If anyone has any pets that are a little unusal please tell me about them cuz I like listening to sh** like this & I wanted to find out if its unusual becuase I have a purebred black lab and he is 33" at his back in hieght. The vet dosnt even know why hes so big. mellow.gif

Used to be years ago labs were a lot lot bigger than they are today, but due to the way they're bred they got smaller and smaller.

I have a miniature shnauzer that thinks it a cat and I used to have a guinea pig that sounded like it wolf whistled.

Hey Rose, if you read the post more carefully you would see I listed a husky, which is NOT a reptile! Oh, but I did forget the peacock.

Peacock? Awesome! I have a crow :3 and a munchkin cat, every other animal I have is normal.

Other than a cat who begs like a dog, and one that cackles like a witch...

Nope, nothing wierd about my twin dragons.

(Both are named after Babylonian dragons and are nearly 20 pounds of muscle.)

I used to have a skunk but she was pet-napped. Her name was Reba and she was so cute....
annie_nigma
I have a horse, 3 dogs (one of which never barks but instead makes a weird "barrroooo" noise) and 3 cats. My little siamese cat has thumbs. He actually uses them to climb like a monkey. I'll have to get some pics!
Griffon
Peacocks.

We had three, but one died a month or so ago so now its two. The male likes to fan his feathers to the female this time of year. Tis' purdy.
capoeiranger
I'va got a carnivore freshwater fish...not sure what's the English name...in Indonesian it's called Ikan Gabus. Almost at the size of an adult's arm. Once tried to bite my uncle's finger off. I'll upload the pics of the fish next time I'm online...

Lol! Winking dog, cute.
MissMelsWell
I don't have any pets right now sad.gif

But, I love animals! I used to breed and raise parrots! At one point, I had an aviary of almost 200 parrots of various types. It's a lot of HARD work.

I also love Herps, and have kept snakes and lizards. I kept a Ball Python as well as an Australian Bearded dragon and a Jackson Chameleon (very difficult to care for).

My oddest pets?

A sugar glider.. very cool little dudes if you don't mind nocternal beasties that will keep you up half the night given half a chance. Luckily I can sleep through anything. They have a lot of personality and require some special care, but they do make pretty good little pets if you are a night owl.

I also briefly had a ... Prarie Dog. What a mistake that was. I'm good with animals, but that dude was WAY out of my league! He found a new home with a breeder.

I also had some hermit crabs. Never could figure out how to keep them alive for more than six months or so.

And last but not least... I had a Pacific Northwest cold salt water fish tank. Very very difficult to maintain.
Episteme
Those prarie dogs look so sweet! Several years ago our local pet store owner told me she wasn't going to be carrying them anymore because of the methods they used to catch them. Good to hear nowadays there are breeders. I think I'll be leaving the prarie dogs in the prarie and hopefully nobody ever dumps one in my lap!

We had an African Pygmy Hedgehog for about eight years and have had a Bearded Dragon Lizard for about four years. Both from kids who tired of them. Interesting and suprisingly friendly animals.

We also have a Yellow Lab pup and an outside (mostly) cat that isn't ours and a fish tank with fish that aren't ours. The dog is ours! grin2.gif

When I was young I had strange pets because I caught them.

I had lizards, toads, walking sticks, spiders, wind scorpions, well actually the wind scorpions were from last year, they kept showing up in my woodpile which was really strange because I was living far north at the time and they aren't supposed to be there. link to info and pic on wind scorpions

When I was 4 I had a little plastic swimming pool full of tadpoles that I caught out of the irrigation ditch running through our field. I can't believe my mother let me do that!

I also caught and kept a few water dogs, also known as mud puppies.link and pic about water dogs/mud puppies

And I managed to get a wild canadian gosling from my cousin who worked at the city park. Unfortunately her mother was killed. She grew up with my chickens and then flew away one day. She was great, she would follow me everywhere, I miss her, her name was longbottoms! lol

Wind Scorpians? I have tons of those here but we do not call them that. We rescued a oppusom once, and various baby birds, a desert tortoise, wild rabbits, a tarantula. :B
chaoszerg
I had many different species of Tarantula's and I had some Scorpions and many different snakes and lizards. Then when my first daughter came along I gave them all away.
Jack_of_Blades
I had a albino hedghog, a kiddie pool with 20 painted turtles,
my mom used to have a spider monkey, and i had a toad that
acted like a cat (liked to be held and petted), but all of these
have died or where relesed........also had a baby opposom that we
fed hotdogs, a sugar glider named Baby, a cannibal brown
headed cat fish, and Pideons.

If this is an old thread I may have answered it before, but:

American Alligator
Crocodile Monitor
Black Throat Monitor
3 Tegus (large South American Lizard)

Huskie, with one brown eye and one blue eye, looks unusual but I believe it is pretty common in these dogs
Ashley-Star*Child
I used to keep hermit crabs and I had a pet lizard.

Now I have 'normal pets' lol a Teacup Maltese and an Exotic Persian.

Hey now, that's cool! You know, ask yourself 'What breed of dog is that large?' Is there any breed that large? What about the Siberian Huskie. The Labrador Retriever came from the same general area. That is so cool : 33 inches tall ph34r.gif That tells you how pure bred he is! How is his temper? I used to own a Spitz/Lab mix. And their instinct is wonderful. He wasn't extremely large but because of inborn environmental factors make them small.

