Dog, 22, on 10 cigs a day

The Austrian owner of a 22-year-old Dachshund says the secret of his dog's long life is cigarettes. blink.gif

Wolfgang Treitler, from Graz, says his dog General Edi has been munching his way through 10 cigarettes a day for years.

Treitler said: "His old owner abandoned him and so we took him in 17 years ago, and noticed straight away that he was in the habit of eating cigarettes.

"He eats the tobacco and the paper, and then chews a while on the filter before spitting it out.

"On average he eats about 10 cigarettes a day, but all of his teeth are fine and he is as fit as a puppy, even though he turned 22 this week."

Local vet Harald Mayr said: "Nicotine normally leads to poisoning in dogs, but in this case the animal has obviously become addicted to it which has increased its level of tolerance."

I was angry when I read the first part of this story. I thought it was not a nice (or responsible) thing to do to a pet! What was he thinking?

Then when I read about the dog's longevity and purported good health; I became curious and therefore ambivalent.

I am (of course) skeptical about the dog's age. Twenty two years is quite a claim. Yes, I would like to see a birth certificate. Oh yeah, and a biopsy of his mouth. wink2.gif
Bebi
According to tobacco warnings it contains formaldehyde... Case closed w00t.gif

wonder how the dog got started...
Bebi
I remember we had to pop out and I'd left my freshly rolled ciggie in the ashtray thinking I'd smoke it when I got back. Got back and could I find that darn cig anywhere? Eventually found it chewed up under the coffee table rolleyes.gif I have a theory that the kittens originally just wanted it to play with then decided they like the taste...

I've heard of people living for extremely long periods of time while smoking, so why not the dog?

I somehow doubt that the eating of cigarettes has had anything to do with the dogs longevity but you just never know.
Bebi
I was under the impression that smoking ciggies is what kills you quicker. I wonder if anyone's done any scientific studies on eating them?

Chewing tobacco causes mouth cancer.
Bebi
LOL that'll teach me not to do some basic research before typing something grin2.gif

In England they used beagles for tobacco experiments

1975: An undercover investigation, by a reporter from a Sunday
newspaper, revealed that in a UK
lab beagle dogs were being forced
to smoke tobacco substitutes.

In three months, the newspaper had generated 300,000 signatures on its petition to stop
these experiments.
The UK`s Home Secretary ordered an inquiry and in Dec 1975 the Government accepted
the Advisory Committee`s recommendations that no further smoking experiments on
dogs should be allowed.
