My mother claims to have seen the mothman though she wasn't actually sure what it was but when she heard about it she started wanting to find out the facts the description of the mothman himself is what gets her, she says that what she seen as a child was black and jumped out of the trees and above her so fast that she wasn't really able to catch it she thinks maybe she can't remember it all because she was so afraid and children tend to block scary things out of their memory for the better of things, well we still aren't sure, but she has been reading up on the book, the one that the movie was loosely loosely based off of the book is all facts from the reporter that stuff in the movie was mostly made up and they barely used the facts, anyway I believe her and I still would like to find out what she saw on that day.

does anyone happen to think that it may actually exist, I do...
Aslan
God that was difficult to read. There are other punctuation marks available, you know, not just the trusty comma.

Anyway, with all due respect to your mother it sounds to me like she's extrapolating after the fact. You state that whatever she saw

so what makes her think it was the Mothman - beyond the fact that she read a book and watched a film with quite an intriguing protaganist. From your post there is no indication that the Mothman suddenly registered as the thing she actually saw, merely that the Mothman presented itself as an interesting possibility for something she half-saw.

I doubt that you'll ever find out what she saw on that day. Why not a bat, for example, or a large bird? Her memory of the event certainly seems to fall somewhat short of precise. But this Mothman theory really does seem to be clutching at (topical) straws.

What she saw as a child, was black and jumped out of the trees above her, so fast that she wasn't really able to catch it.

I punctuated the above quote, well in to something abit more readable anyway! wink2.gif

For a start you live in the United States, populated with lots of different kinds of animals, many of which possibly have black fur? Like said already, bats, large birds, anything like that.

Also as a child we also tend to imagine things a fair bit, and exaggerate things. Maybe what seemed like a "mothman" to her at the time, was actually something the size of a bat/large bird.

We don't know exactly how old she were back then, also, was she at an age where minds run riot?

Why was she where she was? Was it night time? Remember in the night, things that maybe even rainbow coloured, appear black in the night, with the lack of light and everything.

For one thing I appologize for my bad punctuation so tongue.gif
anyway for one thing what she saw was huge and fit the description of the true mothman, and another thing the mothman did take place in the united states around where she lived as a child.

read the book

Well, you could have told us the time it actually took place for starters, "When my mum was a child" doesn't really give us much indication.

I know what the mothman looks like though, I have seen pictures and so on.

I am glad you believe she saw the mothman all those years ago.

Me and Aslan were just pointing out, seeing as she did not see it clearly, or remember it properly, that it could be, in fact something else.

Hmm... well that was a VERY vague description. It was big and black.

Then you state that it fits the description of the Mothman... with a description as little as the one provided, we coul say a buttload of things fit the description of being big and black.

As it was said, kids tend to exagerate things in their minds and your mother said herself that she couldn't quite remember properly right?

Well anyway, we need more information:

1) Where did this all take place (location, country, state?)
2) How old was your mother at the time and what year would you say it was?
3) Can you give us a better description of not only the creature but exactly what happened?
4) Did anything bad happen afterward, as it is often seen before a tragety of some sort and is generally a bad omen.

These are just a few things that would help...

StrataAngel
well I'm sorry for my vague description another that she did tell me that if it was a bat then it was big enough to carry off a cow
StrataAngel
well this was supposed to go with the previous posts but the mothman took place in the late 60's my mothers sighting was in the early 70's the wind picked up and the dog started to bark, in the woods behind her school in Pennsylvania she is not saying that it is the mothman she is only saying that after she started to hear about the movie and the description and linked it with the logical.

What? Like Mothman? That flap started in 1967, I believe. A good long time before The WTC attack..

StrataAngel...Great post!.... totally fascinated with your story. If your mom saw something or said she did, I believe her. Has she said anymore about the incident?
Falco Rex
Again; doesn't anybody realize that they're directing comments and questions at a member who hasn't been here since December, 2003?
TaintedDoughnuts
i think it sounds more like a bird; most *official* mothman sightings didn't occur in Pennsylvania, but they were in Point Pleasant, West Virginia(located on the opposite side of Penn. and W.V.'s border). and, IMO, that's quite a distance for a mothman to travel. correct me if i'm wrong, but i dont believe i heard of any official reports of mothman jumping through trees, just chasing cars and kidnapping dogs and such original.gif. sorry StrataAngel, but it really doesnt sound like mothman no.gif
Marth
*walks back in sleepily* somehow after saying that comment i dreamt off the mothman as an entity, mind reader, its symbol being a clover and wherver you saw it people would die and somehow the knights of saint thomas killing my family.....Jesus I have weird dreams..........

i was out on a stroll at night because i was bored and i saw two hellish red eyes staring at me from in a wooded area.
then as i drew closer to the beast it spread itself out at full stretch and let out a shrill cry and flew away in a bright light
