Ok...It ALMOST cranks then it starts popping really loud, the battery is fine, and i've had the starter cylinoid go out in various vehicles and it does not sound like that...so I'm thinking the popping noise is one of the belts that broke slapping the engine (or slapping something) when it tries to spin....any ideas? I did a little research on this noise and it seems to be pointing to the timing belt. The car was cranked up in my driveway when I suddenly shut off...when I tried to recrank...engine almost turns over and then...loud popping noise.....any help will be appreciated...also any idea how much it will cost to fix?

i think the cranking is you ruining your starter. check you distrubutor cap. maybe a good tune up migh thelp. umm if it's the timing belt you should be able to see if it is broken. oh, BTW if you can tell us the type of vehicle you have and the mileage. that helps us lots.
of course, if it doesn't work call a local mechanic.<<<<<<taht always helps

Probably not the belt.
Could be anything from bad plugs, to clogged fuel injector, bad plug wires, voltage regulator, ect.
Check your plugs, plug wires, solvent to clean fuel injector, and hope you can slide by that way I suppose, otherwise you know the drill.

Mechanic buddy of mine just stopped by, said its the starter...but would a bad starter cause it to die when its already cranked?

Definately sounds like the Timing Belt, but could be you Spun a Bearing. Could also be a thrown Rod, beating the inside of the Cylinder.
I did that once, in a Oldsmobile. I was flying up this Mountain, about 85, and got to the top and it threw 2 rods. I walked home, needless to say.