Juupy froot
My cat's tail is only 9 inches long. does that count?

I always wanted to have a pet crab are they difficult to look after?
Ashley-Star*Child
Well I pampered them gave them little foam doghouse to play in toys toys and stuff (not all the time just when they were out of the tank, and yes they CAN come out) they used to cling to my clothes which was cute. You need to be a bit 'experienced' to keep them though. They needto be kept at at least 25 degress celcius and over, everything in the tank including sand must be sterile and washed (NEVER with soaps or detergents I just used rock salt) they need damp sponge in there for humidity, and I hand fed them to make sure they ate. They also need a salt bath once a week and misting with dechlorinated water (NEVER give them tap water it mustbe treated before they touch it). The problems start when they moult. They have to be isolated and they bury themselves in the sand have to be kept AWAY (in a separate tank) from the other crabs because they may eat the moulter and must be in complete darkness. Because it's such a stressful experience they rarely make it through the moult sad.gif That's why I stopped keeping them it was too heartbreaking.
chaoszerg
Thank you Ashley I think I will skip the idea of keeping one now they are almost as bad as looking after Tarantulas.
Samael
If a goldfish which is, in fact, not gold but orange and silver is unusual, then yeah. I have an unusual pet.
Hooligan
I have a French Bulldog named Hooligan, She knows four tricks, Sit, Lay down, Stand and Jump.
She also loves beer. she knows the difference between pouring a beer and a coke. The second you pop open a beer she's sitting by youre feet staring you in the eyeballs.
I don't feed her beer, but my Fiance will make her do tricks for a sip....

I totally agree Ashley, Hermit crabs are really cool, but mine almost always exprired at the moult. The one or two that did survive never were the same again and didn't live too long afterward.

I still think my favorite pets are parrots. Yes, they're noisy, they're MESSY but they're so darn charming it's hard not to love them I had an umbrella cockatoo that would nap with me by laying on my chest and hugging me with his wings. He wasn't really sleeping, but he'd stay like that for up to 40 or 50 minutes, sometimes crooning and cooing into my ear like a pigeon sound. When he reached maturity at about 10 years old, I gave him up to another breeder because he started to get sexually aggressive and I had to consider his mental welfare over my own love for him... not all large parrots go through this kind of sexual aggression, but some do and the only thing that helps them is breeding them. This is one of the reasons you see so many apparently abused parrots.... people aquire them as pets then don't realize that they have these issues and the bird turns on them and is overly aggressive, leading the owner to neglect them. It's sad.

i have a golden lab and shes 4 years old and she loves swimming in the pool. but It's all wet out side and theres a small spot in my back yard that is muddy and she likes to wander through it all the time so her paws get all muddy I mean really muddy so i cant just wipe them off with a wet towel. so i get a pale of water to put her paws in to wash them and she starts backing off and tries to push the pale away. the same kinda thing a cat does when u try to put them in the tub. so i got a smaller little container and dunked her feet in it and she starts shaking and gets all sad. I'm puzzled it makes no sense to me. its pretty unusual.

O' my goodness, bless your heart. The one before him, I had seven years before he died. They live a long time if taken care of and 9 years is great for a rabbit- she must have been loved. wink2.gif

I have two cats.

Crystal is a long-haired calico that adopted us when she was a kitten (found her by the front door). She thinks she is human. I can't self-clean my oven, because the smell scares her. She starts meowing like crazy (she hardly ever makes a noise). I believe she thinks the house is on fire and she is trying to warn us.

Our second cat, Lily, is a bit backward. She is a tabby cat that loves men. (It took her five years to warm up to me.) She loves playing with my husband. He will tease her unmercifully. Now, he can "pant" at her, and she will repeat it back to him. Very weird to see a cat react like this on cue. She also will talk to my oldest son. They will meow at each other for hours. Very weird (on my son's part). Then she will take Q-Tips from the trash and parade them around the house, meowing loudly, like she just found a prize. We have Q-tips all over the house. She also cries pitifully when my two boys leave for school. Weird cat.

Just curious, what do you call them? I was living in Montana at the time and I was baffled when I caught them in my woodpile. I looked them up and it seems like they had several names. The ones I caught didn't look exactly like the one in the pic, they had narrower bodies and were quite orange and no one I showed them to had ever seen them before. I started to wonder if they hitch-hiked up from Arizona with my neighbors in their 5th wheel trailer.

Oops, responded to the wrong thread.

But back to the wind scorpions, they are also called sun spiders, whip scorpions, and vinegaroons. The biggest ones I have seen were in Iraq, and called Camel Spiders by the GI's. The are big but not huge like the staged photos you sometimes see. I think some of these pics are in the UM archives.

We used to have two water dogs. My brother-in-law gave me a heater for the tank, but he failed to tell me that it was broken, so I boiled them.

One died, and the other one lost his "fins" and became a lizard, then he disappeared. Either he crawled out of the tank or the other water dog we bought to replace the boiled one ate him. Either way, we just don't know where he went--we never found a carcass or smelled anything bad.
