seriously, why do we make these movies about aliens invading earth and how we solve the problem of their technology or find out how to beat them? isn't that like giving away our friggen trumph card? we broadcast these movies thru our satellites...any curious aliens would get the signals and see what we have in mind.. if they do ever consider to attack us.. guess what, we have nothing new to surprise them with.... so stop making those movies!! we are giving our secrets away!!!!!

I think that if they saw our plans, they would be too busy laughing to travel here!

I guess the aliens would target people such as Will Smith and kill them....
mmmmm, maybe not a bad thing.
Anyways.... If alients travelled the breadth of space to detroy us, I doubt they would have little ships landing in a city and attacking.
More likely they would sit in space and blast from there....
I mean..... how many battles on Earth are actually face to face now?

True.
Besides, with the technology they would be able to bring to bear, why bother taking this planet? There are likely billions in this galaxy alone.
The scary ones to meet would be the ones just somewhat ahead of us. Imagine the mess WE would make of the neighborhood if we were to deveop the ability to travel interstellar distances in say just the next 50 years? I shudder!

Films like this suggest that the Galaxy is largely populated by highly aggressive species, ones whose interest in Earth might extend no farther than using it now and again as a hunting lodge. The tracts of space, in this view, are akin to the unknown seas on medieval maps --"here be monsters" -- vast, forbidding habitats that lap the shores of the civilized world, and are stuffed with dangerous creatures. Thats unlikely to be typical, but of course we still cant say what real aliens are like.

Me thinks it is highly likely that all manner and stages of beings are out there. Just look at the diversity of life, and culture on this "pale blue dot."

The flaw in your argument is this.If we do get invaded by Aliens....I dont think the first people we'll call will be Hollywood Producers,Directors or Screenwriters !!!!!!
As a matter of fact i'd say youd be hard pushed to find Spielberg and co if the sh** hit the fan........

That makes me think bogey...
I remember that right after 911, our gov did just that!
They asked writers, moviemakers and the like to come up with possible scenarios that we might face next.
Ya never know man, ya never know!

I raised this in a different forum, but assuming that an End of World scenario happens.
If as predictions go 70% if population is wiped out.
and if most the planet is uninhabitable -
I would imagine that the most likely candidates for survival would be tribesman of Africa and S. America as they have always lived from the available resources rather than the local Supermarket.
How long would it take for these tribes to venture, and should such a scenario as a nuclear winter occur would it be safe to assume both that 99% of our constructions will be gone and that the duration to reinhabit is certainly in excess of 10,000 years.
They would not be aware of inventions (although this is changing now) such as cars, TVs etc....
The World repopulates and archeologists of the future find ancint remains.
They appear to be silver metal discs with the words CD engraved on them.
Through a miracle a player and TV is found.
Would the new civilisation see footage of films like Independance Day, and believe it is written fact, that it occurred and that is why our world was destroyes so badly?
We then have a civilisation that believes the evidence and fears what could happen once again.
Always interested me this idea.
Hollywood always makes aliens seem bad. so thats why we fear them.
besides et... haha. he doesnt count.

I wonder what the aliens would think about us. Really. Don't just think about people like us that do normalish things. Think about the condition of the whole world. I would be embarassed if they visited us right now.

All of this sounds as if Nature whether on our planet or some alien world will stumble into increased IQ sooner or later. But keep in mind that many of the dinosaurs were in predator-prey relations (and may have been somewhat social, too)and all animals, but one,are to day. Why didnt they get smart? After all, they had 140 million years to do so.
When it comes to the evolution of intelligence, the bottom line is that we dont know. And indeed, we may never know how likely it is that intelligence will appear unless and until we find it elsewhere.Until then, stacking up on food and water for the comming alien invasion wont be on my to-do list this year.

Sadly pushed for time, but the arguement is that at some point in our evolution we were scavengers.
We basically had the leftovers of other animals, so we began to eat bone marrow (all that was really left).
High in proteins etc.... this allowed a certain part of our brains to develope.
thalamus?
By accident I would suggest this evolution allowed the brain to mature.
I admit canines etc.... eat marrow, but did not have the accident to create the inteligence we talk of.
Assuming we are intelligent!

Even mites can run a civilisation that recycles virtually 100% and has hierachy.

Heh, I hear ya Hazzard. Me either!
While I could make arguements for "intelligence" elsewhere and elsewhen on Earth, that could be nit-picking. Besides, I think what you are refering to is a "technological intelligence." The ability to manipulate our circumstances. 140 million years is quite a damn long time to take to learn ones ABCs.
I am an atheist, but "Something Wonderful" must have happened to us about 2 or 3 million years ago. Maybe, for some reason, our forebearers saw that technological intelligence would never emerge here of it own accord and decided that this would be an ethical place to seed it.

I dunno why we make out aliens to be mean (since we have never met them- well I haven't and probably about 99.9% of the world also), but from all of this abduction, and animal cruelty talk, wouldn't you say they were not the nicest beings?? I just hope that they are not all mean, because then there would be no hope. I mean say our planet is about to be destroyed, and we have no way of stopping it from being destroyed... who would save us?? Not them cause they are just as evil.. So ya, doesn't it suck to know that there is a bigger chance that this "other life" could be as evil than we could even imagine? Just a post for thought..

You know, we might save our race doing that. If they think were paranoid, they might be scared, if a giant UFO lands... we just might start bombing the crap out of everything around us, in turn scareing the aliens off.

The movies are not about how the world defeats aliens. They is about how AMERICA defeats the aliens. Just goes to show that all SCIFI producers/screenwriters are american.
I don't think your likely to see a movie about the Russians/Cubans/Muslims defeating aliens. That would be unamerican.

You know, i'm glad you posted this topic. I always wondered what the aliens might be thinking if they intercepted a transmission of Benny Hill or War of the Worlds?
They'd probably think were nuts! I wonder what aliens do for fun? I think i'll post a topic on that?

As for the question at hand, Why do we make movies about aliens? Because we like to be scared and entertained at the same time. And if we can beat them in the movie it makes us feel good that we might have a chance in the event of an alien invasion.
Second Question. How do we defeat them? not sure if we could, humans seem pretty preoccupied with blowing eachother up rather then putting together a defense against "invading" aliens. Last time I checked it doesn't take much to blow up a human. (not that I do it.)
