UPN and the WB network are both struggling in U.S. brodcast operations, will now be merged into one new network aimed at young, ethnic viewers. The network will be called The CW, and formed by CBS corp. and Warner Bros. which will own half of what is expected to be the nations 5th network, officials said Tuesday. The CW, which debuts in fall, will brodcast 30 hours of programming a week, including shows like "Smallville," "Everybody Hates Chris," and "Beauty and the Geek."

"The CW will be able to do something truly remarkable:program already hit shows every single day of the week, programs that consistently rank No.1 or No.2 in their time slots in the most coverted young adult demographic," said Leslie Moonves, head of CBS. Meanwhile, Tribune brodcasting and CBS/UPN affiliates agreed to sign 10 year affiliation agreements with The CW. The combination of Tribune's 16 major market stations and the 12 CBS-owned UPN major market affiliates give The CW instant coverage in 48% of the country. Dawn Ostroff, the president of UPN, will be entertainment president of The CW

That kinda sucks. But as long as Smallville stays on, I'll be happy. original.gif

Yea, that does suck, but as long as they have the same things on, i'll be happy. thumbsup.gif

It does suck... they should just slay the WB, take the good shows from that station and weed out the stupid shows on UPN. When the WB first came to my area, it was awesome... had all sorts of great shows and now it is barely watchable.

Will the merge mean cutting out the re-runs of the Simpsons and South Park on UPN? hmm.gif

Well they will be merging the best of the WB with the best of the UPN.....

And I think is more for marketing value that they create a whole new CW channel....

I predict the network will do pretty good, I think it's a smart idea to merge the channels and I think it's a brilliant idea to create a whole new channel out of two old ones......

For marketing preferences alone it will have alot of hype surrounding it, and that is the kinda buzz you would need for this type thing...

Announcing they are combining 2 channels sorta seems like the company isn't doing to well.....

But announcing a whole new channel made out of 2 previous channels, sounds more refreshing and promising, which I do believe was the whole point....

What the hell kind of name is CW!!

Most of the shows from both channels will be on CW...I hope we get it, we don't have UPN or WB hmm.gif

A merger can be a refreshing start . . . hope it works out well for all viewers.

By all means make a new network, but get rid of 2 other networks in the process? blink.gif

It just seems pointless. sad.gif

It shouldn't. All of the UPN and WB networks will become independent(for example, UPN 13 in LA may be called KCOP-TV), so the shows in syndication will stay on.

CharmedFan3: I found out that the CW letters stand for. The C in CBS and the W in the WB. It was on the news, recently.

I found a logo for the CW, although they said it won't be the logo used at the launch.
I also found The CW at wikipedia. It has a list of affiliates, and what parts of the country it will be in.

Well, UPN Chicago(channel 50) just became independent. Now they call themselves Power 50. I was able to find the logo so that I can put it here

Well, it turns out that they designed a new logo for the launch of the network. It kind of looks like the CNN logo(owned by Time Warner, which will own the CW). It is kind of ugly, though.New CW logo
