Panthera leo atrox

Basic infoI think it is just a slightly abnormal cougar, unusually colored and thin compared to most, but not as unusual for the population its found in.

I put down that it is a real cryptid, because if an animal comes in a color or pattern that isn't well documented and scientists don't admit to, it's still an animal that's is unknown.

Yes I agree, we need a colored picture. But I do believe it exists. There are so many species out there that we haven't even come close to finding.

I think it is possible, there are creatures or some sorts of animals that have not been discovered yet. So i voted yes.

I voted that it was a new species, because to me it seems perfectly reasonable; In mountains, especially these ones which I'm guessing are forested, there's going to be all sorts of new critters hiding.

Here is a color version of the photograph. Based on the genetics tests pointing to cougar as the species, and the extreme variation of cougars, I don't think it needs to be considered a new species. Except for maybe the leopard, the cougar is the most widely distributed wild cat in the world, with an unusual amount of variation depending on subspecies and habitat. The cougars from this part of Mexico may be more reddish colored and have shorter fur then the ones most people are used to seeing because of their desert habitat.

I voted a new species because like the "king cheetah" the cougars will evolve too.

The king cheetah is a mutation of the cheetah's fur, not a different species. They can be born in litters with normal cheetahs.

The back part of the cat almost has a kangaroo feel, it's hind legs and tail.
vanax
Dec 27 2005, 06:32 AM
tia i see what you mean the hind legs see to be more muscular and a little longer then the front ones but the front paws seem a little large for it to be a kangroo don't you think?? i've never seen one up close i don't know *blush* just a thought

It looks like a puma

I don't mean it's a kangaroo, I'm not that blind yet.
The back section, if that was all you saw especially in the b&w shot you'd think kangaroo.

Panthera, I have a question. Panthera leo is the scientific name for a lion, what is "atox"?
Panthera leo atrox

Panthera leo atrox is a subspecies of Panthera leo. It is the extinct giant North American lion.

I voted, other, but please, don't burn me at any stakes yet. lol. the few photo's I've seen, which were honestly few and far between, showed very little which I could determine to be anything too extraordinarily different from a runover puma. yet the fact that I was uncertain makes me think that there could be a possibility of it being something else, hence my complete fence sitter answer. lol

Probably not, unless you want to broaden the definition of cryptozoology to include more then just discovering new species.

In Dr. Karl Shuker's book 'The Lost Ark,' it says that an onza was shot in Mexico. The corpse was examined and found to be a new species, but sadly vanished shortly afterwards.
