Feb. 22, 2006 — Residents near Lake Champlain in New York say they have their own Loch Ness monster. They call it Champ, and it's a local legend.
It is the inspiration for parade floats, T-shirts, key chains, minor-league baseball team mascots, and wild stories.
ABC News obtained exclusive video of something just under the surface of the lake that some say may be Champ. The video was taken by two fishermen with their digital camera last summer. Before their supposed sighting, they were Champ skeptics.
"It was as big around as my thigh," said fisherman Peter Bodette. "I'm 100 percent sure of what we saw. I'm not 100 percent sure of what it was."
"It made my hair stand on end at the time," said fisherman Dick Affolter. "It just didn't fit anything — any creature I had seen."
Affolter said they never saw the entire body.
"What we saw always stayed at the surface and parts of it would come above the water, like the back of the nose or the head," he said.
In the past, grainy pictures and home video taken from too far away did not provide a clear picture. This footage — showing an odd wake — is from a closer vantage point, but still not clear.
Lake Champlain Lore
So far, there have been hundreds of sightings — sometimes more than a dozen a year — of Champ.
"There are people who say they've seen something unusual in the lake," said Lohr McKinstry, a reporter for the Press Republican, who has been writing about Champ sightings for more than 20 years. "Some sort of unusual life that shouldn't be there in Lake Champlain. Best guess would be that it is some sort of creature that possibly should be extinct."
The Champ frenzy began in the 1880s when P.T. Barnum offered $50,000 for the capture of Champ dead or alive. Hunters and fishermen came out of the woods, but no one was able to collect.
As for the latest sighting, two retired FBI analysts reviewed the tape and said that it appeared authentic.
"I can't find anything in there that would suggest or indicate to me that this has been fabricated or manipulated in any way," said Gerald Richards, a forensic image analyst. "However, there's no place in there that I can see actually see, an animal or any other object on the surface."

I found that video very interesting. No conclusions can be drawn from it, but it is very interesting.

I wish someone would just get some good footage and put this mystery to an end. I'll have to check out the footage but I'm kinda skeptic on these supposed lake monsters. Seems like every lakes got one now-a-days.

Feb 22 2006, 09:25 PM
I'm in the middle on it...but I'm kinda pushing towards the idea that if there was a monster in any of them lakes it most likely is dead by now. I mean one monster can't survive millions of years alone so they'd have to be more and more than one monster would start to become more noticed than a few grainy shots.
Then on the other hand I've heard rumours that there maybe ghosts of dinosaurs, and one quite outlandish one is that in these lakes there is some sort of time skip where for a couple of seconds the lake appears prehistoric.

Tantalizing video. I would have poked it with a stick to try and get some DNA. I like to poke things with sticks. If I had however, it may well have not taken well to that and eaten me. I will continue to look for things to poke with a stick...

Mmmmm, like a better look - Flash sucks
At least the pics are getting marginally better. Is that supposed to be a fin or a tail under the boat? Kinda looks like a fish.
I see they are sporting the Mansi photo on the site. I assume this is still the best "evidence" as yet?

Feb 22 2006, 09:42 PM
I dont really think it was fish. Firstly because the wake was so large, secondly because it looks as if the head decends into a long tail or neck that disappears as the water gets deeper, and lasty because the integrity of the fishermen seems genuine. They didnt try to sell the tape as I've seen most hoaxers do. The fishermen seem to know a lot about the area as well and they're convinced its not a type of fish.

Even speaking as skeptic, it looks for all the world like a head, long neck and pectoral flippers (ie hands) to me.
I still would have poked it with a stick...

Thought the wake could so large from a school of fish, but that aside, I can't make out a head or anything (Flash Sucks

)
Love to see a clearer copy.
These guys sorta claim it is a serpent type animal (sure thats how it went, I hate flash did I mention that?). The Mansi Photo shows more of a plesiosaur shape.
Anyone konw the most comon type of sighting? Is it possible there is more than one type of unknown creature in this lake.

Well,at the first watching I must admit that I positively yelled OMFG! Unless it's created by some computer technology, which according to the news program is highly unlikely,we might have the real thing here.
Here are caps from the video for those who cannot watch:

Yes, I just can't make it out that well. Does anyone kow of a .wmv, .mov, .mpeg - anything other than streaming flash version? Anyone got a coverter kind enough to post a non-flash version?
I have trouble viewing Flash files.
On my PC, I sorta see a fin, but as I said, it could be a fish from here. Just bad quality for me.

That's no good. I see it fine in flash, can't find another source. Try monkeying with your display settings. Perhaps you don't have enough bit depth for color. Set your display to true color and at least 1024X768 pixels.

If you can't find any proof in that video, there is something wrong.
The head is clearly visible, and it looks just as I have heard it described several times. It appears to be curious, and then swims away.

Hard to make out - in the film, I thought it looked like a fin or a long fish? in the pics it looks like a head.

I agree.
It looked like it could have even been a log or something... maybe an eel?
What I saw in the video didn't scream "Lake monster" ... you couldn't distinguish any real features, eyes, mouth, or anything to make you think it's even alive.
I would think a "lake monster" would be larger. I'm gonna say it's an eel.

Feb 23 2006, 07:39 PM
I agree an eel or a pretty big catfish....
MadEyePixie

Feb 23 2006, 10:02 PM
In looking at that video, the resemblance to an eel is uncanny. The only thing was that the pects looked overly large compared to the rest of it. I am reminded of a day fishing in the CT river when I caught what should have been a 50 lb catfish. It was a meter long, but seemed to be diseased or otherwise starved. It really looked like a meter long sperm cell. It was so odd that I just cut the line and let it go. I didn't want to touch it. This fish should have weighed in at more than 20kg, but if it weighed 2 I would be surprised.
MadEyePixie
Feb 23 2006, 10:27 PM
That is an extremely large eel. I seem to remember reading something though that eels from Lake Champlain dont get very large at all. I wish I could remember where I read it so I could be sure.

i know a conger when i see one!!

could well have been a big eel, even fresh water eels can grow pretty big in europe so who knows how big they could get in a warmer climate. the creature in the vid looked more like a wels catfish though, these can grow to six hundred pounds in some places

.

Feb 23 2006, 11:25 PM
Could be an eel, I guess, although it doesn't look nearly as thick as that monster.
I thought the footage was uncanny in that what we could see of whatever-it-was REALLY seemed to match what I saw on this program that was on this one time... I'm sure somebody knows the one I'm talking about, seeing as that I don't off-hand and am much too lazy to go looking for it. Lucky for you I found one of the computer graphics from the show, and I just remember thinking this one dude's theory was pretty interesting. He doesn't think the creatures are plesiosaurs, but something else that I also cannot name off-hand... a sauropod with an abnormally long neck that sort of hopscotches along the bottom. I thought it was hilarious, actually, but I was completely floored when I saw the footage because of the striking similarities.
Was it "America's Loch Ness Monster"? I don't know, too many people calling it that nowadays.
