The August, 2003 issue of Electric Space Craft, a scientific journal, contains an amazing series of images taken from NASA footage included in the TV program, NOVA: To the Moon. The significance of the images has only recently been noticed. As Apollo 8 orbited 70 miles above the lunar surface, with Earth in the background, it filmed the ground below. At one point, a small, black object, tall and cylindrical, appears jutting from the moon. Just as the camera is about to pass by, the strange object clearly releases a jet-like cloud. It looks like a smokestack ejecting a puff of smoke. The cloud drifts to the right and then dissipates. Though the black object appears small on the screen, it must be thousands of feet tall if the footage was taken from such a high altitude. Electric Space Craft increased the sharpness and contrast of the black and white pics to clarify the scene for printing. The journal's Executive Editor (and former NASA employee), Charles A. Yost, says the anomaly is clearer on the VHS version due to digital compression for the DVD.
The object appears on screen for two seconds, and was not mentioned in the NOVA program. It was apparently unnoticed until spotted by Electric Space Craft staff. The anomaly cannot be lint or debris on the film since it appears in many frames, changes as the camera's perspective is altered, and produces the jet-like cloud that drifts and vanishes.

I'm having trouble getting to this story. When I click on the link the page loads, but minus the story. I'll try again later. That is a really great site!

Incredible!
I've always thought that the nations of Earth have had a secret space program hidden from the public eye. A program where only the "best" human specimens are allowed to go to the moon and populate it with generations of space born/adapted humans, for future deep space missions, or warfare.
Could these stacks be for venting purposes, by some internally built machine that would sustain an ecosystem to support our fragile lifeforms? For all we truely know there could be a couple million humans living up there awaiting their call into action.
This is a great story, Athalus.

Very mysterious images! That mission was over 30 years ago, and
someone just now noticed it? hmmm...

Ink? Hair? ....
Who knows.
I'm with Bizarro though - originals would be good to see.

Could possibly speak volumes about all of this.

I also agree with Bizarro. I would like to see the original footage. Still, it is very interesting...

I think that it maybe a vent. Who knows what country may have landed up there and created some kind of lunar base. Saying that who knows what Planet.
(Maybe the moon is actually a giant space craft!!!!

)
Would be cool also to see original footage

I remember reading somewhere (an article on this site, possibly), that seismic measuring equipment gave off a weird reading, suggesting the moon to be hollow.
Maybe it is?
Perhaps there's a

factory down there, churning out god knows what.
But what?
Cheap trainers, probably. (`sneakers', for our colonial chums)

Before you know it the moon will no longer have a 'face' in it. It'll just a big Nike tick!!

Interesting...
Still a black tower on the moon is a bit strange...

I'm not sure I buy this, for the simple reason that if there was a civilization of anything on the moon, I think we definately would have heard from them by now. Even if it's just dropping off our crap from the moon landings and giving us all the finger. Another thing, there is no atmosphere on the moon, correct? So why does the smoke drift to the right? I don't know how smoke behaves in a near vacuum, but I don't think it does that.

Good point about the smoke.
But there does appear to be something on the film, with a cloud-like form moving from it.
Could the cloud/smoke shape be a shadow?

Okay, could be a shadow, but I doubt it.

Here's an explanation for the supposed 'anamoly' in this instance.
".......within a couple of hours we discovered that this "footage" is not footage at all. It was a still image taken using the handheld Haselblad cameras on board the Apollo 8 spacecraft. The people filming the NOVA TV show used their own cameras to zoom in on this still photograph, creating an illusion of motion. The "black smoke" is simply something in their own film, not on the original image, which, again, is not a motion picture."It comes from the forum run on Phill Plaitt's Bad Astronomy website -

Was it intentional or not does any body know? if it was intentional then that is really very sneaky!
