Montreal film crew will make the rounds of the border area today as part of a documentary on whether there is a sea serpent in Lake Memphremagog. A crew from Diversus Productions will be in and around Newport City today, filming around the local shores of the international lake, where some believe a sea serpent called Memphre resides. The company will also host a town hall-type meeting at 7 tonight at the Haskell Opera House in Derby Line. The film company has already talked to Derby historian and journalist Scott Wheeler and to Newport City Mayor Richard Baraw, among others interested in the history and legend of a sea serpent here. The documentary is the latest in a series of news stories about Memphre this summer, from sightings to the controversy over one woman's claim to own the rights to the name and efforts to prevent others - including the Newport area chamber of commerce - from using Memphre as a local promotion in the way Magog, Quebec, does.
