An earthquake the size of which "makes the whole earth ring" shook the South Island of New Zealand and was felt as far away as Sydney overnight.

New Zealand's Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences said the quake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale and was centred 70km west of Te Anau, at a depth of 20km. Geoscience Australia put it at 7.5.
