Maybe 3 or 4 times a year or so I wake up in the morning and notice scratches on my neck or upper torso, usually 3 or 4 or 5 parallel scratches. Now these are quite deep and I am at at loss to their origin. I've tried to scratch myself with my fingernails but can not duplicate scratches. What's even weider is that I know of others who experience the same phenom. One friend says it is the Old Hag that comes at night. I am starting to believe he may be right. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

Now and again I wake up with the odd scratch as well which is nothing unusual but what you describe sounds much more severe. Are you sure you or your partner couldn't have done it whilst having a bad dream or something? I have heard of weird scratches appearing on people who have been experiencing paranormal disturbance but I think it is quite rare. Don't freak yourself out about it until you can be sure it's not unconciously self inflicted.

I sleep alone. Again I deliberately have scratched myself but can't duplicate marks. Seems marks made by sharp object, yet I don't wake up. Mighty strange

i've had the same problem for years, sometimes they show up in places i can't even reach on my back, one time i was dreaming i was being chased across the top of a building, just before i jumped whatever was chasing me took a swipe at me, i woke up before i hit the ground (as always) and found three long scratches down my spine, mabey their related to your dreams, then again mabey not.

Similar things used to happen in my teens.

Mine were up my arms and back. Not really sure how they happened, but they were most likely something off my cat who lives outside and likes to sleep on my bed during the day...some kind of tiny insect irritating my skin while I slept, causing me to scratch. Or my brothers played another prank on me...

Its probably something completely explainable.

We unconsiounsly scratch ourselves in our sleep - it's totally natural. Even if it is severely deep, it's still possible you could have rubbed up against something sharp, or just kept scratching the same spot until it became really deep. I use to wake up with scratches a lot when I was ten or so, but that's because I know I'm a pretty violent sleeper original.gif.
