I see mine all the time, it gets annoying after a while...

seriously though, (anyone who knows me saw that coming)
I do have a serious interest in doppelgangers, incredible phenomenon and baffling as heck, could be any number of reasons from infedelity on a grandparents part, to an honest genetic fluke, or even spirits of some kind have even been proposed, as stated in the topic starter...really cool thread!

Well, I havn't seen mine. But my exgirlfriend broke up with me because of it! He put pictures of himself on a dating website trying to get dates. I SWEAR it wasn't me, I don't even have a webcam or a digital cam!!
EDIT: OH SNAP. I found it:

LMAO
You know, the first portion I read I thought you were being serious. Ahem...
I'm not sure which culture the bad luck thing comes from. But I know that the term "doppelganger" is German. I've even seen someone write in one thread that it meant that a loved one would die.

That's what I wanted. That's why I spaced it so far down

On da Serious Edit Fa shizzle: I've heard of doppelgangers for the first time on coast to coast. It's apparently your "double". I have no idea if it's a spirit, demon or what. Maybe it's a little brat demon who likes to copy cat? I hear they're usualy not dangerous but pretty miscivious

They're interesting, but I think many accounts can be chalked up to an overactive imagination getting carried away after coming across someone who happens to look like the so-called victim.

T'is. It translates to "double-goer", or something along those lines.

I kinda hoped it was some last ditch effort at coercing your girlfriend into believing some excuse about your evil twin having done it.

A Doppelganger is the exact double that is supposed to stalk us all, but stays just out of sight. There is a famous case from the 19th century, of Emilie Sagee, a French school teacher. She would be in class teaching and the students would look out the window and see her 'doulble' walking in the gardens. She culd litterally be in two places at once. This one time, she was writing on the blackboard, when her double appeared beside her and went through the very same actions that Emilie was doing. The students said there was only one difference and that was that the real Emilie had chalk in her hand and the Dopplegnger had none. 13 students wittnessed this! Most of the time it would appear behind her, synchronising her movements. It seems that when the double would appear strong and clear, Emilie wouild be drained of her strength, and would return to normal when it dissappeared. The BBC made of dramatization of this story in the 1970's for their show Leap in the Dark.

I have only known two people who have seen what could be described as their doppleganger. From the events that went with this I would have to say that I do not think that seeing your doppleganger is a good thing.
Whether considered spirit or psychological it seems fairly clear that it is a confrontation point in a person's life where they will either increase their courage and ethical practices or they will regress to less than they had before the confrontation.

I saw my "doppleganger" when I was about six. I remember it to this day. I was walking into a deptartment store, (Stars )still a ways out in the parking lot, perhaps 20 meters or so away from the entrance. I was holding my mother's hand. There was a kid walking toward the door, holding his mom's (I assume) hand. He turned his head and looked right at me. He looked exactly like me. There was a strange sense of a "connection." I can't describe it any better than that. It is at this point that memory fails me.

Doppelgangers are shapeshifters. I used to think it was all aliens, but I think human beings can do that from the 'other side'. They have only done it a number of times to me, but only in my dreams. It can be done as a form of black magick. It can be dangerous because you may end up thinking someone is there on the astral plane- when.....it isn't the astral plane it's someone- {alien?} something making you think that. I still think aliens can do it too though.
Always remember that in the astral world, you have to physically be 'somewhere' first in order to go there astrally. It's impossible for anyone- if you haven't been there before. *Ive seen famous people dead and alive I thought were there - and I learned the hard way through instincts/gut feelings that it's totally impossible*- eventually I put up with it for so many years- everyone that did it to me before couldn't do it again. Eventually when word get's out - far enough 'out there' on the 'other' side- people have to stop with the stupid mind games.
Innocence catches up, honesty is the best policy.

When you come across your doppleganger you're supposed to die. Percey (shelley ?) the poet from england saw his own dubbelganger pointing towards the place he was to die, and a while later he did indeed die at that same spot.
Still, popular belief holds it that one has to stand near a church door at the night of 24th of april and that you'll see all the ghastly apparitions of those who are about to die that year. Must be quite eerie to see yourself walking there (but at least that would remind me of how cute i am, cough cough).
