Canada downs U.S. in world junior showdown
Canada earned a bye to the semifinals at the world junior hockey championship after skating to a 3-2 victory over the U.S. Saturday in Vancouver.
Kyle Chipchura scored into an empty net with 33 seconds left in regulation to lift the Canadians to the victory.
With the win Canada, the defending champions, finished in first place in Group A with a 4-0 record. The U.S fell to 2-1-1 but remains in second place.
Cam Barker and Dustin Boyd also scored for Canada, while Chris Bourque and Peter Mueller tallied for the Americans.
Canada has won 16 straight round-robin games – and ten straight overall – over the last two world junior tournaments.
In other Group A action Saturday, Switzerland plays Finland, while in Group B play Russia takes on the Czech Republic and Slovakia plays Sweden.
