A woman who went to hospital fearing she had eaten a dodgy kebab was stunned when she gave birth.

Helen Smitham from Distington, Cumbria, had no idea she was pregnant when she felt stomach pain.

Her mum took her to hospital - and 60 seconds later shocked Helen gave birth to a 4lb 11oz boy.

According to The Sun Helen said: "I had absolutely no idea. When I had stomach pains I thought it was the kebab. At the hospital there was no time for the doctors to see me before it all happened."

Deaton is in the premature baby unit at West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven.

Helen's boyfriend Mark Askew, 41, said: "She was at work until the Friday before Christmas and we'd gone out doing the normal things, like going for a drink, Christmas parties and socialising.

"When I got a call to say we had a baby boy it was amazing."

What on earth?

She was 9 months pregnant, and didn't think 'Hmm, I wonder what this bulge is.. '?

Then blamed it on a kebab?

She also didn't remember the unprotected sex?

This is plain stupid! tongue.gif

A 4 pound baby wouldn't make much of a bulge, especially if the woman is overweight to begin with. Hopefully her Christmas drinks didn't affect the poor thing.

60 second delivery, I bet she waited longer for the Kebab laugh.gif

Hope the kid's ok. Probably is though unless she's an out and out drunk. Still, not knowing she didn't get the chance to take the vitamins and such.

Was it due to unprotected sex or did contraception fail? (Abstinence doesn't fail, works 100% every time it's tried)

Can't imagine the boyfriends thoughts. Depends on the individual I guess. Seems fairly common, I hear stories like this alot that the mom didn't know she was pregnant.

4lb 11oz doesn't sound like a full term pregnancy to me.

When I fell pregnant with my first I didn't know for 3 months as I was still having periods. I went to the doctors with what I thought was a severe stomach bug and they did a pregnancy test to rule it out; although by six months it was definitely noticeable, my bump seemed to grow almost overnight LOL

I have heard this before, I once watched a tv programme where this woman was at a barbecue, complained of an upset stomach then later gave birth and she never knew she was pregnant. It can happen also depending on how the baby is laying in the womb, as I work with a woman who's 1st kid lay towards the back of her womb and she had her usual monthly cycles and of course she was overweight anyway so therefore she didn't realize till she was over 8 months gone.

That would be one hell of a surprise. blink.gif

What about the sickness and feeling the kid kick and such...?

Years ago my mom knew a woman who wanted a baby, but was told by her doctor that she couldn't have one. When she seemed to be pregnant she was excited at first, but the doctor told her he was sorry, but it wasn't a baby, but a tumor growing in her uterus. For months he gave her drugs to try to get rid of it but it just kept growing. Finally he scheduled her for surgery to remove it.

On the weekend before she was scheduled to go in for surgery she was at a party. There was an old country doctor there and he asked the hostess what that woman was doing out partying when she was so far along in her pregnancy. The hostess explained that, sadly, it wasn't a pregnancy but a tumor. The country doctor said, "hmmph! Looks like a baby to me." The mother overheard him and decided to seek a second opinion.

On the day she'd been scheduled to have surgery to remove her tumor she instead gave birth to a (fortunately!) healthy baby boy. grin2.gif

Omg Elfstone that's such a scary story - just goes to show that doctors can get it wrong...

Was this in the time before ultrasound by any chance?
Elfstone810
Yes, long before ultrasound. And it is scary isn't it? It's a miracle the stuff they were giving her to get rid of the "tumor" didn't hurt the baby!

My friend's mum thought she was only having one baby (my friend's twin) until she actually gave birth; my friend was so small she was hidden behind her brother the way he was lying. This was before ultrasound too.

I also heard of this happening before . . weird, but it does happen.
