Wichita police said a 25-year-old man was driving south on West Street shortly before 4 p.m. Monday when a gun went off in the car. The victim told police the gun was in his pocket. But there was no hole in the man's pants pocket, Sgt. Steve Hiser said.
The bullet passed through the victim's left thigh, Hiser said. Police don't know what kind of gun it was, he said, because a front-seat passenger took the gun and fled the scene.
Hiser said the evidence suggests the man was driving with the gun tucked between his legs.
A passenger in the back seat was booked into jail on drug charges. The driver was taken to Via Christi Regional Medical Center's St. Francis campus for treatment of his wound.
He is in fair condition this morning at the hospital. He won't be arrested once he's released, Hiser said.
"It's not illegal to accidentally shoot yourself in the leg," Hiser said.
