Full Version: What If?

Here is a scenerio for you all to ponder. I just started reading a book called The End Of Faith by Sam Harris. I came across a question he asks, If everyone on earth woke up tommorrow and couldn't remember anything, nothing at all. There are still computers and books but you couldn't read them because you can't remember how to read. You don't know what the concepts of god or religion are. Would you care? What knowledge would you want to reclaim first? Would you want to get reaquainted with the spoken or written word? Would you go about trying to get food and shelter first? Would you be trying to figure out how to survive and how to relate to your fellow man? "When in this process of reclaiming our humanity will it be important to know that jesus was born of a virgin? Or that he was resurrected?" How would you distinguish the truth of the bible from the truth of mythology if you didn't know any different?
This was very thought provoking to me, I was wondering what you guys think?

I would have thought that your religion and faith etc would be one of the last things that you would need to think about. Survival would be your first concern, then order and natural superiority would evolve and then eventualy reproduction.

Its possible that we would start to worship things that we dont understand, from there who knows?
Super Pancake
We'll be babies half us would be killed because we staved to death, and have no concept of eating etc. imagine somebody found a match and started playing with fires.

Anyway I guess survival would be first.
Super Pancake
O.k. thinking far too much into the question I believe we probably come to recognize the text left behind.

So after we get survival down, controlling fire and stuff. we are going to eventually ask ourselves were we come from?

We most likely repeat history again. Before we start worshiping ourselves we would worship the sun, moon, stars and mountains. Maybe we would look up to things like the Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower and etc. As language gets better we will start giving things symbols. Imagine the revelation when one of us walks in a kindergarten classroom. We would see the alphabets aligned perfectly on the blackboard. Now lets say we give each symbol(letter) a name, even better a sound. Imgaine the excitement when we find a kindergarten book, and see the symbol c-a-t is the symbol for the domesticated animal cat, probably named something else by that time if we did not eat all of them. laugh.gif

Eventually some genius will be able to learn read and speak a language, like lets say English. It won't be the same but it would be close enough. We might discover our past and most likely find like the cockroach it is Christianity.

Christianity will never die hahhahahahhahhahhahha devil.gif

You have been thinking about it original.gif

Now you mention it, I forgot about communication. That would possibly be one of the most difficult things that we would have to develop and assimilate into our new culture.

We would be literally starting from scratch, the cave man effect.

We would be so frightened, can you imageine it?
Yelekiah
That would be pretty frightening, and I can imagine that we'd spend a great amount of time observing things and not trusting one another. But when we see someone die or something "miraculous" that we cannot explain (because we forgot), we'll probably think it's supernatural and start to question if there is a Higher Power.

I am sure language would quickly be reinvented and people would soon be killing each other.

It's been said, but the first order of business would be survival.....

Then if the inquisitive of us turn on a cd player, ooh what's this tray thingy popping out (what's a tray come to think of it). This round thingy here looks like it might fit in there...... then *BOOM* music starts to play.

A magician. A witch. Or even bow down and worship the stereo.

It would be like starting from scratch. If we got to the level where we could read and we picked up a Bible, or the Koran, or the Watchtower Magazine, or the Book of Mormon or the Bagavadghita or..... whatever, I think the effect would be the same as it is today. Some would believe what they read to be true. Other's would be skeptical.

I would say we would all die in days. Would we retain our natural instincts like eating or mating? If not, then there would be no chance of surviving because we would not know how to eat as well...And not to mention the ppl in NY City or something like that, with no trees with fruits around...hmm...this makes me think, how did the first cell feed itself to be strong to separate into two cells and etc etc etc homo sapiens...(I suck at biology so I am assuming a cell needs to feed itself haha ) grin2.gif

umm...there is an anime...."The Wind of amnesi" IIRC, that had the same argument. Only a guy, a misterios women and a robot are the only ones in the planets whit memories of civilization. Everyone else die or get into monkey level.

a person would first think to get food, water, and shelter. Then they would evolve into a better species overtime- learning to read and talk. Then they would then know of God again.

How do you think the people before were surviving and stuff?

They just evolved and adapted to their surroundings.
