I was just wondering what you guys think will cause the apocalypse. Please try to back up any info you can with actual scientific, religious, or mythical evidence if you can. Also, I am very interested in new theories, so if you have an original apocalyptical theory, please share.

Well, it has been predicted that on average, every 1.1 billion years, there is an apocaliptical event that kills all life on earth (at least, all life on the surface) and we are already over due for one of those. Scientists have predicted that the sun will explode in 4,500,000,000 years, so I have to say, something is bound to happen before that time.

well we could get hit by an asteroid, smash our ozone, nuclear fallout, a gmma ray could flare in our galaxy and resulting radiation will kill us, a black hole could be slowly but surely be draging us into it, a star near by may explode into a blackhole or implode i should say, theres one every 80 years or something we could go into that. Really theres hundreds of ways, none however are religious for the simply reason its all a load of bollocks.

scientists create a quantum irregularity and a giant portion of earth is blasted away with such force that earth is torn from its axis. the survivors get to watch as the sun drifts further and further away from view and the atmosphere condenses into an icey tomb.

Rest assured that, while there may be some global catastrophie that wipes out all humankind, the earth will not end. The earth will not end until all trace of humans as been completely obliterated from the universe, billions and billions of years from now.
PLO was pretty close to the reason the world would end. Infact though it's reversed. The sun, as it gets older, does not shrink it expands. Eventually, some time down the road, our sun will have expanded so much the earth will be nothing more than a big ball of molten rock floating in space.

I think all of the humans will be extinct before the actual planet ends, that will happen in a few billion years when the sun grows to sevreal hundreds of times it's normal size just before it goes supernova, planet is dissolved in the process...

Mars is so gonna become the new earth when the world ends. But I was into mars before it got popular, so yeah.

This type of thread has already been done before, almost word-for-word. Oh, well:

The world will end in ice. Earth is simply too far away to be destroyed by the sun when it becomes a Red Giant (although, for a couple dozen million years, its surface WILL probably be near melting), and the sun is too small to supernova. That means that after the Red Giant phase, the Sun will become a white dwarf, and slowly cool down to inertness. Along with our planet.

Hopefully not during my lifetime will there be any 'world ending' dealy stuff.

I hate to be pessimistic, but when you hear news about all the starving children all over the world, and then watch people from the first world countries stuff their faces and throw out mounds of perfectly good food, I can't help but be pi**ed off!
Not to mention the green house gases that in 30 years will cause tremendous changes in our climate, plunging the northern hemisphere into very cold winters and super hot summers. And of course, World War 3.....
So, in other words, I don't believe that we are going to be able to get out of this downward spiral that we have taken.

I would prefer an object from space hitting the earth with enough force at the exact moment to propel it in the exact direction that it begins to be pulled in my Jupiters gravitational pull and when it enters Jupiter's atmosphere it will be torn apart and deconstructed by Tidal Forces.

Unlike many that have posted so far, I see it from a Theological point of view. The world will end just as it is stated in a REVELATION TO JOHN.

Correction to what someone said in one of the post. The Sun will not explode in nova or supernova. Sun in main sequences star burning its hydrogen slowly. As a main sequence star the Sun will end up has brown dwarf and not a black hole (usual result of a supernova).

We're doing ourselves in. Technology is moving so fast, things will get smarter. Don't wanna bring up the whole "Terminator" type of thing too much... haha... but I think machines will get smarter, computers etc... Hell, in Japan they are already building these really smart robots that even look like people. Has anyone seen that chick robot they made... she looks pretty damn real. They said in another couple years she will be able to walk on her own. Anyway, ya... even our eating habits will bring us down. There's too much junk food. This stuff messed up our insides. Native people long ago were never sick. But times change and all this processed foods we take in have seriously messed up our biological make up. I think people have to go back to nature to survive. Survive anything. There's so much there to live on... shelter, food. Its all there you just gotta be smart about it and use your head. Most people will panick if stuck in the bush, I bet you that much. K, back to that technology sh**... everything is going to be so easy eventually, that when the crap hits the fan, no one will know how to fight back or do whatever. (but go to the trees and bushes and lakes, you'll be fine)I'm not clear on how it will all end. But its going to mankinds own doing though. Size isn't the underlying factor which determined if the a star will be a main sequence star or not but rather the core temperature (kelvin). Look at this H-R diagram. Look at which stars become novas, supernovas, dwarfs etc.

The size play major factor to the magnitude of the explosion since during a supernoa, the star implode (colapse under the weight of the star).

It will, I'm surprised nobody has mention global warming, either mass overheating, causing slow starvation, mass freezage, causing, well, mass coldness and a horrible death by cooling lol, or a big ass flood and stuff lie, tidal waves- the whole deal, its fairly obvious it will happen in my lifetime, your lifetime and probably everyone on here's lifetime. By an uncalculated coincidence people will flush their toilets at the same moment in time and space resulting in massive flooding and immeasurable tsunamis of tidal proportions. The immense power of so much water going down the drains at the same time will cause pressure vortexes that will result in tornadoes and hurricanes like never seen in the history of mankind. Sucking all the fresh oxygen from the surface of the planet and replacing it with noxious methane. I am fairly confident that if there is to be an "Apocalypse"* by definition, it will occur when God decides He has had enough of us. The word "Apocalypse" is a term specifically related to theology.



However, though you asked how the Apocalypse would occur, many comments seem to answer different questions, which is how will humanity end or how will the Earth end?

As for humanity, I believe that humans will cease to exist long before the Earth is consumed by an expanding Sun. And, I apologize in advance if this sounds a little sadistic, but if humanity is destined for extinction anyways, I personally hope it's by the same means that off-ed the dinosaurs; by asteroid. And, I hope I see it coming. OH MAN! Wouldn't that be a sight to see!?

In most religions, they seem to all concur that we are gods children.

They take it metaphorically.. and so do most of you.

We are god's children, not the christian gods, or the greek gods, but the god that created you. What does it matter who they are or what they intend to do to your planet? They presented you with plenty of physical interaction capabilities to live a life, so do it.

If you believe the world is going to end, buy some heavy clothes, to protect you from freezing if you rely on natural gas and it becomes unavailable. Stock up on diesel and get a generator, buy a cheap laptop with a 56k modem and a huge emergency battery, so you can get on the net via phone... for communication. Buy one of those new wind up radios. Take this seriously, if you SERIOUSLY think the world is going to end in our lifetimes. Quick speculating on when its going to happen, how its going to happen, because when it comes down to it the only thing that matters is if you are PREPARED or not.

This is my first post... I don't have a name icon... and I don't know if I'll post anymore. The only reason I replies to this is because I am up late, about to go to bed and stumbled accross this discussion. I have had this discussion with many people... because I believe there is a small chance it will happen in my lifetime, the world civilization status will collapse in uncontrollable governmental breakoffs and collapse... or nuclear war, or alike.

But until then, if it happens (which i think most likely won't), I will live my life, enjoy my freedom of privacy and question all that stands uncertain... except for the end of the world, considering its utterly depressing.

A star the size of our sun will burn steadily for 10 billion years, then expand to a red giant, and finally collapse into a white dwarf about the size of Earth.

What an irony that super nova result in heavier elements such as Fe, Mn, Mg, Ni, Cd which are essential for formation of planets like Erath. Without the violent death of massive stars, planets like earth wouldn't exist.
