if its a historical or modern war game, realistic would be my preference.

Realistic as in 'Modern world', or Realistic as in 'According to Physics'?
Cause there are two types to me. I always love it when I have fun either realistic or unrealistic in creativeness, sci-fi, it all can do well. But when it doesn't apply to Physics and its that unrealistic, then it would be a crappy game. Like if I shoot the wall and there are no trace of damage what so ever, than I wouldn't like that game very much.

hmmm
if you are playing say i dunno battle field two and everything is supose to based on real world thing then yeah it should be realistic that's the point in have real world weapons and cars
bu if you play unreal tornament you wouldn't expect it to be real, but atleast on unreal where you aim your bullets go so accuracy counts unlike battle field where when you aim dead on and fire a whole magazine but they don't freaking die and they walk up and get a freaking head shot!!! that's do unreal...

Are we talking about realism as in art style, or as in what can be done in a game?

I second that. Just like how graphics don't really matter as long as it's reasonable.. of course that is just my opinion. I have a few SNES games that I'd choose over any ps2 games any day.

Happens the same with me. Right now I'm having a lot of fun with the old Lucas Arts games -Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Sam n Max, Indiana Jones, Full Throttle, you name it, I've got it- and despite they've got dated graphics are much better than many games I've seen this year

BTW, if anyone is interested in those games, there's a torrent that has got them all. And to run them, use ScummVM. Great program!
