Seriously, I think this has got to be the lowest and laziest form of communication on the planet.
Translated into moron, I mean Leetspeak:
$rsly,,i 7nk this has gt 2b t3h lwst & layZest f0rm 0f c0m 0n teh pln3t.!one
Its even more irritating when they abbreviate words like ABBREVIATE!
A few questions:
Is it really so tough to type out two or three extra words to complete your sentence?
I've heard that this is actually a "code" language so your parents can't understand your immature little babblings...do you really think your parents are that stupid?
Argh!
Does anyone over the age of twelve or with an IQ over 48 use this silly little language?
/end rant
PS. I had an argument with a leetspeaking lackwit earlier...got me a little miffed, first that I let him get to me and second because I could barely understand his insults.

I absolutely hate people who talk like that. What retard came up with this?! It's primary use is for little kids, or older people who act like little kids, to pretend to be "cool" and annoy the hell out of other people. Why do people think it's funny or cool to type like that? It's highly unecessary to do so. No point at all. Is it really that hard to type like someone who has at least half a brain? I tend to avoid talking to people to type like that.

Writing in Leet speak is against the rules for all the aforementioned reasons. (it sounds uneducated and is hard to read, especially for those where English might not be their first language.) If you see posters writing in leet, please use the report function so we can sort it out.

* that English to a 12 - year-old AOLer is brilliant by the way!

To me, it seems far more complicated than normal typing, it's really sad and I don't like it. Surely it must take more time than normal to get all those weird characters?

You know a lot of you really do need to get your facts straight before you start attacking people.

1337 Speak was a cutural phenomenon through which people spoke in a code for various reasons - Avoiding punishment for talking about illegal software, ect. It established a hierarchy on online games that still exsists today.
There are two types of leet speak. 12 year old leet speak;
OMG dude 1 r s0 c00l.
And 1337 Speak;
7[-]15 15 7[-]3 I23@L 1337 5p3@k.
Do not confuse them.
And although leet speak is against the rules of this forum, I'm sure there are people here who use it elsewhere but respect the sites rules and refrain from using it here - Like myself.
Therefore I'm sure you can discuss 'leet speak' without directly insulting those who use it, no?

^ Your argument is they can diss on the 12 year old hybrid of 1337 but not diss 1337 it's self because it's a code that was made for the sole purpose to break the law?

Sure it has extended to common talk as well but yes, as you said it's first purpose it to break the law. I've seen it around some of the sites I've surf so I can't really diss them as I benefict from them.

I was going to post this. but yeah, the 12 year old 'leet' seems more like text (txt) message speech.
I learnt the 1337 speak, used it for a while till I got bored... and used actual grammer

liek lawl. wtf dud, dont b dis'n teh leet.
itz teh awsm roxorz.
I like to speak like that, while dealing with annoying people, by mocking them.
For example, one girl told me that a frog ate my intestines (bad insult, I know) so I wrote (to mock her)
"Z0MG liek i hat u nd i cna uz a thesorus lawl nd u hav a preehistoryc forg ni ur intestynz lawl"
------------
But yes, people who use that too often get on my nerves too

"I speak leet! That makes me cool! I am better than you! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
They can speak leet in their own little AOL world, but not in games. In games, CS, it drives me up the wall. It's like, "Holy crap! I dont have time to decipher what ever piece of crap code you just sent me loser! Let me just play the flippin game!

"
I admit I have a sticker that says "Im l33t! Just ask my mom if you dont believe me!" on the top of my laptop. But only because I got it for free. Besides the "No this isnt my boyfriends computer" one overshadows it
The only leet I use is Kitt3h, and inside joke.

My point is that theres a difference between what you're describing, the reality and its users. I use 1337 speak and you don't - That doesn't make me a sad 12 year old with an IQ of 48.

Leet and the relative IM langues that I see here drives me nuts to have to read that kind of junk. I understand that texting from a phone without a keyboard makes a person want to shorten words and make it easier, and I also understand that IM conversations are different, but when people post here in some kind of odd shorthand non-english language, it drives me nuts.
I don't mind as long as a person does their best to use good old fashioned english, leave the leetspeak in the forums for 14 year olds that don't mind that kind of stuff, but please don't us it here.

Walken is right. 1337 speak started when Crackers (AKA Hackers, but the correct term is Cracker) basically covered their tracks when talking about Warez by typing in a sort of ASCII code. Online PC gaming and cracking is obviously closely related, as crackers would often make illegal patches of games or what not, than go on the game and speak in 1337 where the 12-yr olds began to pick it up and say 'OMG IM SO H4X0RZ LOLOLZ!!!11one', and than there was like an influx of idiots using it. So in short, like Walken said, there are two people that use 1337 speak, true Crackers, and wannabee h4x0rZ. I dislike both, but what ever.

english apparently became uncool a while ago.
On the subject of text speak, there is a crisis facing the world, british mobile phone company dot mobile is translating great works of literature into text speak, its an abomination, I know that they are thus butchering the entire works of william shakespeare, lord of the flies by william golding, and dozens of other marvelous pieces of classical literature, they claim it is to give students a handy study aid, honestly, its just a travesty.
