I'm sure there was some olde English eccentric from years ago who drank from a human skull and used a vertebra as a saltcellar.
When the Duke of Monmouth had his head chopped of - a job that was so badly performed a knife was required to completely sever it - it was immediately sown back on for a portrait.

The script on the base is Bonsai in katakana. They didn't use kanji (the characters) because they refer specifically to the tree version.
