“It's not a prank,” said Capt. Paul O'Brien of the Metro Arson Strike Team. “It's a felony.”
The two 15-year-old boys, both students at Torrey Pines High School, were taken to Juvenile Hall after the parents of one of them called police, saying their son wanted to turn himself in, said O'Brien, a fire department captain.
O'Brien said the two teens ignited their improvised explosive in the toilet in the men's restroom of the McDonald's on Del Mar Heights Road near Carmel Country Road around 3:45 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Their device is known as an “AXE bomb” because its main component is a can of AXE body spray.
What they didn't know was that after they left – but before their device went off – a 7-year-old boy had entered the bathroom. The child was inside when it detonated, O'Brien said.
The wall between the bathroom stall and the sink was all that saved the child from possibly being riddled with pieces of porcelain shrapnel, the investigator said.
The other thing the two high schoolers didn't know was that the McDonald's had very good surveillance video of both of them, he said.
Asked why they did it, “they said they were bored and wanted something to do,” the captain said.
